Profile

“*sigh* You can find people who believe anything! There are people who believe the Moon landings were faked! Faked! Do you think I don’t notice when something lands on my face?”

When the Moon enters a room, everyone notices her, yet Luna rarely wants to be noticed herself. Secretive and quiet, she hides away from anyone who isn’t Earth, preferring to spend her time alone in her room, dreaming. Though she may appear emotionless, especially when contrasted with Earth, Luna is just better at hiding how she feels. She displays her sadness more readily than her happiness, making her appear gloomier than she really is. When she doesn’t want to interact with someone, she can be coarse and irritating, and often drives away potential friends. Yet she rarely gets angry, mostly because she doesn’t know how to express her anger. She’s reflective, going over every moment of a day at its end, pondering her strengths and weaknesses. She can get caught up in her flaws, and beat herself up because of them, so she turns to calming environments to take her mind off introspection. Her mood is cyclical, going from more down and depressed phases that tend to last from last to first quarter (surrounding the new Moon), and happier phases from first quarter to last quarter (surrounding the full Moon). She prefers the nighttime to the daytime, though she will sometimes go outside during the day, and prefers winter to summer. She loves stargazing, with her favorite target being herself of course. She’s interested in space exploration, and launches model rockets. She is especially passionate about the Space Race and the Apollo program. When not doing something science-related, she reads and writes poetry, and enjoys romance novels. By far her closest relationship is with Earth. No matter how down Luna is feeling, she can never turn her back on them. Luna is Earth’s emotional anchor, and helps them slow down and relax. Despite their close relationship, Luna grows more independent each year. She tries to be friendly with the Sun, mostly at Earth’s request, but worries the Sun will draw too much attention to her. She has somewhat of a rivalry with her cousin Io, who tries to convince her that Jupiter’s parenting style is superior to Earth’s. She still grieves the loss of Theia, the mother she never knew.

The Moon is right-handed like Earth, and can use her left hand about as well as Earth can. Her main power is to enhance Earth's water and tectonic powers, but she does have some powers of her own. She has weak heating and cooling powers, but has even less control over them than Mercury. She can freeze water into ice and harden that ice to make it rocklike, but she is not very skilled with that power compared to Europa.

Physical Appearance

163 cm (5’4”) tall. Rectangular figure with minimal curves, with a moderate amount of body fat. Round, slightly oval face. Dark brown skin tone with pale patches. Dark gray eyes with a slight shine and very short eyelashes. Wide, rounded nose. Several prominent scars on her face and body, the most visible being a cross-shaped scar adjacent to her right eye, a scar on her  chin, and a scar on her neck. Her clothes usually cover up the rest of her scars, but she has the most on her right leg and foot. Her scars appear light on her pigmented skin and a dark red on her patches. Curly white hair that reaches down to her neck. Usually wears a light gray long-sleeve shirt with gray specs, dark gray pants with pockets that contain ice (yes, actual water ice), black boots with orange soles, brownish gray gloves, and a silver-and-black necklace. She has a different necklace for each phase of the real Moon.

Design Notes

The Moon’s shapes are a combination of circles, representing her friendly, emotional nature, and squares, representing her practicality. Her skin’s vitiligo patches counterintuitively represent the lunar maria, the dark parts of the Moon’s surface, and their placement roughly matches the location of the maria on the Moon. She has almost no patches on her back, just as there are almost no large maria on the Moon’s far side. The pigmented sections of her skin represent the light lunar highlands. Her many scars represent craters on the real Moon, and approximate the locations of real large craters. Her white hair reflects (ha ha) the yellow or white color that the Moon appears from Earth. Her curly hair takes the form of waves and spirals that resemble the lightly-colored lunar swirls. Her hair has a rough globe shape, as the Moon is round like most large celestial bodies (the Moon is not perfectly round, and her slightly oval face reflects that). Her dark gray eyes reflect (ha ha) the Moon’s very low albedo (it does not reflect most of the light that hits it), yet they are slightly reflective, which in addition to albedo references silver, associated with the Moon in alchemy. Her light shirt represents the light lunar highlands, with gray specs to represent craters. Her dark pants represent the dark lunar maria. Her pockets reference permanently shadowed craters at the lunar south pole, which can contain water ice (hence why she has ice in her pockets). Her black boots again reference the Moon’s low albedo, and their orange soles reference the orange soil discovered by Apollo 17. Her brownish gloves also reference this. The design of her shirt, pants, boots, and gloves are inspired by the spacesuits of the Apollo program. Her necklaces represent the different phases of the Moon, and the light part of the necklace is made of silver, which is associated with the Moon. Earth has a matching set of Earth phase necklaces, though they rarely wear them. Physically, she resembles Earth more than Theia, as the Moon's isotopic composition is very similar to that of Earth.

-Do not forget her patches or her scars.

-Do not whitewash her! Her hair is wavy.

-You can draw her necklace like any phase of the Moon. It doesn't have to be waxing crescent like in her reference.

-Her shirt has gray specs.

*She's genderflux, so her gender intensity varies. Specifically, she's 100% female during the full Moon and agender during the new Moon, and how feminine her gender is corresponds to how lit up the real Moon is. That being said, for simplicity's sake she describes her gender as demigirl because that's accurate most of the time.
