Yuui Watanabe (渡辺 悠衣 - Watanabe Yuui) is a first-year student and the Prefect of Night Raven College. Orignally from Japan, she was summoned to the world of Twisted Wonderland for unknown reasons. While she waits for Dire Crowley to find a way to send her back to her world, she attempts to survive and adapt as a magicless person in the mysterious and chaotic magic school, with her newfound partner and roommate, Grim.

Appearance

Yuui is a young woman with fair complexion and a curvy body, she has one mole under her right eye and two moles on her left breast. Her short hair is a pink-ish brown tone with pink highlights and its a little bit longer on the right side. Her eyes are amethyst colored.

In Night Raven College, Yuui pretends to be a boy to fit in the school better and avoid standing out more than she does, because of that she usually wears boy clothes or gender neutral outfits. What she wears the most is the school uniform which she wears with a pullover underneath.

Since she's a busty girl, she hides her breasts using bandages and wearing either oversized shirts or as many pieces of clothing as she can (hence why she wears a pullover with her uniform, and why she wears double shirt with the gym uniform).

At Ramshackle Dorm, when she's alone with Grim, she can relax and so she wears either a comfy salmon colored hoodie with leggins, or a tanktop and comfy shorts (which she uses as sleepwear as well). In the company of those who know she's a girl she can also relax and wears clothes that are more comfortable and doesn't bother hiding her breasts (as she finds this very uncomfortable).

Other outfits she wears, apart from the different school uniforms, is the Octavinelle dorm uniform, which she uses while she works at her shifts on Mostro Lounge. On some occassions she has worn much more feminine outfits, and she even has a "girl disguise" that she uses when she has to show as a girl; she wears a wig and takes the name "Yuuli" so those who don't know her secret don't find out it's her.

Back at her world, Yuui used to wear her hair long until her first year of high school where she decided to cut her hair to change her image. When she came to Twisted Wonderland, she already had her hair short hence why Crowley didn't notice she was a girl at first glance.

Personality

Yuui is a levelheaded, independent, kind and hardworking young woman. She's a pretty blunt person that doesn't hesitate to express her honest opinion and doesn't back off when someone needs to be called out. Responsible and reliable, Yuui assumed the responsabilities asigned to her by the director Dire Crowley, including taking care of Grim, as long as she stays in Twisted Wonderland, and despite being a magicless being she's very diligent with her new school life.

At first sight she comes off as someone naive and innocent because of her genuine concern about others and how she selfless helps her classmates when they're in trouble, however this is far from truth as she's someone perceptive that isn't easily deceived, and a very cheeky girl. Yuui can also be pretty sarcastic and flirtatious, her flirty commentaries are usually done to tease or annoy others or is simply used as her defense mechanism to hide her flusteredness.

Yuui hates irresponsability and so she detests Crowley's unreliableness specially when it comes to matters that concern her and Grim, therefore she decided to search for a job to sustain herself and Grim financially, and she found it at Mostro Lounge where she does a variety of tasks,  including being Azul's "guinea pig" for his experimental potions.

Yuui also has a soft and motherly side, which most of the time she shows to Grim who she sees as a younger sibling. She also can be pretty soft to Ace and Deuce, who are her best friends in the school, she's not ashamed to openly express her affection for them and sometimes she even uses this to tease Ace who seems to be embarrassed at her honesty. She has showed her motherly side to others as well, such as her Mostro Lounge coworkers.

Despite looking like a confident person, Yuui actually has many insecurities . She dislikes to stand out or to be the center of attention (which ironically she ends up being most of time because she gets dragged into unusual situations that happen in the school), which is why she decided to pretend to be a boy, as she already standed out enough for being the only magicless person in the all-boys school, and she didn't want to stand out for being the only girl either. She also has stage fright, which is why she refuses to perform with neither the Light Music Club (where she partakes sometimes) nor in Mostro Lounge, despite being a pretty talented singer.

Occasionally, Yuui has moments of impulsiveness and reacts before thinking, which most of the time leads her to troublesome situations that most likely will make her regret her actions once her head cools down.

Yuui also has the terrible habit of swallowing up her feelings, enduring everything and pretending everything is ok, she doesn't like to burden others with her problems or insecurities, which is why is hard for her to open up or vent to others. Since she lost her mother at a very young age, she got used to deal with her feelings by herself as she always convinced herself that she needed to support her father, who contrary to her is a very sensitive man, and not give him more worries than he already had.

Years before she went to Twisted Wonderland, back in middle school, Yuui was more timid and someone who got along with everybody but wasn't close with no one, except for her best friend Kouta. She also used to be someone who cared a lot about her appearance and liked makeup because this was the only way she could bond with other girls in her class, unfortunately these girls were the shallow kind and didn't really consider her a friend like she did with them and they didn't hesitate to ostracize her as soon as they started to notice Yuui was standing out more than them. The usually timid Yuui that was afraid to express her true feelings, had enough and confronted those girls which ended up being the beggining of her nightmare in school as these girls started to spread rumors about her that painted her as promiscuous. This whole situation left several psychological scars on Yuui: she became wary of girls in general and it became harder for her to befriend other girls; she stopped caring about her physical appearance and in general started to hate standing out; her personality also changed, she became the blunt girl that she is today and promised herself to be true to herself and never remain quiet just to fit in.

Yuui has always loved to sing, but she only sees singing as a fun hobby and not as something she wants to do professionally, in fact she's much more interested on visual arts as future career of choice. Apart from this, Yuui always has had stage fright which is why she prefers to sing with friends for fun and not in front of a big audience. However her stage fright became worst after a breakup she had with an ex-boyfriend in her 3rd year of middle school, who only dated her to convince her to be the vocalist of his band, this whole event was traumatic for Yuui who was genuinely in love with the boy, and it also made her wary about falling in love again.

When it comes to love, Yuui already fell in love once and it ended with her being terribly heartbroken, that's why she's afraid of falling in love again. In Twisted Wonderland, when she starts to feel love again, she panicks and her heart is in turmoil, she's constantly trying to convince herself that she's not in love, however when it becomes cristal clear that she can't keep deceiving herself, she stops running away from her feelings and tries to face them. In a relationship, Yuui has a tendency to be the one that takes the lead, she's playful, flirty and likes to shower her partner with affection; she's ok with PDA as long as it comes from her, but gets embarrassed when her partner is the one that initiates it.

History

Yuui Watanabe, a regular sophomore high school girl suddenly gets her life changed as she gets involved in an accident while she was walking through a level crossing. She later awakes inside of a coffin in a completely different world alongside a strange talking cat, called Grim, who starts chasing her. Confused and with fuzzy memories, Yuui realizes she has been transported to a strange location that she soon learns is a magic school called Night Raven College.

For unknown reasons Yuui was suddenly summoned to the all-boys magic school Night Raven College and was mistaken as a regular first year student that was just about to start their school life. But to the shock of everyone present there, including the director Dire Crowley, she turned out to be a magicless being therefore she was unfit to enroll on the school. To make things even more complicated, Yuui realizes she is not only on a magic school (something completely impossible for her until that moment), but she was also on a whole different world from her own, as Crowley seemed completely clueless of her place of origin, Japan. When Crowley starts to question Yuui about her place of origin to give him clues, Yuui discovers that she has almost all of her memories of her world and life, but for some reason she's unable to remember that day when she was summoned to Twisted Wonderland, she had no recollection of what she was doing or what day it was before she awakened in the coffin, as if it was completely ereased from her memory.

After demanding Crowley to take responsability for what his dark mirror did, Yuui gets a place to stay temporary in an abandoned house that later will be known as Ramshackle Dorm. There she reunites with the cat monster Grim, who at first she found as an annoying and troublesome creature. She then quickly finds out the house is inhabited by 3 ghosts, but instead of being frightened by them she reacted with exciment and joy as she has always wanted to see real ghosts, because she loves horror themed media.

Crowley later shows up once again to Ramshackle Dorm to provide Yuui with a change of clothes as she only had the ceremonial robes to wear, is here when he realizes Yuui is in fact a girl, which makes him even more confused as to why the dark mirror made such a huge mistake summoning her to the school. Crowley quickly finds out Grim was still on school territory, but Yuui convices the director to let Grim stay and offers to be responsable for Grim, even thought he was an annoying creature, Yuui was moved by Grim's determination to become a magician and dind't want his dreams to be crushed so easily. After that Yuui and Grim are "promoted" to janitors of the school, so they could keep their right to remain on school territory.

As Yuui already got everyone's eyes on her for being the magicless kid that had to babysit the cat monster that ruined the opening ceremony, she decides to hide her true gender and pretends to be a boy so she wouldn't get any more unwanted attention from the students of the school.

From this point on, Yuui's complicated adventures on Night Raven College will begin and as she starts to get along better with Grim and create a bond with him, she wiil meet strange and troublesome students that will make sure her new school life is not boring at all.

Yuui and Grim eventually get the right to assist to the school as students (both assist as one student) and later on after dealing with the troublesome trio of the Octavinelle dorm Yuui decides to get a job in Monstro Lounge so she can sustain herself and Grim, as Crowley only did a minimum effort to cover their needs.

Backstory

Yuui is the only daughter of a typical Japanese marriage. At the age of 7, her mother died after being involved on a car accident; after enduring for days on intensive care in a hospital, she finally succumbed to her wounds and passed away, leaving Yuui and her father by themselves. Losing her mother in such an abrupt way made Yuui realize, even at such a young age, how fragile life actually is, in consequence she became a bit overprotective of those she holds dear and panics when they get hurt or try something dangerous.

With only her father left as her only family, Yuui became a very independent child as she felt the need to support and protect her father who, in her eyes, looked very fragile after losing his wife. She learned to cook, did the house chores and when she got old enough, she either helped her father with his ramen shop or found part time jobs by herself to support her father financially.

Since she was a child, Yuui always got along better with boys than with girls, she wasn't really a tomboy or anything of the like, she just found it easier to talk and play with boys. When she started middle school, Yuui was determinated to make new friends (specially female friends), as her only friend was Kouta Yamano, a boy she knew since elementary school, and so to bond with girls she became much more interested on makeup, fashion and taking more care of her personal appearance. She succesfully befriended a group of girls of her class, however she failed to have good judgement and ended up getting close to a group of shallow girls that later would backstab her; as much as Yuui genuinely saw these girls as her friends, they unfortunately didn't feel the same way about her and didn't hesitate to be cruel to her when she started to stand out more among her classmates because she was considered pretty and because she was a good singer.

Afraid of being left behind, Yuui simply ignored whenever her "friends" messed with other girls to humiliate them, or when they started to demean and be cold with Yuui herself when they got tired of her. However she couldn't stand to be quiet anymore, she just couldn't pretend to be something she wasn't, she couldn't just watch while those girl were acting horrible toward other people and herself, so one day she simply confroted the girls and bluntly told them how disgusting they were for behaving the way they did, but doing this was the beggining of the nightmare for Yuui as these girls later made sure Yuui was ostracized by everyone and tormented her for a long time.

Rumors about her being supposedly "promiscuous" were spread and soon the only one person willing to talk with Yuui in her school was her friend Kouta, as everyone else either believed the rumors and didn't want their reputation ruined by hanging out with her, or they simply didn't have the courage to offer her a hand and claimed "it wasn't any of their bussiness". With the time, the rumors became worst and crazier, not to mention the harassment from her former friends, however Yuui simply withstanded it and pretended she was ok, she never mentioned the bullying to her father cause she didn't want to give him any more worries, and she didn't rely on Kouta either as she didn't want his reputation to be ruined too.

Time passed, the situation slowly calmed down and the girls finally got bored of messing with her, however they succesfully ostracized Yuui and now she remained alone with Kouta occassionally checking on her, as she insisted on keeping her distance from him to not get him involved in her issues. Her second year of middle school started, and Yuui developed the habit of spending club hours on the music classroom singing her favorite songs or trying to compose her own. This is when she meets Toru Iwata, a boy she will later fall deeply in love with, as he was very kind and prince-like with her.

Yuui and Toru started a relationship later and Yuui felt like she finally was getting the happy school life she desired. Toru, who started his own band a while ago before meeting Yuui, convinced her to be the singer of his band, and she despite having stage fright decided to try her best for Toru, as he was such an important person for her. Yuui's happy days however will end abruptly when one day she accidentally overhears a conversation between Toru and one of his friends, where he shows his true colors and confesses he never really liked Yuui, he just needed a vocalist for his band and Yuui was easy to manipulate, he also states "I'd never really date that slut". The shock of getting to know the truth was enough for Yuui to finally break down, she was just too tired of everything, tired of not being able to fit, tired of being humilliated, and she just couldn't keep her facade anymore. That day Yuui ran away from school and disappeared for the day.

Kouta, who also overheard Toru's confession, confroted him and punched the guy on the nose, just to immediatly chase after Yuui whose presence wasn't still noticed by Toru. However, Kouta lost track of Yuui and couldn't find her, he then takes the desition of contacting Yuui's father, despite knowing she doesn't want him to know her problems. Both of them search for Yuui, but is her father who finally finds her crying and defeated on a bench in the park. Yuui finally opens up to her father and tells him everything she was feeling how lonely she felt after that betrayal and how much she still missed her mom. Her loving father comforts her and talks with her seriously, about how she isn't alone, about how she shouldn't push others away and endure everything by herself, about how much her friend Kouta cares about her, about how she should rely more on her father "Your old man is not as fragile as you think, rely on me a little more". After that day, Yuui vented and let out all the negativity she was holding and started to feel lighter, the next day when she went to school and met with Toru she was sure to punch him in the nose just like Kouta and left him without one single explanation. Her heartbreak however, took some time to heal entirely and left some scars on her heart that will make her wary of falling in love again in the future.

On her last year of middle school, Yuui spent her time with Kouta,  who she apologized to for keeping him away. Is during this year that Yuui develops an interest on art and starts to take part of the art club of her school. Despite everything she endured, all of those experiences helped her to shape her character and become a much more resolute person, she also learned to have better judgement when approaching other people. Third year passed uneventfully.

Graduation came, and Yuui finally started a new school life as a High School student, this time she decided to keep her distance from girls as she was afraid of repeating the events on her middle school. She also stoped wearing makeup as she didn't want to stand out, and after half of her first year passed she takes the desition of cutting her long her. Yuui spent her first year normally, dedicating her time to her activities in the art club and helping her father in the ramen shop, she managed to get along with most people of her class and some upperclassmen, however she really didn't make meanigfull friendships. She still kept in touch with Kouta who went to another high school, he started a relationship with a girl of his class and wanted to introduce Yuui with her, however Yuui avoided to do so as she was worried of not being of the liking of Kouta's girlfriend.

Yuui's second year of high school starts uneventfully, however one day her monotonous life will change drastically as she unexpectedly will get dragged to a whole new and strange world. After Yuui gets involved in an accident, her souls gets trapped in Twisted Wonderland with no recollection of the accident she had. If she can succeed on her mission she will be able to go back to her world and her normal life, however if she fails she will simply dissapear and won't be able to reincarnate. What kind of "mission" she needs to fullfil?

Trivia:

  • Yuui is not really an athletic person, therefore one of her worst subjects on school is P.E. Back in middle school Yuui tried to improve her physical condition by lifting weights, but this only worked to increase her stamina and her physical strength, she's still pretty bad at anything related to sports and athletics.

  • Another reason why Yuui doesn't consider being a singer as a future work is because she's not too talented at writing songs and has "unpopular" tastes when it comes to music.

  • Voice Sample of my desired japanese VA for Yuui, Maaya Sakamoto (Yuui would speak like This). And a Sample of her singing voice, Mary Elizabeth Mcglynn.

  • Yuui does not belong to any club officially, but sometimes she helps some clubs with simple tasks. She also partakes in the activities of the Light Music Club and the Mountain Lovers Club sometimes. In the Light Music Club she takes the role of the singer, but only in the club's activities as she still refuses to perform live, when they perform live the role of the singer goes back to Lilia. In the Mountain Lovers Club she accompany Jade climbing mountains and she uses her sketchbook to draw and keep a record of the different plant and fungi species they encounter, these activities help Yuui to train her average physical condition and it is a great way to practice with her drawings as she wishes to pursue a career on art.

  • In the Light Music Club, Yuui and Lilia usually are the ones in charge of writting songs, but their songs are usually about heartbreaks or melancholic/dark subjects, which is why Cater has to supervise them and is the one to make corrections on their lyrics. Kalim wishes for them to write a happy warm song at least for once. Apart from writing song lyrics, Lilia and Yuui have sung duet songs together in the club activities.

  • List of songs Yuui has sung so far:
    • I Want Love
    • Love Psalm (a song she and Lilia wrote and the very first song she sings in front of an audience with the Light Music Club, after taking the first steps to overcome her stage fright)
    • Fade (duet with Lilia)
    • Waiting for You
    • One Third of Love (Yuui at first is conflicted about her feelings for Floyd and doesn't know how to properly deal with them. Lilia then advices her to write a song about her feelings so she can let them out, and so she writes this song which is her very first love song. She keeps as a secret from everyone else, except for Lilia, that this song is about her feelings for Floyd)
    • Fallen Angel (second song she attempted to perform in front of an audience, this time at Mostro Lounge)
    • Wild Side (a song that she sings with Marley and Ike while they perform the piano and the saxophone. They sang this once during closing time in Mostro Lounge, and this is how Azul discovered Yuui can sing and offered to perform with Marley and Ike. But Yuui refused Azul's offer at that time)
    • Un Poco Loco (got possesed in the Endless Halloween event and sung along with Lilia)

  • Since Yuui looks like someone with innocent tastes, everyone is very surprised when they find out she likes Horror media and very gorey movies. Her favorite kind of horror are Slasher movies and Lovecraftian literature or Lovecraftian inspired media.

  • To keep her true gender a secret, when she has to show as a girl she wears a wig and a disguise. This fake identity is called "Yuuli" (name that Ace came up with) a supposed student from the all-girls magic school, Blanca Rosa School. However in the curse of the story, seeing more people were finding out she's a girl, she starts to stop caring about keeping her gender a secret and becomes more careless about pretending to be a boy.

  • Yuui refers to herself as "Boku". This made it easier for her to blend in and keep her facade since "Boku" is more used by boys than by girls.

  • She gets an extra payment from Azul for trying his experimental potions. So far she has tried: a potion that turned her into a Shrimp Mer, a potion that was supposed to turn her into a Moray Eel Mer but turned her into a literal moray eel instead, a potion that made her more bold (a trick from Azul since he wanted her to overcome her stage fright so he could use her as a singer for Mostro Lounge and get more money, but this failed miserably), among other crazy potions.

  • Back at her world, Yuui was the one in charge of supervising hers and her father's money. This is because her father is incredibly naive and usually falls victim of pyramid schemes.

  • Yuui's father owns a ramen shop and she usually helps him with it. Apart from working on her father's shop, Yuui have had other part time jobs to help her father financially.

  • She's best at art related subjects, whereas she struggles with science related subjects (In her school, Math and Chemistry; in Night Raven College, Alchemy and Potions)

  • Because of her experience with her ex-boyfriend, Yuui is naturally distrustful of princely guys, hence why many of the students of Royal Sword Academy rub her the wrong way.

  • Yuui is not dead, she remains alive in Twisted Wonderland, however since she's a soul foreign to that world if she gets to die then she won't be able to reincarnate and her soul will be simply lost.

Creation Trivia:

  • Yuui was conceived as a character with a plain appearance as the canon MC of Twisted Wonderland is oftenly described as "plain" in comparison to the students of Night Raven College. Her story attempts to be as loyal as possible to the canon, however she also has her original touches in both story and personality.

  • In her very first rough concept she was supposed to have the role of an Otoge MC, therefore it was planned for her to have "Routes" with plenty of the characters from the game, however this idea was quickly discarded as Yuui has a distinctive personality and does not has good chemistry with every character, therefore romance was pretty much impossible with some of them.

  • In another discarded rough concept, Yuui was supposed to be dead and  Yuuken  was supposed to be her boyfriend who couldn't get over her dead. Because of Yuuken's strong desire to bring Yuui back to life, both of them would be transported to Twisted Wonderland without any memories of their real world, and Yuuken would transform into a cat monster (Grim) until he regained his memories. This idea was quickly discarded because it was too far from the canon story/concept of Grim and Yuuken's (not to mention it erased Grim's character entirely to be replaced with Yuuken's) and generally it differed too much from the canon plotline. Additionally, I never liked entirely the idea of her and Yuuken dating, as it was just an excuse to link Yuui with the "Yuu" of the manga.

  • Before deciding on her pink-ish brown hair, on her beta design she had first blonde spiky short hair with pink/purple shades, and on the next one she had dark hair with blue highlights and her face being partially covered.

  • Yuui is not a self-insert character nor a "Yuu-sona". She's simply shaped after how I would like the MC to look like.
