Biography

Mai Kallikos comes off as an aloof, solemn person when you first meet them. They're very touch-averse and will often avoid getting close to anyone at the office. They prefer to only talk about work with their co-workers and refuse to engage in their personal lives. Hidden behind their cold exterior is a sensitive, timid person. Mai can be very outgoing and expressive around their loved ones, doing things no one would expect of them. Their fear of intimacy causes them to only stick around their twin brother, Zach, and childhood friend, Greyson.

It’s well known that Mai comes from a fortunate background. They were born into a wealthy family with both of their parents present in their life, attended college, and became a bulwark stationed in the towns. While not the strongest bulwark in their department, Mai was very special for someone of their kind. People born with O+ blood rarely ever become bulwarks because of their especially weak magic. Due to Mai’s incredible ability to accurately cast spells quickly, they were one of the few people with an O+ blood type to become a bulwark. They were respected for their reliability and fortitude in the face of abominations. What Mai was most known for was their ability to use lighting magic, a type of magic only a select few people were eligible to do.

No one believed someone as weak as Mai could actually become a bulwark. Everyone was sure they wouldn’t make it past the entrance exam. But Mai didn’t let their magic hold them back and worked hard. They had proved them all wrong and became a successful bulwark. However, it wasn’t until a particular fight with a new form of abomination that Mai endured an almost fatal injury. They contracted blood poisoning from their open wounds, causing permanent damage to their magical abilities. Since then, Mai’s magic has become significantly weaker to the point where they are considered a liability. With Mai unable to fight in the towns anymore, they were transferred back to their home city as a failure.

Mai lives with their head held low after their injury. All the people who had doubted them and the people who wished for their failure knew about Mai’s incident. They could hardly do magic anymore, yet they were allowed to keep their job as a bulwark. Typically, when a bulwark is unable to fight anymore, they are dismissed, but Mai stayed due to their connection to the higher ups, according to rumors. Nepotism is the only reason Mai is still a bulwark. City bulwarks are known for being weak; it’s where all the weak bulwarks get stationed because there are virtually no abomination attacks in the city. The kids with rich parents, who just want to brag about their status, are always placed in the city.

It’s been roughly two years since the accident. Mai is no longer a bastion, but a lowly pillar that just follows orders. With four dead partners already staining her record, Mai is determined to not lose anymore. However, strange events start to occur in the city. The number of abomination sightings increases dramatically, and bulwarks begin to turn up dead or missing. Her first partner since transferring to the city was Rocky Cosilas, who had disappeared one night only to show up dead in an alleyway, completely maimed. Her second partner, Banyu Menodios, mysteriously disappeared without leaving a trace—it is assumed he was attacked by an abomination one night when walking alone. At this point, Mai now has a total of six dead partners. To Mai, the deaths of her previous partners feel like a curse—a curse that their colleagues chastise them for. In fear of losing even more, Mai developed an overprotective personality. She becomes driven to do the unthinkable to protect her loved ones.

Relationships

Zach Kallikos [Family]

Zach is their older twin brother, who they love and cherish dearly. They would destroy the entire world for Zach's safety. Mai has always been very protective of him despite his larger stature and stronger magic. They are very close to each other and go everywhere together. Although it's very rare for them to get into arguments, there is heavy, unspoken tension between them.

Greyson Donald [Friend]

Mai and Greyson are close friends, but in an aggressive way. They love gossiping together and being petty over small things. Their constant bickering results from their sibling-like friendship. Mai always found Greyson's anarchist view to be troubling, but found herself adopting his mentality the more they hung out. Their friendship looks rocky on the outside but they’re very close and willing to die for one another.

Abieyuwa Praxion [Friend]

Mai's new partner at work. They do not get along in the beginning. Mai finds Yuwa’s terribly selfish mentality to be dishonorable. Regardless of their disagreement in ideals, Mai still has an overwhelming need to protect Yuwa from harm. Due to their paranoia from their past, Mai constantly jumps at any opportunity to help Yuwa. Eventually, their rocky partnership blossoms into a romantic relationship. However, when Yuwa’s secret is revealed, Mai's love for Yuwa turns into hostile malevolence.

Owen Draktetos [Co-Worker]

There is something about Owen that Mai finds disturbing. She hasn't talked to him much after the recent incident, but from the few interactions she's had she found Owen to be... off. Mai has heard many nasty rumors about Owen, so she keeps her distance from him. When Zach starts to take an unfortunate liking to Owen, Mai gets more and more suspicious of him.

Cwen Xeraphion [Adversary]

No one ticks Mai off more than Cwen. Despite having different professions, Cwen and Mai have this unspoken rivalry to see who can be the best. Having met years ago, Cwen is constantly trying to one-up Mai, whether it be in social status or magic ability. The rivalry has gone on for years and frankly, Mai is just tired of it. Mai hopes for Cwen to grow past this obsession she has with her.

Angelo Coslias [Adversary]

They have a troubled past with one another. While they used to be on friendly terms with hints of a friendship blossoming, it all went downhill after the disappearance of Banyu. Angelo holds a deep hatred for Mai and won’t hesitate to degrade her any chance he gets. They must occasionally work together, so Angelo keeps it on the down-low most of the time.

Gavin Calpraxia [Superior]

Although Gavin is significantly younger than Mai, Mai treats him with the same respect she treats all her elders. He’s always been a very understanding bastion in comparison to her previous ones. She appreciates how seriously he takes his work and respects his ambitions. Their relationship is mostly professional, but they will have a friendly chat every once in a while when the opportunity comes up.

Rayna Seleon [Superior]

Mai admires Rayna so much it can come off as idolization at times. Rayna was Mai’s teacher in the past when they were training to become a bulwark. Mai is continually in shock at how strong Rayna is despite having the same weak blood type as them. They will regularly go to Rayna for advice on relationships or to vent about their frustrations. Rayna’s logical approach to situations always brings Mai comfort.

Rocky Cosilas [Co-Worker]

A previous partner of Mai’s. Mai and Rocky weren’t friends outside of work but got along well while they were together. Mai doesn’t know much about Rocky as she always kept to herself about her personal life. Any questions were swiftly avoided or brushed off. Since Mai was the same as Rocky, their bond never grew deeper.

Banyu Menodios [Co-Worker]

A previous partner of Mai’s. After Mai and Rocky stopped working together, Banyu was paired up with Mai. As is typical with Mai, she never got close to Banyu. Truthfully, she found him to be annoying at times because of his overly-optimistic and hyperactive personality. She would say one thing and he’d interpret it as something completely different. It was an okay partnership that didn’t last long.

Javier Charkos [Co-Worker]

Javier and Mai used to work together in the towns. While not on the same team, Mai often acted as his mentor. Javier looked up to Mai with starry eyes, seeing them as their hero and aspiration. After the accident, Mai can no longer bare to look him in the eyes—they’re a disappointment and a failure of a role-model. Javier agrees.

Maverick Eukos [Co-Worker]

A long-time co-worker and friend of Zach’s. The only times Maverick tries to engage in a conversation with Mai is if he’s looking for Zach or if she’s with Zach. Surprisingly, Mai has found their personalities mesh well together. Maverick is a playful guy but never takes things too far and respects everyone’s boundaries. She wouldn’t mind being with Maverick more.

Monique Chrysanike [Co-Worker]

A long-time co-worker and friend of Zach’s. Mai rarely converses with Monique unless it’s for work-related reasons. If there’s no one else in the room, Monique will talk to Mai about office gossip and drama. It’s usually a one-sided conversation, as Mai does not have much to say. They’re happy to lend an ear and give mediocre advice if that’s what Monique wants.

Yana Kyriloas [Co-Worker]

Mai’s assigned doctor. Their relationship is strictly professional. From the little time they’ve spent together, Mai finds Yana to be a very kind person. Yana is understanding of Mai’s health issues and doesn’t look down on her for having a weak blood type. Mai doesn’t know much about who Yana is as a person, but she does find her to be quite attractive.

Flint Diopis [Superior]

Mai has known Flint since she was a child. He was close with her parents, so she viewed him as a family friend. When Mai’s parents were absent from home, Flint would often fill in for them. He was like a second father to her and Zach. Due to Flint’s serious exterior, Mai and Flint have a mostly professional relationship today. When they talk, it’s mostly about work. Every once in a while, they’ll discuss family issues.
