About

For all his intelligence and engineering skill, plus his kind nature, Val really doubts and underestimates himself too much. He has a slightly low self-esteem and he has trouble speaking up for himself, but thankfully he has amazing friends who always do it for him.

The grandson of Peppy Hare, Val is the resident mechanic and a pilot in the third generation Star Fox team. While his piloting skills aren't as good as they could and tend to be hindered by his nervousness, he is an important member nonetheless. He also happens to be dating their leader, Jim McCloud.

Background

Val's childhood started off very happy and normal. He was an only child and received plenty of attention from his parents. His mother worked as an astrophysics teacher on Fichina, where they also lived at the time, and his father was a major in the Cornerian army, spending long stretches of time away from home for work.

Val was interested in all kinds of air ship building from a young age, and his parents wholly supported this interest. He loved spending time with his grandfather, Peppy, who always had time to play with him and tell him stories of his adventures. Val also adored his uncle Fox, who dropped in every now and then to say hi to his 'step-sister' Lucy. Fox also doted on his 'nephew' (partially because he was also hoping to have a child soon).

Little Val was really excited when he heard his favorite uncle would also have a little boy soon. The 3-year-old would not stop talking about the soon-to-be-born baby, and when said baby was born just a day before his own fourth birthday, Val gushed about how they could have parties together when the baby got older. He was very gentle with and protective of the little baby fox from the start, and they did end up having several joint birthday parties in the years to come.

When Val was eight years old, his father died protecting Corneria from a late wave of Andross's ex-followers. It was devastating for the boy, but Lucy knew how much it hurt to lose your parent as a young child, and made sure to help Val get over his grief and shock in any way she could, including having him go to therapy for a little while. While the death of his father made Val very sad for a long time, with therapy and his family's help he did move on and go on to live a normal childhood once more.

When Val was around 14, six years after his father's passing, his mother found new love with an avian woman named Robin Gales. Robin was an astrophysics scientist who Lucy had met during a conference she was hired to speak at. Robin was sweet and soft-spoken, and she and Val got along amazingly from the start. It was strange for the boy to have a new parent figure in his life at first, but he saw how happy his mother was and never felt like his father was being replaced, so he didn't mind too much. To add to that, Robin was always interested in his hobbies and life, but didn't pry or try too hard to be a mother to him, and that made it much easier for Val to accept her as a new part of the family. Soon, the three of them all moved to a new house on Corneria, which Val liked since he was now able to see his friends more often.

Val continued to pursue his interest in mechanics and became rather knowledgeable and skilled in the field. His mother paid for him to go to a top university to study engineering, and he later graduated at the top of his class.

His friends were always very important to Val, and during his teenage years they really became a tight-knit little group. They also included the younger kids from the start, which Jim and Charlie really appreciated. Val was still rather protective towards Jim even though the latter didn't exactly need to be protected.

After graduating, Val worked in engineering research for a couple years until Jim took over as the leader of Star Fox and asked Val to join his new team. Val was hesitant to take up the offer as he wasn't a stellar pilot like the rest of his friends, but by this point he had developed quite the crush on Jim, who then succeeded in convincing him that he'd be a valuable asset in the team.

Val trained hard to become a better pilot, meanwhile also designing and building the team custom ships based on the newest Arwing model blueprints. (Stella pestered him about hers until he caved in and gave her a pink version of her brother's ship, despite the team wanting a more uniform color scheme.)

By some miracle (Val's words) Jim ended up developing feelings for Val as well, and surprised the rabbit by confessing to him. Val has been absolutely over the moon ever since, though his happiness has honestly been dampened by Charlie's switch to the enemy side.

Trivia
  • He's gay/demisexual, but honestly can't imagine being with anyone else than Jim
  • Lately he has been learning to bake
  • He can't stand spicy food
  • Horror movies are usually way too scary for him

Jim McCloud

boyfriend
They have known each other since the day Jim was born and Jim has always been Val's favorite person in the world. Val has always looked up to Jim for his bravery and kindness despite being older than him, and eventually developed a huge crush on him. To his astonishment, Jim returned the feelings, and the two are now happily dating.

Drake Toad

friend/teammate
Having been close friends for years, they get along very well, even though Drake likes to tease Val sometimes. He means well and the teasing is much gentler than with others, so Val doesn't mind much. Val also likes Drake's dad since he's a mechanic too.

Skyler Monroe

friend/teammate
Even though Skyler's flirtatious and extroverted nature is the complete opposite of Val's, they're still great friends. Val is a little envious of how easily Sky navigates social situations, even though he has no desire to be as popular as the cat and his twin sister are.

Stella Monroe

friend/teammate
Just like with her twin brother, Val is great friends with Stella as well. She often demands he create pink versions of all their gadgets and spacecraft mods for her, and Val always ends up doing it. He doesn't mind though, and he does enjoy Star's company a lot.

Lucy Hare (and Robin Gales)

mother
Val has a great relationship with both his mom and stepmom, and their family is very warm and loving. Lucy has always encouraged Val to follow his dreams. She's extremely proud of him and his accomplishments and always tries to boost his self-esteem. Val calls his mother several times a week just to chat.

Peppy Hare

grandfather
Val adores his grandfather and spends time with him as often as he can. He loves sitting down with a cup of tea and listening to Peppy's stories back from when he was a Star Fox pilot. Peppy is also often the first person Val goes to with any problems he might have.

Charlie Grey

enemy...?
They used to be good friends and Val always really liked Charlie, so it really hurt him when Charlie turned against them and joined Star Wolf. Now Val is extra nervous about going against Star Wolf, especially since Charlie often comes after him in battle.

Thika Powalski and Team Star Wolf

enemy
Honestly, Val is terrified of Star Wolf and Thika especially. With him being less skilled of a pilot and prone to panicking in combat, they tend to see him as an easy target. Val would never tell his friends just how scared he is to confront Star Wolf though - they do get paid to put an end to the criminal team's missions, after all.
