Personality:

Sakurako can come across as regal and serious if one doesn't know her well. But really, she's a pretty straight-shooter when it comes to what she thinks and feels, which can make her come off as goofy, sometimes. She's surprisingly grounded, for a career nukenin pirate who's made multiple bingo books. She expects respect and teamwork from those around her. She can be pretty effective in leadership positions, but her affinity for violence means she can sometimes hurt her team's morale (among other things) in anger. She acts like an old sailor, and talks about the weather a lot. Her first love is the open ocean, and her second is a real challenging fight to the death.

History:

tl;dr - Sakurako's parents taught her that relying on anyone but herself was wrong. She became a nukenin of Amegakure after trying to kill Konan. She joined a group of bandits, which she then turned into her pirate crew. When they accidentally attacked Mangetsu Hozuki, her entire crew was wiped out before she managed to kill him. After losing them, she realized how much she cared, and determined to let herself rely on others in the future. After years of operating alone, she built the beginnings of a new crew with two other nukenin, Orbeez and Taiyo.

Sakurako was born in Amegakure, her mother a war refugee and her father a native. Because of her mother's extreme trauma from her experiences during war, she was emotionally unavailable with her daughter, and pushed her hard to train from the moment she could hold a knife. Her mother wanted her to be strong, so she'd never be captured like her. Her father, a civilian, wanted her to be fully independent, and taught her everything she'd need to never need anyone else. So when she learned everything she could from them, she left to be completely independent at the ripe old age of 14. She made a ninja out of herself despite no lineage, and never needed anyone else.

In her early career, Sakurako was drawn to the idea of poisons. She wanted to turn her body into a host for them, and began building immunity by drinking toxins and slowly increasing her dosages. She experimented with infusing her chakra into them, trying to integrate them into her body. Eventually, she found one that took to her chakra perfectly. She developed a way to store the neurotoxin in her body until she needed to use it, and would drink more once her store had been used up.

Sakurako's rise in the ninja world came along just as Amegakure became embroiled in civil war. Sakurako never liked Hanzo, but she liked Pein even less. Still, she joined the rebellion to usurp Hanzo, because his paranoid leadership had been bleeding the village dry. She used her perceived loyalty to get close to the "angel," in hopes of getting to Pein himself. She wasn't good enough, and was found out, leading to a confrontation with the angel. She figured killing the angel would be good enough if she couldn't get to the god himself, and went all-out. Unfortunately, after a drawn-out fight, she found herself outmatched, severely wounded, and realized in a shock that she was going to die. She managed to pull off a distraction enough to escape, just barely. Now, 19, she was an enemy of her home.

She'd been wounded in the fight, badly. Paper torn through her stomach and one of her legs, enough that she almost didn't survive despite her escape. She dragged herself to the water, delirious, and tried to get it to help her, to seal her closed. A lone traveler spotted her and approached to help, and in her desperate, half-awake state, she grabbed him and bit him, in her mind wanting to take his life-force. In doing so, she accidentally learned to suck chakra through her teeth. She drained the civilian and it gave her just enough energy to make it to a village and get some medical supplies. She escaped the villagers trying to make her sit still and accept help, and hid by a lake where she treated her own wounds. Given their severity and her amateur medical knowledge, the full recovery took a year. She spent that time traveling east, attempting to train and reopening her wounds a number of times along the way.

Sakurako became a scavenger, hunting down scenes of assassinations after they were done and taking whatever she could find. One of her best discoveries was a bloom of chakra-infused wood. She cut down a log and carved herself a tool. Once, she accidentally arrived while the assassination was still being carried out, and got caught up in the conflict. During, she met a sand shinobi who saved her life. It was the first time anyone had seen value in her life, though she stubbornly refused to let it mean anything to her, and continued on.

On her travels she joined a group of bandits. Her parents' lessons about never needing anyone still rang true, but she found herself aimless and bored, and used the thieving cabal as a way to alleviate that. When the leader died, she was elected to take over as the strongest of them, which she accepted. By now they were operating on the penninsula closest to the Land of Water, and Sakurako made the executive decision to get a boat. Despite being the leader, she kept all her bandits at arm's length, so when she made this decision without consulting anyone else, many became angry and left.

They had much more success robbing on the foggy waters bordering Kiri. She and her remaining followers, a small group, learned together how to operate a ship and read the weather. They made improvements to their boat and became a tight-knit group of comrades. Even though Sakurako felt herself becoming fond of her crew, she refused to let herself accept that she was attached. She never needed anyone. She wasn't going to start now.

Sakurako was 24, and the ship they'd just boarded had one of the Seven Swordsmen of the Mist aboard. His name was Mangetsu Hozuki, and he was a league too far. It didn't take long for him to slaughter the entirety of Sakurako's crew, leaving her the last standing to face off with him. It was in that moment Sakurako was forced to understand just how much she'd come to love her team, and despite knowing she was outmatched, attacked Mangetsu in a rage. It was a long fight, one he had the upper hand in for the most part. Her luck turned when she caught him off-guard with a bite, neurotoxin taking away his ability to liquefy. With that, his fate was decided. She killed him and threw his body overboard. She took what she could from the ship, then set it ablaze to give her crew a burial at sea.

She resolved to not shut people out anymore, if anyone would ever be able to love her again. She thought of the sand shinobi, and decided she would try to find him again. In no rush, she took it upon herself to run her ship alone, and keep her crew's work alive. She continued to make a name for herself as a pirate, and took jobs that further added to her notoriety. At one point, a Kiri nukenin stowed away on her ship to get across the sea to the mainland, and after she discovered them and had a spat, they settled things. They seemed very interested in learning how to run the ship. They came back months later and invited Sakurako to join their newest contract, and she accepted. When Sakurako felt herself growing endeared to the other nukenin-- Orbeez-- she made sure not to stop herself.

They ran into the sand shinobi on the job-- Taiyo-- and the rest was history. The three found they worked well together, and Sakurako invited both to make a home on her boat. She is trying to be better, for them, her new crew. She knows her old team are watching, and she hopes they're proud.

Fun facts: Sakurako has an odd synesthesia that makes her sense of taste highly sensitive-- she can taste smells in the air, and uses her mask to mitigate this, sometimes. She's really good at sea travel, and feels most alive on the water. Despite being a very well-practiced fisherman, she has horrible lucking catching anything.
