Design Notes

  • Zuko from ATLA meets Yelena from Hawkeye! An overdramatic, emotional mess.
  • She always wears her blue pendant, which was her mentor, Sapphire's last gift to her before she disappeared. It glows from the inside out, and supposedly helps her regulate her abilities, but Inara's begun to consider it does... more than that.
  • She uses her batons to extend her reach, as well as to hook over the side of fences and buildings as needed. They can also function as a block to her electrostatic abilities, so she uses them for mundane stuff too.
  • Her hair rarely is loose; she tends to keep it neatly braided or pinned in place, to cut down on the effects of her electrostatic abilities. It's fully capable of standing straight up in a halo around her.
  • She prefers her bare feet over boots, simply because she has a greater range when it comes to her abilities. The static tends to function as a buffer against anything that would harm her, and most stuff gets pushed away as a result. Don't be weird about it.

Inara Holloway

Personality

"If I shock you, it is nothing personal. Unless you try something, then it is entirely personal. "

Local electrostatic goth assassin for hire. Despite Inara’s apparent self-sufficiency and overall stoicism, she's constantly trying to prove herself to those around her. She holds a great deal of insecurity over her abilities, and often pushes herself to do more than she's capable of controlling. Paired with her inability, at times, to recognize when her abilities are overclocked, she represents a danger to not only those around her, but herself- even though she won't let herself admit it . As much as she wanted to take the place of her mother, codename Hellfire, she was told that she doesn't have the control required to take on the requirements of her job. In response to this news, she embraced the cataclysmic results of her powers surging as her greatest asset to fulfill the requirements of her assignments- and has found some comfort in this, if rather brutal, sense of purpose.

Likes

  • Thunderstorms. Big ones. Given that she’s safely able to do so, she likes to sit outside when the storms roll over. It’s so quiet otherwise, it makes her feel like the only person in the world.
  • Oven mitts and rubber gloves with pretty patterns on them. They do a decent job of preventing her from shocking people, and have the added benefit of being stylish. Kind of.

Story

When her mentor was killed in the line of duty, Inara refused to accept the that the hero who murdered her was justified in their actions. Halcyon's darling Whirlpool had been a longtime ally of Sapphire's, and for a routine mission to end in the manner it had, was beyond Inara's capability to believe.

She resigned herself to whatever losses her actions would incur, in the hopes that the revenge she gained would be enough to honor her adoptive mother's legacy. She expected the stories in the paper that turned her mentor's lifetime achievements into a long-running scam. She expected the near-impossibility that was getting close to a hero protected under AEGIS's constant surveillance. She even expected the raid on her apartment as soon as she reached out to her mentor's allies to get the information on Whirlpool she needed.

What she didn't expect was being held back by Whirlpool's apprentice, Daisy Christiansen. Or her sequential decision to face Inara head on.

Relationships

Inara was trained to fight supers older than her, wiser than her, more deadly and jaded than her. And Whirlpool's apprentice was supposed to be all of the above. So when she met pink-haired, former figure skater Daisy, Inara kept her guard up and her expectations murderous. And despite her attempts to extract the needed information about Whirlpool's whereabouts, Daisy remained stoic and loyal- which was frustratingly misaligned to her general appearance and cheery demeanor.

Worst of all, her attempts at intimidation were met with playful responses, needlessly entertaining chases, and annoyance, rather than fear. It was rude, and uncalled for, and Inara immediately found herself looking forward to their next run-in. Inevitably, they ended up friends, co-parents to a ridiculously tiny dog, and, eventually, roommates. "I'm just playing the long game," Inara would say, like a liar.

Inara would die for Yoda. Upon her earliest interaction with the dog, she fell in love with the scrawny creature's ferocity and complete and utter unwillingness to let a gigantic, terrifying world overcome her. She's unable to touch Yoda directly, as a result of her unpredictable powers, but that hasn't stopped her from altering oven gloves and rubber gloves so she can still interact with her. She remains relatively removed, and talks to Yoda in a refined sort of way in public, but can be caught cradling her like a baby and speaking in a high, squeaky voice that makes Yoda do the adorable head-tilty thing puppies do. She'll never admit to it. .
