PERSONALITY
  • Manipulative — She's an incredibly quick-witted person and, coming from a family of tacticians, she's known for always thinking several steps ahead. She has a sharp tongue and knows her way around a conversation — she revels in leading others in circles and turning the tables on them mid-conversation. Yueying is also a smooth talker and she knows how to charm others into doing her bidding. Although she can be blunt, she certainly knows how to exercise tact and each of her words are always carefully chosen.
  • Selfish — As a princess, she grew up not wanting for much in life, but the stifling lifestyle also pushed her more rebellious side to develop in selfish ways. She often only cares about her own enjoyment and doesn't care about others or how her actions will affect them. She's aware of the consequences and aftermath of her tricks, but life is short and she deserves to enjoy her life how she pleases. Others mean nothing to her. The palace servants often called Yueying a heartless child and if that's what they're going to think of her, then so be it. On the other hand, Yueying seems to have a great disdain for overly selfless and noble people. She grew up seeing her older siblings swallow hardship after hardship for "the sake of the nation and family name," and she can't help but wonder what the point of all of it is. Caring so much about his responsibilities did nothing but give her brother Xun headaches and heartaches, and holding her royal duties as a princess in such high regard did nothing but nearly get her sister Meiren killed. So, no thank you. Yueying will think of herself first.
  • Apathetic — She seems to be in a near constant state of ennui. She has bright ideas for adventures and has a tendency to pack her daily schedule full of exciting activities. Yueying acts as if her time is limited — and although she doesn't elaborate on her long-term life plans, it's clear to those around her that some kind of clock is ticking in her head. When things are too quiet, that feeling of disatisfaction creeps over her and she realizes just how bored she is with everything around her. Nothing ever seems to last, so she's always chasing that next thrill.
  • Indulgent — Yueying doesn't seem to show genuine interest in many things in her life — something may catch her interest for a brief moment, but she quickly grows bored and moves on. However, when she actually likes something, she really likes it. She has a penchant for being almost gluttonous and overindulging in her favorite things, chasing after that spark of joy at all times. She's almost borderline obsessive towards certain things. Luckily, her upbringing as a princess also taught her control... or to at least be able to fake control.
  • Realistic — Although she adored soft, romantic fairytales as a child, she grew up to realize real life was nothing like her novels. As an adult, Yueying is much more pessimistic, especially when it comes to love and romance; she gave up on her first love due to their difference in class and status. She's been surrounded by couples who are deeply in love with each other, so she knows that kind of relationship is possible outside of fairytales, but she wonders if such a thing is possible for someone like her; however, she's also seen how much her siblings have suffered in love and life in order to get to where they are today. So Yueying is painfully aware of what the future most likely has in store for her as a princess.
  • Creative — She has a deep love for the arts, especially literature. She can spend the entire day reading under a tree on a warm spring day and feel perfectly content with the stillness of her world. As a princess, her days were spent in lessons with various tutors, but she especially loved writing and music. Yueying can easily come up with poetry or music to play on her erhu, but her mind is best at concocting colorful schemes and trickery to keep her life exciting.
  • Temperamental — As a princess and a Bird, she was raised to always keep up appearances. Her culture places a major emphasis on saving face and to keep negative emotions private. Yueying compartmentalizes many of her emotions, but this has led to her having a rather explosive temper when she feels too overwhelmed and unhappy. The palace servants and even her own family would give her such disgusted looks whenever she lashed out, so even as an adult, she feels great shame over her strong emotions. She felt Zhou was the only one who was patient with her and would give her a chance, always asking her why she felt the way she did and listening to her woes. Everyone else would turn their backs to her, whispering about how she was such a terrible child, such an awful brat, such a spoiled little creature.
  • Avoidant — Yueying is certainly the type of person who would rather feel nothing at all than to have to suffer due to loss. Although she never knew the type of people her parents were before the death of their first daughter, she wonders if they were once loving, kind, and emotionally available people. She understands that loss completely changed them and Yueying doesn't think she can handle loss herself — she already doesn't have much to lose in the first place. Her first experience with true loneliness came after her first close friend, Hyejin, moved to the Dog nation, and Yueying didn't handle it well at all. Her second experience with loss was her own doing, and although she isn't fully conscious of the aftermath on her life, leaving behind her first love affected her views on love and trust. Her general distrust of others and deep-rooted fears has resulted in Yueying being an extremely guarded person.
  • Chaotic neutral — Her morals can be questionable at times because she only cares about the well-being of herself and a select few people. Everyone else is a blur to her. Like most Birds, she can also be quite vengeful if she feels she's been slighted and Yueying can have a bit of a cruel streak, too.
  • Acts of service, touch — Her culture holds grooming and tending to the hair of one's family or life partner in high regard, so Yueying is highly protective of her hair. She generally doesn't like being touched by others, but secretively loves it when her friends dote on her and give her the physical affection she missed out on in her childhood.
BACKSTORY
  • grew up as the bratty third princess of the royal family of the Bird nation
  • spent her childhood wreaking havoc and making the servants miserable; however, it's a bit of a self-fulfilling prophecy because the servants compared Yueying to her very quiet, very gentle older sister, Meiren, and saw Yueying as being too emotional despite being just a child
  • is very observant of others and quickly became very aware of how she was treated differently due to being princess; she also saw how two-faced others could be and decided if they were going to try and get on her good side for their own benefit, she'd make use of them for her own benefit
  • Hyejin is her first true friend and they teamed up to cause even more trouble around the palace, but Yueying became very moody and unhappy with her life after Hyejin moved away
  • despite their difference in class, Zhou became the second person Yueying trusts; he's kind and patient with her and he helps her through her bouts of anger... so naturally, she decides to make him squirm and starts up an affair with him, but even though she falls in love, she knows they can't be together
  • decides to make up a plan with Hyejin for the two of them to run away and have their own adventure in the world; they'll travel freely, see all the beautiful sights, eat all the delicious food, and scam all the gullible stupid men
  • after the initial fun and games of getting to freely travel the continent with Hyejin, she begins to lose interest in people in general and falls into a feeling of ennui; she doesn't realize it, but she's chasing the feeling of excitement and safety she had felt with Zhou
  • somehow meets a somewhat famous jeweler, who is actually a rather lazy Monkey in his free time, and his very suspicious, very tall Pig bodyguard (who turns out to be a demon hunter), but they're somewhat entertaining men, so the girls decide to stick around and the four go on adventures together...
  • very, very, very slowly falls in love with the very tall, very stoic demon hunter after many shenanigans that involve: her teasing him constantly, him buying her meals to get her to shut up, going on midnight walks together, discussing literature and life philosophies, her teasing him all the time, getting kidnapped and almost eaten by an ancient demon, watching him almost get killed by said ancient demon, teasing him within an inch of his life on a daily basis for the past year, etc...

RELATIONSHIPS

expand/collapse all
Madoku Douma [ walletlover ]

"Ma~do~ku~ Dou~ma~ I'm hungry~ Treat me to something and I'll treat you, too~"

She thought he was "suspiciously tall" at first and had zero interest in him. She thinks his immense sense of honor, duty, responsibility, and blah blah blah are incredibly annoying. All of his ideals are too traditional for her to put up with. She spends awhile avoiding him and only tolerating Douma's existence, but Yueying eventually figures out he's fairly kind, patient, and easily flustered, so, naturally, she finds enjoyment in teasing him. They slowly become good friends through their love of poetry and Yueying finds herself looking forward to their midnight strolls when she can't sleep and he's just come back from a late job. The two of them even make it a sort of unspoken game to show each other "hidden gems" — secluded and scenic areas near whatever town they're staying at — and they often slip away from the group to get some peace and quiet with just the two of them. She also finds herself memorizing the poems he writes for her, thinking of them fondly on the nights he's away on a job.

After going through a traumatic encounter with a rare and powerful demon that results in Douma nearly dying in her arms after protecting her, Yueying grows to realize how he had become such a major part of her day-to-day life. She appreciates his eternal patience and level-headedness despite always trying to push his buttons (it's just so fun making him squirm over dirty jokes and her relentless teasing), and her days are that much lonelier when he isn't around.

She has reservations regarding their difference in class and her general distrust of people makes her keep Douma at arm's length; however, she finds herself drawn to him nonetheless, feeling unusually calm and safe in his presence. Yueying continues to tread carefully with her feelings toward him and his feelings toward her and she's wary to commit to anything because fairytales are only make believe, but she lets him hold her hand as he pleases and she doesn't seem to plan on letting go of his hand anytime soon either.

Wei Hyejin [ best friend/sister ]

"Hey! What good are you? Huh? You're the world's tiniest guard dog! Hmph!"

She thought Hyejin was a grungy bum when they met as kids until Hyejin punched her. It was the first time anyone had ever dared to stand up to Yueying and she found it thrilling. The two became the best of friends and went on to become a troublesome duo. Hyejin taught her to look beyond her own privileged life and also how to pick pockets, sneak around, stab a man, etc. Even after Hyejin moved to the Dog nation, they kept in touch through letters because they had become closer than sisters. Hyejin is one of the few people in the world who Yueying feels she can talk to without judgement. However, Hyejin's absence was a punch to the gut Yueying hadn't been prepared for. Yueying had spent most of her childhood believing no one was on her side or would ever be on her side because of who and what she was, but Hyejin's friendship and companionship proved otherwise. Yueying grew extremely lonely and agitated, becoming that much more aware of her isolation in her own home.

Now that they've run away from home together, traveling from nation to nation together is like a dream come true for Yueying. They get to dress how they want, go where they want, eat what they want, and scam as many foolish men as they want.

Yueying would kill for Hyejin and she knows Hyejin would do the same for her. She loves Hyejin with her whole heart and considers Hyejin the first person to truly love her; Hyejin is the only family she really needs.

Liễu Sáng [ walletfriend ]

"Oh, I found a novel you might like. Let's discuss it over the dinner you promised me~"

They share an interest in the arts and Yueying has a great appreciation for his jewelry. She generally thinks Sang has a warm demeanor and he reminds her of both her brothers; he's a bit whimsical like her older brother and artistic like her younger brother. She's not at all surprised to find out he keeps up two personas and identities — it actually reminds her even more of her older brother. She finds his carefree attitude refreshing, and, in some ways, she wishes she could enjoy life as much as he seems to.

Zhou [ advisor/former lover ]

"Haha, shhh. Are you shaking? It's fine~ No one will see us~"

He was just the son of the palace librarian who had caught her during a vulnerable moment. Because he hadn't passed judgement and had shown her a warm smile, Yueying's curiosity was piqued and she formed a bit of a soft spot for him. Had he always worked here? How come she hadn't noticed him before? What were his motives for being so kind and patient with her? Whatever she wanted, she always got, and none of the palace staff liked having to deal with her anyway, so Yueying easily made Zhou her personal advisor.

Hyejin's departure from Yueying's everyday life had made her deeply unhappy and more temperamental than usual, but instead of whispering behind her back and running away from her like the other palace staff, Zhou helped Yueying manage her emotions, especially her temper. She thought of him as very unlike most Birds because he never told her to get a handle on her emotions or to try and bury them because she was making him uncomfortable. Her fondness for him grew and Yueying found herself taking him around with her everywhere. As they grew closer, she became bolder and bolder. She started an affair with him and thought his shyness and overall fear of getting caught was amusing and exciting. Yueying liked the idea of being caught in a scandalous romance, but she knew they didn't have a future together because of the difference in class and power.

Although she liked playing games and pushing him around, she did genuinely love Zhou. Being with him was thrilling and she doesn't realize it, but she continues to chase that same feeling of excitement and safety, not understanding why other men just aren't as interesting and why they don't make her feel the same way as when she was with Zhou.

Efe5M2t.png
Jin Měirén [ older sister ]

"Could you please speak up for once, sister? I can't hear you."

They weren't close at all when Yueying was younger. She always thought of Meiren as a bit pathetic and too timid, and she didn't understand why their older brother Xun had such a soft spot for someone as dull as Meiren. However, as an adult, Yueying can acknowledge that Meiren was terribly neglected by their parents and generally shunned by everyone around them. She feels sorry for the tough life her sister has led and has a bit of admiration for all of the hardships Meiren survived to become empress of the Dog nation. They still aren't close, but Yueying has a sense of respect for her sister now and they're cordial for the most part. Yueying still thinks she's boring, though.

14234550?1641679189
Jin Xun [ older brother ]

"Why? Why not? Why can't I? It's not my fault! You never talk to Meiren like this!"

He's annoying. Everyone thinks everything he does is so wonderful. It's unfair he's the golden child of the family and the only one to have their parents' love. It's also unfair he only pays attention to Meiren.

14234508?1641677928
(name tbd) [ younger brother ]

"That's not even going to leave a mark! Don't be such a crybaby!"

They're close in age, so he was often following behind Yueying as she ran around the palace, looking for trouble to cause. They'd often team up to bully the servants, but it wouldn't take much for Yueying to turn on her little brother and tease him, too. They grew apart over time (were they ever really that close, though?) and her brother actually mellowed out quite a bit and became more introspective and artistic. In the years leading up to Yueying's departure from the palace, she'd sometimes like to watch him paint on quiet afternoons.

Efe5M2t.png
Emperor & Empress Jin [ parents ]

"Yes. Understood."

She doesn't see her parents often and from a young age, she recognized that they treated Meiren especially different. She always knew her parents didn't love any of them except for Xun. The first daughter of the Jin family passed before Yueying was born, so she only knew of her oldest sister through stories; however, she can't help but feel upset that her sister died and caused her parents to close off their hearts. Because of her upbringing, Yueying is left wondering if people can ever recover from loss.

Efe5M2t.png
Wei Yang/Wei Tianyu [ brother-in-law ]

"I think you still have fleas."

Yueying thought the long-lost prince of the Dog nation would be a charming diamond in the rough, but all he turned out to be is rough. He's disgusting, ill-mannered and a total disappointment to her young, romantic heart. However, once Yueying got over her immense disappointment, she can sort of appreciate that Wei is a clever survivor and his story is pretty cool. She still thinks he's loud and trashy, but he's also laid-back and his outlook on things is interesting. She also secretly thinks Wei's love and loyalty for her sister is charming and admirable.
