Personality

Birthed by Sagefeather and sired by Duskwatcher, Jaypaw is a cat who has traditional CanyonClan blood flowing strongly in his veins, and it shows in both his looks and in his upbringing. He is quite proud of his Clan and eager to learn the traditions and culture he’s only lightly dabbled in during his kithood. More than anything, though, he wants to be a warrior— while he’s a bit of a pushover with his sisters, he’s always been excitable when it comes to his future, and the (likely embellished) stories he’s heard have only affirmed his decision in striving to be the best CanyonClan has seen. Jaypaw looks up immensely to his father, and being the child of a leader certainly adds a degree of pressure that perhaps drives some of his personality.

One might think the son of Duskwatcher, CanyonClan’s former leader, would be plenty self-assured, but Jaypaw tends to be the opposite. He desperately seeks the approval of those around him. He’s very self-conscious about his skill level as an apprentice and about what his future might hold; it’s incredibly easy for him to fall into the trap of comparing himself to others. As a sensitive tom, Jaypaw’s skin is easy to get under teasing-wise, and any indication that some cat’s upset (or StarClan forbid, disappointed) with him doesn’t sit well with him. Even if he can be rambunctious and rash, he’ll always try to make it up if he does something wrong, at least.

More often than not, he acts to impress, doing his best to be tough and brave like how he sees his father. He’s more of a follower than a leader, despite his insistence that someday he will do CanyonClan proud and become their leader someday (an idea he likely gleaned from his sister, admittedly). If he’s around someone who intimidates him, he’ll probably get wound up and play more into the boasting, snooty facade— and his sisters are among those cats. Sandpaw is physically stronger than he is, and Heronpaw is more intelligent, so... where does that leave him?

His mentor is Specklestone, a stone-faced and stoic molly, and he struggles to tell how she feels about him. He worries, as always, about making her proud— and he has to wonder sometimes if he’s doing everything right, since he’s never once seen her smile. It’s clear he has a lot to learn, both about himself and about the world around him; he simply hopes he’s ready, and that his mentor will be there to guide him.

Appearance

Jaypaw is a long-legged, gray, classic tabby tom with intense amber eyes and a cream underbelly. Equipped with a classic CanyonClan build, Jaypaw's physique allows him to be swift on foot and well-camouflaged among the rocky terrain of his territory. His most notable feature is his large ears, and although he has begun to grow into them at long last, they will likely remain quite prominent even into his adulthood.

Relationships

Duskwatcher

While he was initially hurt both by Duskwatcher's decision to mentor Sandpaw and by the secret half-Clan litter he sired with Russetmask, a warrior of BriarClan, he still loved him dearly and looked up to him. His anxieties about not living up to his or the Clan's expectations might revolve around Duskwatcher's role in the Clan, but in the moons that he was alive, Duskwatcher always made it clear that he cared deeply for his family. No matter what the other Clans and even some of his Clanmates think of his dad, Jaypaw will always remember him as the cat who let him win in their play-flights, who taught him how to swim, who spun grand tales about the great leaders of before, and who told him that he would always be proud to have him as his son.

Sagefeather

His mother, who died giving birth to him and his siblings, was supposedly an excellent warrior and someone who always spoke her mind. He looks a lot like her, or so he's been told. He wishes he got to meet her.

Dawnpaw

One of three of his half-siblings from BriarClan. While he was at first wary of his new siblings when they came with their father to join CanyonClan, concerned that he would have more competition for Duskwatcher's attention and approval, he actually grew to like having them around. They didn't tease him nearly as much as Sandpaw and Heronpaw did, and it was cool to be able to show them CanyonClan's home and customs. It saddened him to see them return to BriarClan, even if that was where they belonged, and he hopes to see them at Gatherings.

Pigeonpaw

One of three of his half-siblings from BriarClan. Backstory

Jaypaw and his littermates, Heronpaw and Sandpaw, were born to Sagefeather, a renowned warrior of CanyonClan, and sired by Duskwatcher, CanyonClan's current leader. Originally, they intended to have no relationship with the leader, as he was simply meant to act as a sire, but when tragedy struck and Sagefeather died while kitting, Duskwatcher was swift to take the helm of fathering the three kittens himself.

Once Jaypaw reached the age to be an apprentice, he was assigned Specklestone, a stoic warrior of CanyonClan, as his mentor. At first, his desperate quest for approval and her stone-faced disposition made him uncertain of their relationship, but after Duskwatcher was murdered by Lilyfire at the Gathering of the Blood Moon, she became a pillar of support for him while he grieved.

His favorite prey is lizard. Especially the tails!

He still sleeps with a piece of Duskwatcher's old bedding in his nest. It comforts him whenever he's having a hard night.
