Appearance Description

Sugar is a Sinner, but her body type and size are similar to a medium sized imp. She has pink-red skin, curly 3C hair, a small chest, and horns toward the very front of her head. Her horns are the same color as her skin. From behind, she is often misinterpreted and approached by others as an imp, but her horns lack striping, and her feet are two-toed paws with catlike toe beans. If Sinners' appearances are somewhat related to who they were in life, Sugar believes that her implike appearance is because she always felt like people viewed her as small and inferior, and Hell validated her deepest fears about herself as eternal punishment. She also kept her terrible eyesight. When at work, Sugar wears an apron with her shop's logo on the chest. Her pupils change shape to reflect extreme moods- stars for excitement, hearts for love, etc. Her default eyes have soft red swirls. When experiencing extreme emotion, she may have black shadow wings, usually drawn with a white outline. Her high emotional state tends to attract small, emotional spirits. These spirits are similar to the ones in Alastor's employ, although far more useless. They can perform extremely small tasks, but are generally just a daily nuisance.

Personality

Pure brat energy. Sugar is a nondenominational witch, dabbling in various forms of magic and practicing with whatever she can get her hands on. She loves to craft, and picks up new hobbies on a near monthly basis. She laughs often and loves puns and bad sex jokes (but is easily flustered when the tables are turned!) She is outspoken and feisty, and often a bit snappy. If she disagrees with someone, she will tell them immediately, and often quite rudely. She is extremely fond of the arts, and loves bad jokes, puns, music, literature, and stage performances. She can be harsh and judgmental, especially when challenged, but its usually just "tough love." She is a little bit high maintenance and loves expensive food, expensive clothing, and expensive decor.

She does NOT allow rude customers into her shop and does not serve people who don't respect her. If a customer cannot be convinced away with harsh words, they are in danger of having their drink poisoned! She hates being called an imp or treated like a child. When she was alive, people often made fun of her for her height or childish appearance, and she refuses to tolerate it for the rest of eternity.

Very few, rare friends are allowed close to her. She values those with ambition, bright spirits, and big dreams. She has a soft spot for people with big dreams but low self esteem, wanting to push them to fulfill their potential. Kindness can be a rarity in hell, and while Sugar's hope in humanity is a flickering candle flame, it is still gently burning. Her cafe is a place that welcomes unusual sinners down on their luck. Polite customers are met with charity and warmth, especially if they manage to make Sugar laugh.

Life In Hell

Sugar owns a café named “Coffee and Curiosities.” Here, she sells whatever crafts she’s been working on, as well as seasonal desserts and coffee made with flower and herb infusions. While her work in magic and voodoo is a majorly private affair, it is rumored that a big of her power works its way into the drinks and cakes she serves. A unique feature her shop offers is the ability to allow Sugar to choose your coffee, called “Pick Your Poison.” The option isn’t cheap, but its fun! Sit at the counter, talk to her for five minutes, and she will concoct a customized drink using flavored syrups and infusions based on the feeling of your personality. These drinks sometimes seem to come with unique, mood-boosting side effects. How strange!

Her apartment is located directly above the shop. Sugar’s apartment is a colorful disaster. Beginning in the entryway, a mural sprawls across every wall, creeping into every room. It is ever expanding, as she adds to it whenever the fancy strikes her. The theme of the mural is a fantastical forest. When she is happy, she might paint fairies dancing among the lights and the trees, or flowers bloom. When she is sad or lonely, rotten leaves and mushrooms appear near the floor. When the lights are turned off, elements of the forest mural glow. The mural’s focal point is several unicorns grazing in a meadow, situated behind the couch. The furniture in the apartment is all antique, with warm reds, plenty of gold, and cool greens and blues. You can see the evidence of her crafting in every corner, and things are always in disarray. Art, sewing, soap, candles, and even baking supplies are littered across the floor.

Sugar is not a resident of the Hazbin Hotel, but she does sometimes visit the hotel and stay for the weekend.

Relationships

Lucifer

Sugar met Lucifer at a masquerade hosted by Charlie at the hotel. Believing him to just be a handsome masked stranger, Sugar was smitten with him the entire night, and it appeared to be love at first sight. Sugar left the ball thinking she'd had a romantic single night with a handsome stranger, until Lucifer Morningstar, unmasked, arrived at her cafe the next day. Sugar was absolutely mortified and overwhelmed by his affections. What appears to be a whirlwind romance at first glance is rife with their various issues- Sugar's hunger for power and low self worth, Lucifer's depression and loneliness, and the push and pull of their extreme power gap. They flirt awkwardly around the various issues and all the other political and social ramifications that come with a king favoring one of his supplicants. Sugar sometimes pretends they are just friends who discuss their shared hobbies, but Lucifer's affection borders on obsessive. Lucifer's lack of respect for sinners and his pessimistic attitude put their ideals in conflict with each other, but neither of them can stay away from the other, and hell is starting to notice. Lucifer is intensely jealous of Sugar's relationship with Blitzo, and ALSO despises her closeness with Alastor, seeing both of them as direct threats.

Blitzo

Blitzo and Sugar used to have a toxic relationship where they rarely talked about boundaries or feelings, which was obviously a problem. They just did what made them happy and avoided complicated conversations like "what are we" and exclusivity. They both struggle with intimacy and attachment, so were nearly always in conflict, despite clearly having strong feelings for each other. While their love for each other is strong, they did eventually break up, and spent a long time apart, with Blitzo assuming Sugar would never want to see him again. Sugar pursued Blitzo and reassured them that there are many ways to love someone, and she hopes to be there for him through all his ups and downs, as he reconciles with the people he's hurt and tries to be a better person. The two of them are now close friends, and Blitzo is always welcome in the cafe.

Alastor

Alastor and Sugar often call each other "cousin," but are related by community and not by blood. Despite sharing a storied history and growing up together, Alastor constantly pretends to forget that he knows Sugar, acting as though he's meeting her for the first time whenever they meet. He goes out of his way to say whatever will upset her the most, and is extremely good at attacking her pride. When he wants to come calling in for a favor, he suddenly remembers to call her "my sweet cousin." Sugar rarely refuses him, despite claiming to despise him. As awful as he is, Alastor seems to have a soft spot for his family, although he shows Sugar no true kindness. Being left alone by him should be considered gift enough. Alastor has ALSO taken notice of Lucifer's attention and jealousy, and while he has absolutely zero romantic interest in Sugar, he loves to toy with the King's feelings and let him THINK that there might be an interest. Sugar is not attracted to Alastor, and his attention is more playful than anything.

Darling

Darling is one of Sugar's rare and dear friends. Sugar guards their friendship fiercely from interlopers. She even gave Darling a job as bookseller at Coffee and Curiosities, where she curates a rare book collection in an adjoining shop space. A sweet drink and a snack are always ready for her at the counter. Early in their friendship, Sugar gifted Darling with an amulet. The amulet used to belong to Alastor, but Sugar stripped Alastor's magic from it and replaced it with a protection charm against malicious intent before regifting it to Darling. However, the amulet still carried a familiar "scent" from its original owner, and when Alastor returned from his hiatus, he smelled the amulet on Darling and was instantly alerted. Sugar's attempt to protect her friend led to Alastor showing interest in her, and Darling sold her soul. The two have been in conflict ever since, although they are still close friends. Sugar resents that Darling has aligned herself with Alastor, but because she does love them both dearly, she won't really do anything about it.

Echo

When Alastor called Sugar in for one of his many "family favors," he introduced her to Echo-  a collector and thief he's been working with for one of his strange and nefarious schemes. Little did she know that Echo would become a permanent fixture in her life along with Darling. When new and rare books appear in the bookstore half of Coffee and Curiosities, Sugar is forced to turn a blind eye, or be tormented by Echo and Darling's gaslighting. Echo's stolen wares bring in good profit for the cafe anyway.

Sugar's Human Life + Death

Sugar was a french creole mixed woman with a similar background as Alastor. She grew up in New Orleans, speaking both Louisiana Creole and English. Sugar was a tame and delicate lady who followed all of the rules of society in the early 1900s. She lived with a certainty that there was good in the world, and someday, good deeds would be rewarded.

While Alastor was white passing, Sugar was not. New Orleans was in a process of Americanization which many creole people resented. Tourism was at a high as people traveled from other parts of the country to experience the loose morals of creole society, and experience the corruption (and the women) there. Sugar stood out as a light skinned black woman, and faced many of the roadblocks of young women of her time. She took solace in helping her community. A lover of romance, fantasy, and magic, and growing up in a community with direct ancestral links to Voodoo, she was apprentice to her community's mambo, and mainly focused on learning helpful rootwork to keep traditions born from Louisiana's unique relationship with slavery alive. While Sugar took the correct path in learning the craft, Alastor practiced alone- a dangerous path that did not align with the desires of their ancestors and the spirit of voodoo. Under direction of her mambo, Sugar begrudgingly kept a close eye on her cousin and offered to help or teach him, to bring him closer to his ancestral bonds and Iwa. Alastor vehemently declined.

Sugar persisted, becoming Alastor's shadow out of a determination to see him brought back to the light. One night, when Alastor thought he had shaken her, she witnessed one of his terrible crimes. She fully intended to report the murder, but Alastor's charm, his sweet smile, and his charisma talked her out of it. Somehow, Sugar found herself roped into Alastor's life of violence. After he realized she wouldn't turn him in, he began to use her as an unwitting honeypot or an alibi, placing her in dangerous situations to see how far he could push her. Stuck between a desire to reform him and a desire to protect and help him, Sugar became slowly more involved.

Eventually, her involvement led to deadly consequences. They fell into an easy pattern, with Sugar playing bait with her sweet demeanor and unassuming looks. She would lead men into the dark, and Alastor would finish the job. One night, Alastor didn't show up. Abandoned and alone with a violent man, Sugar was forced to run for her life. She slipped and fell into the river, drowning to her death.

Although Alastor swears her pathetic and dramatic death is her own fault, Sugar has never forgiven him for leading to her murder, and being the reasons he ended up in hell. Now, she cannot even call upon her ancestral spirits from hell- because she never partook in evil voodoo like Alastor, the spirits that would help her have abandoned her. Sugar dabbles in other forms of magic as a consolation, but feels the loss of her life and her power acutely.
