Valerie is a 19-year old student in a small town high school during Devil's Triangle. She's one of the most popular girls in school and often scolds her little sister, Kyler, because she is over-protective of her. When Sandra joins the school as an art teacher, Valerie is the only person who is suspicious of Sandra's intentions and is able to see behind the facade that Sandra puts up. Despite idolizing Sandra and harboring an attraction for the woman, Valerie also dislikes how fake Sandra has become. She plays a major role later on in the novel when she exposes Sandra's affair on social media, indirectly causing the second murder.
In Romance Uncliched!, Valerie has grown to be a mature 30-year old manager of the RomCon startup. She is in charge of human resources and customer service. Known as the ice queen among her employees (including her little sister), she can be very strict and sharp with her words. Despite having broken up with Shawn Doyle once at the end of Devil's Triangle, she has hooked up with him again in the world of Romance Uncliched!
Background
Valerie was a latchkey kid. Her parents were both too involved in their work and left Valerie and Kyler with their grandparents.
When they were young, Valerie and Kyler were very close. However, after Kyler saw Valerie trying out a cigarette, Kyler naively reported the incident to their parents. Realizing that the sisters required supervision, their parents decided to control their lives to the point of being a helicopter parent. Due to Valerie's rebellious instinct, their parenting technique often didn't work on her. So they gave up on reining her in and focused all their efforts on Kyler.
When Valerie's parents tried to distance Kyler away from her, she objected but was easily overruled. The two sisters grew more and more distant.
History
At the start of the novel Devil's Triangle, Valerie is introduced as being a rebellious, fashionable teen. She seems to hold an unreasonable grudge against Sandra although that is later discovered to be the result of her adoration of Sandra and intuitive observation of Sandra's real personality.
When her friend, Shawn, uncovers the affair between Sandra and Mark, Valerie does not intend to tell anyone about it. However, Kyler comes back in tears after being rejected by Ray who is upset about the affair. Valerie is fueled by revenge and publicizes the affair on social media under a pseudonym.
After the series of murders occurred, Valerie feels guilty of triggering the events. Finding comfort in Kyler, the two sisters reconcile.
When Valerie grows older, she becomes a manager in the RomCon startup. Her relationship with Kyler in the novel Romance Uncliched! shows that the two sisters are very close now.
