Profile

Physical Appearance

  • Medium length red-orange hair
  • Sky blue eyes, although they appear rather foggy since he's gone blind
  • Fair skinned on the somewhat pale side
  • Medium in height
  • Average physical build with a somewhat slender frame

Clothing Style

Caleb tends to have a fine balance between well dressed and casual. He'd prefer to keep his appearance in perfect order, but since losing his vision he can't really do that as effectively as he used to, which stresses him out. He tends to dress rather simply since it's far easier on him now, and since he doesn't leave the house as often as he used to he tends to dress more casually. He tends to stick with simple t-shirts, usually with his favorite faded jean jacket, or button up shirts (which he wears less often since he tends to constantly check the buttons to reassure himself that he buttoned them properly). At home he tends to wear sweatpants very often, and when going out he more often wears khakis and sometimes jeans. Caleb almost always seems to be wearing mismatched socks also, which Adrian and Austin never mention to him because once he becomes aware of it, he'll never stop being self conscious and obsessive about making sure they do match. He usually has a pair of sunglasses with him to protect his eyes when outdoors, and he'll either wear them on his head or hang them from his shirt collar when indoors. He rarely takes off the gold locket from around his neck, which contains pictures of his parents. Although he's disappointed he can't look at them anymore, he'll often take the locket in his hand and run his thumb across the textured surface to try and calm his nerves.

Personality

Caleb is a mature and responsible young man who tends to be a worrywart and a stickler for rules and order. He was very much the studious type and loved to read, but ever since he went blind he's lost a lot of confidence and has trouble feeling comfortable when he's not entirely aware of his surroundings. Others may note he tends to be stressed out often and fussy about everything, but focusing on other tasks can distract him from his anxiety, so he tries to keep himself busy when he can. He is very book smart, a critical thinker, and has good intuition, but he's also passive and submissive. He'll often not voice his concerns or opinions when in the presence of a more dominant person, and he has very little sense of how to assert himself.

Caleb always tries to keep everything organized, budgeted, scheduled, or accounted for. Keeping on top of tasks is key in maintaining peace of mind for him, and he would like to feel like he's contributing and helping enough. He's very much a follower and supporter, although he is capable of leading on an intellectual front as long as those around him aren't too hard on him. He crumples under pressure rather easily and tends to let others walk over him since he has issues standing up for himself. During his childhood up until he was blinded, he could be described as a bookworm and a bit of a teacher's pet with how much he excelled at and valued his studies. He has a tendency to be modest though no matter how successful he may be, and he does best when he's left to his own devices to work since he gets nervous when monitored or watched, unless he's specifically working with other people.

Backstory

Caleb grew up the middle sibling of triplets, and although he knew his mother doted the most on his younger brother, Adrian, and his father bonded the most with his older brother, Austin, Caleb never felt he needed more love or attention than was given to him. He always felt he received more than enough praise for his successes, especially in school, and he rarely made trouble or complained about anything. However he noticed that Austin would take this as opportunity to pick on him, which he tended to submit to or run from without confronting him. While in school, things always seemed to go smoothly for him, so he wasn't entirely sure how to tackle problems when they came up, and he was too reserved to ask his parents about it and risk getting his brother in trouble. He was surprised that Adrian would take the initiative to scold Austin for his bullying more often than he thought was needed, especially when his relationship with Austin became more strained after their mother mysteriously disappeared before they turned 10. Although he knew why his father and older brother were so tense when Adrian went out on his own, Caleb never reprimanded his younger brother like they did, which made them much closer over the years. This seemed to make the distance between him and Austin grow though.

When they were 16, Caleb found himself following his brothers to the forest that their mother used to explore with Adrian, mostly because Adrian wouldn't be talked out of going and Austin forced him to stop being a pansy and go with them. Deep in the woods they found a strange ruin where they found their father communing with a collective of spirits inside. These spirits became very interested in the triplets once they arrived, and when their father tried to prevent them from taking the boys further into the ruins they became enraged and cast a powerful curse over them. When Caleb awoke he found himself blinded, and he eventually came to realize that Austin was deafened, Adrian couldn't speak, and their father was now dead.

It's been two years since that day that's been burned into their memories. The three have uneasily adjusted to living with missing senses, although the strain of losing their father and fending for themselves has increased tension in the household. Adrian and Caleb have had to formulate their own way of communicating with each other since Adrian can't speak and Caleb can't read his body language anymore. Since the technological advancements of their home city were sub-par, they've resorted to touch based hand gestures to convey things to each other. All three have learned sign language, and Adrian often has to get Austin's attention in order for Caleb to properly communicate with him since Austin isn't a very good listener even with his hearing. Caleb and Austin's relationship has become extremely strained, Austin opting to irresponsible activities to cope with his own depression and Caleb's anxiety and stress escalating to the point where his health has started to decline. Since Adrian seems to be fairing well the best out of the three, he often spends his time at home trying to mediate between his brothers.

However, Caleb's life long fear of the darkness and the resulting paranoia created by his blindness has got him more and more convinced that someone is following him whenever he leaves the house. Caleb almost completely refuses to go anywhere now, but news that Adrian has now gone missing in that same forest from their past may just motivate him to put aside his fears, although his suffering health may render him unable to if nothing is done to ease his worries.

Trivia:

  • Caleb and his triplet brothers were inspired by the concept of "See/Hear/Speak No Evil." I'm pretty sure the first time I learned about the concept was from an episode of Jackie Chan Adventures, in which three of the cast were cursed to have one of those three senses taken away from them. I took the curse idea from that and based the triplets on it.
  • Caleb's first name was taken from the name of a student in my 4th grade class, although they have nothing in common and I just thought it was a fitting name to choose.
    • I purposely picked a name that didn't begin with A so all three of the triplets wouldn't have A names. That seemed like it would be too obvious.
  • When the spirits' curse cast over them, Caleb saw a scorching white light that immediately engulfed his senses and knocked him unconscious. When he awoke, the whiteness burned into his vision faded into blackness, and he hasn't seen anything else ever since.
  • Ever since he was a child he's been terrified of the dark. His magically induced blindness causes him to see nothing but darkness, so he's even more skittish and jumpy than he would normally be.
  • Caleb tends to be a neat-freak, but he's not a germaphobe. He just likes everything to be organized and in a proper place.
  • It is likely he has OCD, and it's mostly obvious when he's doing something like cleaning since he will clean or reorganize things multiple times even when unnecessary. He also tends to lock things like doors or windows several times in a row, especially since he tends to be a bit paranoid about keeping the house safe.
  • Caleb sometimes sits down with Adrian to try and sort out his floofy hair. It never really has much affect, but it's more of a bonding experience rather than trying to achieve results.
  • Adrian tends to click his tongue if he wants to make Caleb aware that he is present or help him locate him in a room. He has several sounds he makes with his mouth to communicate certain things to Caleb more easily since he cannot speak to him and Caleb cannot see his body language.
    • For more in depth conversations, Caleb will usually speak normally and Adrian will either touch his palms in a certain way or guide his hands into hand-signs for more complicated phrases. It is very common to see the two holding hands, either one casually or both when directly "speaking" to each other.
  • Caleb is the shortest of the triplets, being about a half inch shorter than Adrian and an inch shorter than Austin. He's likely a bit shorter because of his poor health.
  • The only good way for him to properly communicate with Austin is if Austin is focused on him entirely so he can clearly read Caleb's signing or his lips, since Caleb usually does both. This is the main reason why Austin doesn't "listen" to Caleb quite as well as Adrian, because Caleb usually is too timid to get Austin's attention if he's not already sure where he is.
    • Despite their strained relationship, Austin is still protective toward Caleb and tends to stand in front of him and place his hands on both of Caleb's shoulders or at the sides of his arms to make his brother feel more encircled and secure when they speak with each other. Caleb might be a little skittish to talk to Austin about certain things, but he does feel physically safer when around him.
  • Caleb tended to receive the most praise from his father during his childhood simply because he tended to accomplish the most at school. This earned him quite a bit of envy from Austin, who would give him a hard time about just about anything just to prove he wasn't as "perfect" as their father made him out to be. This harsh treatment has lingered into the present day, and their relationship has never been quite as close compared to each of their relationships with Adrian.
    • Caleb has tried to stay open minded and reason with his older brother, but Austin would rarely listen to him and had a habit of interrupting him and hurting his feelings, intentionally or not. For this reason, Caleb conditioned himself to simply remove himself from the situation when Austin got too aggressive or harsh. This likely contributed to his habit of running from his problems or just crumpling under pressure.
    • Despite all the bullying, Caleb knows that Austin has never and would never actually physically bully him. In fact, during the two years of school they went through after being cursed, Caleb sometimes had to endure bullying from some of their peers. They would often tease and push him around because he couldn't see, but Austin cut all of that short after getting into a fight with a boy who tripped Caleb in the lunch room one day. Austin ended up breaking the other boy's nose.
  • He often opts to stay home since going out stresses him out when he doesn't have confidence in being able to navigate through the world safely.
    • He also tends to remain at home since his health is rather poor from all the stress he has, and he tends to suffer from illnesses more often than normal.
  • He can get worked up by the notion that his clothing might be in disorder since he can't see himself. He tends to run his hands across his clothing regularly to make sure everything is in place or fastened correctly. He sometimes hides away in his room from his brothers if he feels like he might look too much of a nervous wreck to be presentable.
  • Caleb cries very easily, both because he's anxious and usually on edge, but also because he's always been rather sensitive.
