Clothing Style

Austin tends to dress either casually or in a sporty and sharp style. He prefers very simple designs with no fancy patterns or embellishments, and he dislikes long sleeves. He prefers complete mobility of his arms, plus he is rather fit so he tends to like having them visible, especially around women. His favorite color tends to be red, and a top he commonly wears is a sleeveless white shirt under a sleeveless red zip up vest with a high collar. For pants he tends to wear either jeans or darker brown pants, and he tends to wear dark brown leather shoes or boots when out and about. He usually wears two leather armbands around each wrist, two being his own and the other two once belonging to his father. His earrings are usually either silver or black in color.

Personality

Austin is a short tempered and brash young man who tends to be impulsive and doesn't take directions well. Even before becoming deaf he was never that good at listening to others, and he tends to have issues with being more sensitive and empathetic. First impressions of him usually paint him as a rather confident and casual man, but he can also be rather irresponsible since he doesn't always think ahead, tends to be stubborn, and is slow to admit his mistakes. He can be rather moody and somewhat aggressive at times, and he is often blunt with his words and a little louder than he usually means to be since he can't hear himself anymore. During his childhood he harbored some jealousy for his brothers since they tended to get more attention and affection from their parents. He also has a habit of being overly harsh and critical of his brother Caleb, mostly because Caleb is too passive and lets him get away with it, but Austin behaves a bit better around Adrian since his youngest brother is much more stern with him. Despite his rather rough demeanor, he legitimately loves and cares for his brothers and often struggles to take care of them while also maintaining a strong relationship with them. He tends to not realize how harsh he can be until Adrian points it out to him. He can be a bad listener, but Adrian knows the best ways to keep his attention. Caleb is much more of a pushover though, and although he doesn't mean it Austin often hurts his brother's feelings with his lack of understanding. Austin is instinctively very protective of his siblings though, so although he won't usually vocalize it he does beat himself up once he realizes he's been too hard on them.

Away from his siblings, Austin tends to be ever more irresponsible because he's not nearly as careful about taking care of himself compared to how he is with his brothers. He's a bit of a player and tends to get distracted by ladies easily, but he's not interested in anything longer than temporary physical relationships. While he doesn't actively try to offend people, he can come off as a little rude since he doesn't pay attention to others that closely along with the fact that he can't hear anything. He's rather good at reading lips by now, but more often than not he'll not put in the effort and just fake it. He also doesn't care that much if he screws something up for not paying enough attention, and he rarely feels guilty about anything he does. In certain situations he has a rather alpha male type personality, but in others he's rather dismissive or apathetic about matters. He tends to seem somewhat lazy or unmotivated at times, but that might stem from him trying to mask his moderate depression. Over time he does become more mature and responsible, but he still can be a little hot tempered at times and needs to spend extra effort to keep a level head.

Abilities

  • Premodra rifting - 3/5
  • Mildly sensitive to spiritual energies, but he needs to focus and won't often notice otherwise
  • When he's a little older, he takes lessons in swordplay and becomes rather skilled with medium sized swords
  • Relatively skilled in hand to hand combat, and he gains more of a technique and is more skilled when he's a little older after formal training

Strengths

  • Confident, assertive, and bold
  • Instinctual, quick witted, and works well/better under stressful conditions
  • Visions are clear and rarely require interpretation, often warning him about events that will occur soon
  • Loyal to his family and reliable when it comes to their safety

Weaknesses

  • Tends to be irresponsible with other things like money, time management, etc.
  • Short tempered, a poor listener, and tends to ignore other people's input (usually unintentionally)
  • Tends to take risks too often, and it's either easy to distract him or difficult to get his attention at all depending on the situation
  • Cursed with magically induced deafness, which makes him an even worse listener and more tricky to get his attention

Backstory

Austin grew up the oldest of triplets, and he tended to relate to his father the most and spent the majority of his time with him. However, Austin would also get jealous of how much more affectionate his parents would be with his other two siblings, and although he liked being treated less like a child, he grew envious of the constant attention Adrian would get from their mother and how much praise Caleb tended to get from both of them due to his academic achievements. Austin channeled his frustrations into moderately bullying Caleb, but although he would be hard on him at times for various reasons he would never physically bully him and would always ease up if he ever made his brother cry. He rarely tried the same crap with Adrian since he would immediately call him out on it each time. When their mother disappeared before the boys turned 10, Austin grew closer to his father and developed an even more similar personality to him, meaning he became more overbearing about Adrian's safety. Austin also became colder and more distant toward Caleb during this time, mostly because Austin was having difficulty coping with their mother's disappearance and Caleb was the only one he could get away with snapping at when he became too tense. Over time he also would lash out verbally at Caleb due to pent up frustration that he and Adrian were becoming even closer, yet their father was constantly going out on ambiguous errands and leaving Austin starving for attention. He started becoming more and more irresponsible the less time their father spent with them over the years.

When they were 16, Austin caught Adrian following their father out into the night on one of these errands. He couldn't convince Adrian not to go, so he instead forced Caleb to join them so they could all figure out where he was going so frequently. Their pursuit led them to the forest where Adrian and their mother would often explore, and deep in the woods they found a strange ruin. Within they found their father communing with a collective of spirits, who became very interested in the triplets once they arrived. The spirits attempted to take the brothers deeper into the ruin, and when their father tried to intervene they became enraged and cast a powerful curse over them. When Austin awoke he found himself deafened, their father dead, the spirits gone, Caleb blinded, and Adrian unable to speak.

It's been two years since that day that's been burned into their memories. The three have uneasily adjusted to living with missing senses, although the strain of losing their father and fending for themselves has increased tension in the household. Adrian and Caleb have had to formulate their own way of communicating with each other since Adrian can't speak and Caleb can't read his body language anymore. Since the technological advancements of their home city were sub-par, they've resorted to touch based hand gestures to convey things to each other. All three have learned sign language, and Adrian often has to get Austin's attention in order for Caleb to properly communicate with him since Austin isn't a very good listener even with his hearing. Caleb and Austin's relationship has become extremely strained, Austin opting to irresponsible activities to cope with his own depression and Caleb's anxiety and stress escalating to the point where his health has started to decline. Since Adrian seems to be fairing well the best out of the three, he often spends his time at home trying to mediate between his brothers.

However, after Adrian goes missing in the forest once again, Austin fears he may lose more of his family. Normally he'd go after him on his own, yet Caleb's deteriorating health and his worries about people starting to follow him has him torn between searching for Adrian alone and leaving Caleb at risk or taking Caleb into danger with him.

Trivia:

  • Austin and his triplet brothers were inspired by the concept of "See/Hear/Speak No Evil." I'm pretty sure the first time I learned about the concept was from an episode of Jackie Chan Adventures, in which three of the cast were cursed to have one of those three senses taken away from them. I took the curse idea from that and based the triplets on it.
  • Austin's first name was taken from the name of a student in a different 4th grade class as me at the time, although they have nothing in common and I just thought it was a fitting name to choose.
  • When the spirits' curse cast over them, Austin heard a unimaginably loud cacophony of sounds. It sounded like a combination of unrelenting booming along with all kinds of voices, possibly those of the spirits. The sound became so overwhelming in his head he passed out. When he awoke, could only hear a persistent ringing in his ears, and once the ringing finally passed he hasn't heard anything since.
  • He tended to be most receptive to his father's interests and was always eager to help him out with his hands on projects like renovations or manual work needed to be done when they visited the country over summers. For this reason Austin is rather skilled at building things, especially with wood, and he tends to handle fixing things in their home.
  • He and Adrian communicate usually through a combination of Austin speaking normally and Adrian signing or mouthing words for Austin to read. Austin will sometimes sign as well if it is more convenient to the situation, but he usually just speaks normally since he's not quite as fast or fluent in signing as Adrian is, although he can read it more quickly.
    • Adrian often throws things at Austin to get his attention when they're in the house, usually pillows or socks or something else that wouldn't cause much damage. In public, Adrian typically touches or grabs his arm or hand in some way to get his attention if needed. Austin tends to pay more attention to Adrian readily since he doesn't want to get chewed out by him.
  • The only good way for him to properly communicate with Caleb is to focus on him entirely so he can clearly read Caleb's signing or his lips, since Caleb usually does both. This is the main reason why Austin doesn't "listen" to Caleb quite as well as Adrian, because Caleb usually is too timid to get Austin's attention if he's not already sure where Austin is.
    • Despite their strained relationship, Austin is still protective toward Caleb and tends to stand in front of him and place his hands on both of Caleb's shoulders or at the sides of his arms to make his brother feel more encircled and secure when they speak with each other. He will also try to repeat back what Caleb signs or mouths to him to make sure he's understanding him correctly.
  • Although Austin is usually inattentive, when he is focused on his siblings he is capable of reading their body language very well and usually picks up on how they are feeling rather easily.
  • Austin is about the same height as his triplet brothers, but he is very slightly taller by about half an inch or so. He and Adrian usually look about the same height since Adrian's hair is a bit floofy and adds a little height to him, and Caleb is a tiny bit shorter than both of them, likely due to his poor health.
  • He is strong enough to carry either of his brothers with relative ease, and maybe both of them at the same time, although it would take a lot more effort. Caleb is obviously easier to carry since he's a little bit smaller and weighs less.
  • When still fending for themselves, Austin was the only one of the siblings to get a job, odd as that might sound. Despite his irresponsible behavior when left to his own devices, he'd try his best to ensure he got his paycheck to pay the bills, although he wasn't always perfect of course. He primarily worked for a construction contractor who was friends with their father, so his boss tended to be a bit more lenient with his behavior than most employers would since he was aware of their situation.
  • Austin used to help his father chop wood from a relatively young age when they visited the country each summer. He considers the task as a mindless stress reliever now, and he will sometimes chop wood off the job for his boss to keep himself away from irresponsible tendencies.
    • Even though Austin would do the task for free, his boss usually pays him anyway as compensation.
  • He's a terrible cook when it comes to things like baking or using the oven, but he's better at grilling foods since he used to do so with his father during the summer.
    • He's likely to burn things in the oven or forget things in the microwave because he can't hear any timers and he's usually too forgetful to remember to keep an eye on them to compensate. He does better with food that requires persistent monitoring like grilled foods or certain stove items.
  • He receives his hand-to-hand combat and sword training from Kiama.
  • Very messy and tends to forget to put things away after using them. Caleb frequently nags him to stop leaving this house in such disarray, especially if it make it more difficult for him to traverse their home. Adrian is a little more firm in getting Austin to actually pick up after himself though, since Austin usually can get away with ignoring Caleb.
