Ying Yu is a strong minded and hardworking girl who sticks up to her values. It is nearly impossible to change her mind once she has it set in stone and will never give up a task because of its difficulty if she believes that it is the right path to take. Towards her friends, she is honest and will not sugarcoat her words as she believes that it is the only way to help them improve. She however has no difficulty lying as it is an important personality trait needed for her occupation. She is extremely loyal to her friends and feels personally responsible for their wellbeing. She will put them above herself and will not hesitate to fight for them. Whoever decides to mess with them can consider themselves dead meat. Ying Yu's biggest fear is to see another loved one die, especially under the hand of a royal. Although she understands that not all of them are corrupt, she is cynical and has difficulties trusting them and will not believe in their integrity even if they show kindness as she will think of it as a dishonest gesture.

Ying Yu is a careful organizer who carefully plans every single detail in advance instead of improvisation. She is however adaptable when her plans do not go smoothly and a quick thinker. She is extroverted and loves talking and meeting people, which is how she learns more about the human psyche and how to manipulate others when needed. She is more practical than emotional and would not hesitate to eliminate those who ruin her plans without remorse. "I am Hell's Butterfly, meeting me was your only mistake." She would say to her victims.
Her main living drive when she was young that made her survive her days starving in the streets was to avenge her parents. She refused to die before seeing those who ruined her happiness suffer just like her did. She wanted to live and make them suffer double she did. "You manipulated my parents, how does it feel to have the favor returned?"
As she grew up, she learnt to be less bitter and enjoy her life more instead of constantly trying to improve herself to serve her revengeful purpose although it was ingraved in the back of her mind. She was a very active and extroverted tomboy who loved running around the streets with the other kids of the village. She quickly became their leader with her assertiveness and fearlessness. She made sure about that everyone had a good time ans cared about their safety. She would not tolerate any injustice. Due to her high energy and curiosity to explore, she always had many ideas on what to do. She was overall a fun and exciting person to be around. She was well liked around the village even amongst adults and elderlies as she often talked to them and helped with tasks.

Yingyu believes that her faith had been decided the day of her birth. Kyzelia, her hometown, is a small rural kingdom where farming is predominant. Born in a family that struggles daily to survive, she has seen and experienced the worst of humanity. As a young child, she could not wrap her mind about why people sneered at the sight of her in rags while they praised a similarly aged child dressed in jewels. They were a close-knit family that lived earnestly, dancing and fortune telling. However, it was sometimes not enough due to the economy of the kingdom and it would often leave their stomach empty on a bad day. The prospect of picking up dangerous but well paid jobs increasingly became tempting and her parents were soon in the middle of dirty deeds, becoming the underdogs of whoever their client was. Yingyu clearly remembers the day when her parents took her to the market and buying her new clothes for the first time after their first clandestine task. They promised her that life would become more and more prosperous and the sun will finally shine brighter. It was one of the happiest day of her childhood.

Eventually, her parents were caught. They were working for a royal to assassinate another royal that was in a feud with their employee. Of course, her eight years old self had no idea. She was home cooking for her parents and patiently waited for their return. Her anxiety increased as the sun gradually went down, but she believed in their return. The next day came, but there was still no sign of their return. She went outside in order to perform, as it was her everyday routine. She thought that her parents would be proud that she earned money even in their absence. The moment she stepped out of the house, she would notice people shooting strange looks in her direction as they whispered. She could only make out fragments of their conversations, but what she heard gave her the chills. Her parents were executed and hung in public for murder of a royal. Yingyu could not believe it, until she saw it with her own eyes. She was at a loss about what to do and hoped that it was all a dream that she could not wake up from, but her growling stomach kept reminding her that it was real. She was only eight years old when her parents passed away, but she knew how to cook and do basic house chores as a result to be alone at home most of the time and wanting to make herself useful. She refused to let those who killed her parents live on without regrets and tried her best to survive. However, there soon wasn't enough food left over and she had to beg, steal, and find wild berries to survive. She did not care what she had to do as long as she could live on.

She was soon caught as she was trying to steal jewelry from a merchant. Taking pity on her story and amazed by her strong will to live, the merchant and fellow dancer took her under his wing. Together they travelled back to Mihmir, the merchant's hometown, where he met his daughter Esmeralda who was only one year older than her. Ying Yu was at first very careful of these stranger's intentions and did not open up to them in the first few days. They however showed genuine concern for her and made her feel welcome although she still could not feel like she truly belonged. She slowly warmed up to them and showed more of her extroverted and energetic side as she felt more comfortable in their presence. They became like a second family to her and she made sure to do housework and be as helpful as she could to them. She got along very well with Esmeralda, doing everything together and being insparatable. They were both very outgoing and energetic people who wanted to see more of the world and loved making new friends. They were different as in Ying Yu liked to lead and always knew exactly what she wanted whereas Esmeralda liked to follow and prefered improvisation instead of concrete ideas. Esme was the big sister who gave in to whatever her younger sister wanted and Ying Yu is greatful to have such a considerate friend in her life. Later on, they expended their friends group further, including many other kids from the village such as Edith and Landon. Ying Yu was very protective of her friends, paying special care towards Landon who was a crybaby and seemed to attract bullies from everywhere. Ying Yu knew some dancing from her parents and although she did not enjoy it, it was a memory that they had left behind for her. She continued learning it from her foster father. She knew that if she ever wanted to avenge her parents, she would need to learn more practical skills such as swordfight and self-defense. She coaxed Landon into sneaking in the royal palace to watch the knights training and made him her practice partner as an excuse to make him learn to protect himself from bullies. Although she did mean well for him, it was mostly a way for her to improve her own skills.

Esmeralda

Esmeralda is like her older sister although they are not related by blood. Having taken Yingyu into her family after she lost hers, they grew up together and are very close.
