Born and raised in Sumeru's lush forests, Key grew up with his mother who earned mora by dancing and singing in the city. His father is a salor for hire and would leave off to sea pretty frecuently, but he would always go back home and tell Key about all the places he would go to, he specially spoke about Natlan since that was his origin country and always told Key he would love to take him there when he was older.
One day, when Key was 16, his father was gonna leave for a trip to Natlan, the weather was not ideal and his wife begged him not to go, but he did anyway. Key tried to stop him, even getting on a small boat to catch up to the bigger ship his father was on, but could not do it. Crying and begging for his dad, he suddenly felt a wind current that pushed him forward, he tried to use this to catch up to his father, but alas, it was useless, he went back to shore and there Key found his vision on the boat's floor. He hasn't seen his dad again since that day.
Key grew up and took after his mother becoming a bard in Sumeru. He is very well known around for his cheerful songs often heard at the city's tabern. He also travels to other of Teyvat's regions looking for inspiration for his songs. He has also gained a bit of a reputation of a charmer since he has been seen all over with different people on romantic situations, but it's much more deeper than him just sleeping around, he genuinely cares about all his romantic partners, even takes the time to travel to each region just so he can spend at least birthdays with them. His is also a bit of a drinker, but he just can stop himself from having a good ol' drink.
