Melissa's life started out as one of delinquency and rebellion. She came out as transgender in the middle of high school and, despite being someone people generally refrained from fucking with, had a hard time keeping the few friends she already had. She moved out of home, not because her parents were unsupportive, but because she wanted to prove that she could be independent and take care of herself. At one point she had a fling with a kid she used to bully, Navin. The two of them had an almost relationship before her friend, Koster, threw a spanner in the works, driving the two of them apart for good. The loss of Navin's company drove her down a path of recklessness that bordered on complete self sabatage.
She eventually dropped out of high school shortly before she would've graduated, and turned to a life of petty crime. Stealing things here and there, landing herself in the city's watch house on way more than just a few occasions. The reason? Erik McLain. The one person she felt an attachment to, who just so happened to be a cop. At that point she was living in a shitty youth hostel in a bad part of town and was barely managing to pay her rent and afford food. By getting thrown in the watch house, she was guaranteed a bed and food, and a look at Erik. He soon caught on to her game and invited her to stay at his place. She hesitantly accepted, and evetually fell for him. He respected her, provided her a room, and encouraged her to become better.
