Jonathan was born in late 19th century Chicago, an only child, to Irish parents he never knew. Just before his first birthday, his parents perished in a fire, and Jonathan was instead raised in an orphanage. It never bothered him much; the nuns were his mothers, the other children his sisters and brothers. He never felt as though he lacked a family, but rather that he had an enormous one. He spent his days running down the hallways and causing mischief with his brothers when he wasn't in church or in school.
As an adult and older teen he worked odd jobs for friends and friends of friends, getting his employment from positive word of mouth. He was never a heavy drinker, but he was known to imbibe at bars on weekend evenings with his best friend. The two had something of a physical relationship, one Jonathan hoped would become romantic, but on their way home from a bar one night, they were both killed. Jonathan awoke as a vampire; his best friend did not. To this day his romantic tastes tend to lean heavily towards people who remind him of his first love, whether he realizes it or not.
He became something of a recluse while he grappled with his new reality and dedicated himself to academia as a coping method.

To the outside world, Jonathan is a well-respected American history professor. His students are charmed by his pleasant and easy to get along with personality, and his classes are generally pretty fun. He's more than willing to divert a lesson into anecdotes (which he frames as stories he's found in his research) and enjoys a good back and forth dialogue with his students. He's laid back and calm, sometimes seeming impossible to ruffle, a trait which has on occasion made more unruly students try to push his buttons. Although he's a tough grader, those who've taken his classes give high praise to his detailed feedback, and is well-liked by his students overall.
In truth, however, Jonathan is a vampire, and well over a century old. His calm, pleasant exterior hides a cold, calculating, and somewhat cruel interior. His circle of close friends is a scarce few, but those who know him well tend to like him and trust his advice.
Thanks to his voracious appetite for knowledge, he's more well-versed in magic than most of his peers. For the most part, his use of magic is for his own convenience (such as one spell he uses in lieu of a binder), though he has fashioned charms for his own protection as well.

Benjamin Morris
Ben met Jonathan purely by chance before the former became a vampire, after answering Jonathan's ad seeking a roommate. Despite Jonathan's somewhat cold exterior, the two became close friends, and remained as such even after Ben's undeath and subsequent discovery of Jonathan's identical condition. Jonathan was a crucial resource in Ben's first few months of undeath, helping him learn the ins and outs of his new life.
