"Yeaaah, I dunno about that!"

Name Kerri Byrd
Pronouns he/she
Height 199cm
Age 25
Weight 99kg

Summary

If the rumors are to be belived, Kerri is some hick who saved his town from a monster attack. According to him? He's just a Wywish student available for menial tasks and dungeon crawling.

And hey, he's a cheap hire.

Personality

To Strangers:

The fact Kerri hollers greetings to people right beside him tends to leave an impression.

He's exceedingly observant and more than a little nosy, so good luck staying inconspicuous after catching his attention. Despite that, he often ends up shouting to get quieter members' two cents in and fish answers out of people rather than cough up thoughts himself. If you're to get anything from Kerri's mouth, it's his available times, current rates, and "HEY MAN, HOW'VE YOU BEEN?"

To Friends:

Kerri only gets louder the more comfortable he is. Light shoulder punches to heavy-handed slaps on the back are common, and he barely scales his strength to the recipient. He's the first to check in and last to leave, and he would take a bullet and then some for the treasured few who don't mind his overbearing nature. You can even hear about his mom! Whatever he thinks, you'll be the first to get bludgeoned with it.

He likes to drop off monster parts, baked goods, and cool rocks at people's doorsteps.

To Themself:

To Kerri, being glass-shatteringly loud, overly curious, and completely irreverent towards himself is as natural as breathing.

His inability to avert every disaster ever hangs heavy on him. Even worse, there's substantial evidence that he makes everything worse all the time. And yet, he stubbornly continues trying his best. Regardless of how often he says the wrong thing or sticks his nose where it's unwanted, he can't help if he never tries...or something like that.

Story

Childhood

When the Kingdom of Wywick called for troops, Kerri's parents uprooted themselves from the capital to hide out in in rural Milluria. Past wars had already devastated them and their families, and they hoped to live quiet lives away from conflict. The journey was troublesome, with Kerri born on the way instead of at town like they hoped. It wasn't long after that his father perished, victim to bandit and monster attacks.

Under the cirumstances, Kerri came out unlike either his parents or the townspeople. Being awkward, too loud, and the youngest by a large margin didn't help either. Between a mother who spent more time hunting than at home and most other kids shunning him, Kerri spent a lot of time alone. He made his own fun eavesdropping on people, watching the adults work, and skipping school to pester the town guard.

With time, Kerri grew into a sturdy young man. His mother may have been distant, but she kept him well-fed and enforced strict training. Kerri was always eager to help everyone he came across even once his strength outpaced his ability to control it. It endeared him to some of the townfolk, seeing as Uvall was always in need of help, and he made sure to be good at whatever work he could get.

As soon as he had grown enough, he joined his mother outside town for work. Butchering catches, hauling equipment, and hunting animals and monsters alike became part of his daily life. It was an unsteady kind of peace.

Hometown Hero

On a warm day in a forgettable year, a teenaged Kerri was wandering a ways from town. Even after the bullying stopped, he never really found a reason to stay within its walls. Perhaps a dungeon nearby had been opened and adventurers failed to clean it out. Maybe it was just an unlucky day. By the time he returned home, monsters had torn through most of the town. The mediocre guard was barely a match for them.

Kerri had only a small knife on him, but he immediately got to work. He'd killed a few monsters before, but never alone or so many. By the time a group of adventurers came to help, Kerri had torn through most of the horde single-handedly. It turned out he was good at monster slaying, and all too happy to do it. Even so, he wasn't invincible - he'd collapsed soon after and was consigned to bedrest for months. With the mediocre medical abilities of Uvall, he was lucky to survive. At the very least, it gave him time to learn using and making his own canes - a necessity after the attack.

The graveyard saw plenty more visitors after, and the work to rebuild their defenses took a good few years. But the tavern had a new story to entertain itself with, now - Kerri tearing through the beasts like a man posessed, grabbing three injured and hauling them to safety limping and bloodied, the little Byrd boy, can you believe it? They say the day after, Kerri had to be dragged back home lest he dig every new grave himself.

Life in Kimaris

Despite his shoddy attendance rate and small-town schooling, Kerri squeaked his way into university acceptance as soon as he hit adulthood. It was a fresh start to try more than back-breaking labor and killing things, maybe.

His undergraduate years were tumultuous, but relatively uneventful. The most exciting thing was always compiling his latest struggles in letters to his mom. Whenever he could make the time for it, he would venture back out the walls to have a little fun - camping, fishing, getting mistaken for an adventurer because he certainly was eccentric enough. With no other career options in sight, he leaned into it.

Between forgetting to register his accomplishments with the Guardian Blades and struggling through spellcasting classes, Kerri eked out a bare minimum existence for himself. Extra money was to be sent home - guild-backed messengers only, of course - and he picked up other jobs to stabilize himself between the adventuring gigs. Still, Kerri found himself much more welcomed in Kimaris than his hometown, and that went a long way.

Grad school is much of the same, but Kerri's passionate about his major and finally sleeping on a futon instead of a towel on the floor. As far as he's concerned, everything's turning up. Eventually, his adventuring career might even take off, and he could get his mom to move in with him...!

Relationships

Cassius • ...friend!

An ostentatious hat? Wow, does Kerri want to know who's under it. The urge to bodily pick up Cass and turn him this way and that is nigh-constant. Maybe it's because he so obviously wants attention and validation in every little thing he does. Kerri doesn't get that. But...he's happy to give it! Cass was so nice to him when they first met, after all!

Meleo • friend...!

When it comes to Meleo, Kerri's happy just to know her. Something about them both coming out of little nowhere towns to do their thing - but also the fact she's just a chill person. It sure doesn't hurt that their interests align! Kerri's usual fancies might involve more action, but he's seriously appreciating the less kicking and screaming sides of nature with her.

Design Notes

Physical

  • Built similarly to shotputters. Muscles definition isn't prominent.
  • Dyes his hair.
  • Definitely a little banged-up all over. Feel free to add more scars.
  • Cane used for his left leg (bad knee). Doesn't always need it, can and does use knee braces too, but more likely than not has it.

Demeanor

  • Doesn't keep anything to himself. Hands on his hips, chest puffed out, beaming at you 24/7.
  • Leans down often while talking to people shorter to him. If he's told not to do this, he does it again anyway.
    • Shit posture as a result.

Style

  • Tough, practical clothes. Only breathable fabrics against his skin - his sweat makes it uncomfortable otherwise.
  • Puts on makeup most of the time because he likes the look and color.
    • He can go without. No real hang-ups about that.
  • The most formal he can get is a nice button-up...
    • If given the choice, he'd definitely wear more dresses, robes, and skirts. They're rarities for him since they're not as well-built for trekking in the wilderness, but he likes 'em.
Trivia

  • his name comes from 계란. it became a whole thing.
  • made from anime guys i like + shiny dunsparce lol
