6g44FTp.png Iris Penrose

Iris is a cheerful and friendly woman who’s a delight to talk to - as long as you have good intentions. Those who don’t quickly find she has an almost supernatural instinct for that sort of thing, zero tolerance for bullshit, and the ability to punch clean through a brick wall. Though technically a private investigator, her strict standards for clients means she’s rarely actually on a job, and is usually out in the town doing errands for the townsfolk or rescuing cats from trees or whatnot. The community loves her.

She worries endlessly about her sibling and visits them at the Academy a few times a week, to make sure they don’t forget to eat and die. Unlike them she can actually do magic, so she helps them out with their experiments from time to time - when their spells are uncomplicated enough for a mere human to cast, anyway.

Personality

warm • intuitive • (over)protective

Iris is an empathetic and extroverted person with a genuine interest in other people's stories. She'll listen to you ramble about inconsequential garbage for hours if it's what you're interested in, and remember it long enough to send you an appropriate birthday gift months later. She rarely shares her own story, though. She doesn't like to burden others with her emotional baggage, and she isn't comfortable revealing it before Aster is ready anyway.

She's scarily intuitive when it comes to people; she'll form an impression of someone's intentions within three sentences of conversation, and it's almost always right. In sharp contrast to her usual cheery attitude, she will not suffer malice or subterfuge - someone looking for trouble will be asked politely but coldly to leave, and if they refuse she's not above using force. This instinct has helped greatly with her investigations, but also significantly reduced the number of her jobs. It's hard to make it as a PI if you only work for reputable people.

Loss hits Iris particularly hard, and after everything she's been through she's painfully aware of it. She doesn't often get invested in people beyond casual friendship, but once she does she clings to them with everything she's got. For the past eight years that focus has been on her sibling. Her usual levelheaded approach goes completely out the window when Aster is in danger; if they fell off a cliff she would jump after them and then figure out what to do on the way down.

Design Notes

  • tall (200cm-ish?) and broad-shouldered. muscular. cuts an imposing silhouette.
  • the only character in this setting who isn't a fashion disaster. prefers classy and formal stuff, with gold accents
  • pretty much always smiling
  • makes an appropriate amount of eye contact during conversations. I'm too autistic to know what that is
  • relaxed posture. slouches a little bit so you don't have to look up quite as far, until she Gets Serious

Story

Iris was pretty shy when she was young, and never really managed to make friends with the neighbourhood kids. So when her only sibling and best friend Aster left their hometown to make better use of their talents in some far-off research facility, she was disappointed, but resolved to support their endeavors and saw them off with her best smile. She couldn’t visit - the location of the research facility was top secret - but Aster sent her letters every week. At first they were all enthusiastic anecdotes and questions about home, but soon they became short and tired, then downright desperate, until one day they just stopped coming altogether.

Iris is usually a pretty laid-back person, but when she makes a decision, there is nothing in the universe that can change her mind or stop her. A month after the last letter, she made the first of these decisions: she was going to find her sibling and bring them back home.

Over a year of travelling, through a combination of hard work and her newfound natural talent for investigating, she found that Aster had been illegally recruited by the Orlisian government to build their war machines. She reached the facility too late to prevent them from being deployed, but at least she saved Aster, and she would go to any lengths necessary to make sure they stay safe.

Trivia

  • Annie and Iris were made as part of that "mash all your favourite characters into one oc" meme. Some of the characters on her board include: Athena Cykes (Ace Attorney), Lynne (Ghost Trick), Lup (TAZ: Balance), Fern (Awful Hospital), etc.
  • The flower theme naming is intentional in-universe; the Penrose siblings are both trans and coordinated names with each other. They're dorks.

Relationships

Aster • baby sibling

There's nothing in the world Iris wouldn't do for Aster. She's immensely proud of everything they've accomplished and tries her best to respect their wishes for independence, though even after eight years that initial overprotective instinct is hard to overcome. She knows Aster gets a little embarrassed at her antics sometimes, but doesn't every little sibling?
