Hattie Moonstone is a character on Toyhouse. She is an original character of mine - a young witch with a lot of attitude that practices dimensional and elemental magic.

Appearance

Hattie is a young witch with pale, grey-ish skin, black eyes, long bottom eyelashes, and hair styled into a black bob cut.

She wears a big pointed witch’s hat with a crown that leans backwards, a rockabilly dress with a dark grey top and a light grey skirt, a bow tied around her waist with a red diamond cut gem in the middle, a black leather jacket with a red zig zag pattern on its back, dark gray tights, and black pumps.

She wears a ring on her right ring finger with a big red gem that has a four pointed star in its middle.

Personality

Hattie has a pessimistic, sarcastic persona sometimes, and can be rather rude and aloof, often seeming to have a “doom-and-gloom” mentality. She tends to have trouble thinking positively due to her personally feeling so held back and repressed at her hometown.

She always seems to have a hard time trying to understand when someone is concerned with her or trying to protect her, and always regards it as them simply "holding her back". Hattie can never really put herself in another person's shoes, and has trouble seeing and understanding things from their perspective, especially when it comes to other people's views of herself.

Hattie is sometimes hyperactive and often immature, she can be very impatient and often rushes headfirst into things. She has a brash and impulsive attitude, and thinks more often with her heart than her brain. She holds grudges over seemingly minor and sometimes silly things and can tend to be dramatic. She has some self-destructive tendencies that often come from a low self regard and opinion of herself.

Hattie has very low self esteem, believing that there's something wrong with her or that she's “broken” and unable to be fixed. She adopted her rude and rebellious tendencies as a bit of a coping mechanism and to try and cover up her insecurities. She’s also adopted weird habits and behaviors as a part of her attempts to distract herself from herself, like scaring others and making up strange phrases that don’t really make sense (think something like “well that’s just how the worm crumbles!” specific phrase I know. but she seriously would say something like that).

Background

OVERVIEW

Harriet 'Hattie' Beatrix Moonstone comes from the sleepy fantasy town of White Torch Cove, a town inhabited by witches, wizards, and magical creatures. Generally not a lot happens in White Torch Cove, but any wild events that do happen are caused by Hattie and her wild experiments in magic. Much to the dismay of the town and especially her family, Hattie is a bit of a wildcard with magic, practicing anything she comes across.

Hattie's family has rather strict views about what magic is and isn't considered 'appropriate' to learn and practice, and ever since she was a child she's sought out to challenge those views and learn as many different kinds of magic that she can. Even some less favorable kinds.

Hattie wants to be a 'jack of all trades' kind of witch, but being that she's still only a young adult, fresh out of school, she hasn't completely honed in her powers yet. Where most witches in this case would use a wand, Hattie wears a ring on her right finger to help control her powers. She is particularly drawn to elemental magic and dimensional magic and has practiced both frequently, but still doesn't have the best control over them, not only because of how young she is, but also because of the general instability of these kinds of magic.

Hattie often activates her magic in random, energetic bursts as either the result of extreme emotion or overexertion. These energetic bursts of magic could manifest in her accidentally opening portals to other dimensions or engulfing herself and her environment in the elements. And because Hattie has a quick temper that you could activate at the drop of a hat, this tends to happen often.

HISTORY

In her family ancestry, going back, Hattie and her family descend from vampires, coming from one point in history where one of her female ancestors married and had children with a vampire. Because of this, Hattie has a few vampiric traits, though she herself is not biologically a vampire. She has small fangs, pale almost-dead looking skin, and she's sensitive to the sun (she won't die in sunlight, but she sunburns easily and heavy exposure to sunlight makes her feel nauseous). And though not immortal, Hattie and her family have amazingly long life expectancy.

Hattie's father has been absent for most of her life, having gone on a quest for bounty when she was rather little and still yet to return nearly 15 years later. The only people who have been around to care for her are her condescending older sister Dimanche, her older cousin Remy, and her overprotective mother Étoile. Though Hattie got very little time with her dad in her life, she's still rather attached to him, feeling lost without him around. Her father was often called "The Greatest Warlock of the Modern Era", and she aspires to be just as, if not more powerful than him.

Growing up, Hattie was sheltered, protected, and controlled by her mother after her father disappeared. Her mother has always been most discouraging of “dangerous” forms of magic and would watch Hattie closely whenever she practiced spells. Hattie would be permitted little time outside so that she couldn’t get lost, and her mother would closely guide her on the way to school. Though her mother did all this out of love and an effort to prevent Hattie from disappearing like her father, Hattie grew to resent her and rebel against her. She always believed her mother controlled her due to a low opinion of her.

Because of her sheltered upbringing and her eccentric behavior, Hattie was often bullied and excluded by her peers in school, and her classmates, even now as adults, still make fun of her. She made few friends among her peers in school, and the few friends she has made, she’s grown distant from out of a fear they’ll come to dislike her eventually. In school, she became bitter rivals with a fellow student named Noreen “Norie” Sunstone who would always single out Hattie and copy her and outdo her in her work. Though there was little resemblance and no relation between them, Hattie would often call Norie her “evil twin”.

PRESENT

Fed up with life in her hometown, Hattie sought to run away from White Torch Cove. To where, she wasn’t sure, but she knew ultimately she wanted to leave, and nothing beyond that. She packed her things and set off to leave, but got stuck in a confrontation with Oakley and her other bullies on her way out. As they berated her, in a fit of rage, Hattie started yelling back at them, building up to a point where she accidentally activated her magic and opened up a portal behind her with enough force that it sent the others flying back. She didn’t notice what she had done at first until the portal sucked her and her things in with it and sent her to another world.

Hattie ended up in a dying city that many in regions around it only know as "The City", as its name has been lost to time and decay from the elements of nature. Lost without a means to get back home, it would be in The City where Hattie would eventually meet Dexter and Vincent, who despite her reluctance, would become her new best friends, Dexter particularly trying to workshop ways Hattie could return back home.

However… would Hattie ever want to go back home…? Would she be able to reconcile with herself and her history before she does?

Abilities

  • Dimensional magic - Ability to magically conjure portals to different dimensions and travel on planes outside of reality. Also includes the ability to teleport from one place to another. Very advanced and volatile magic that Hattie has very poor control over and mastering of.
  • Fire elemental magic - Magical control of heat and fire, and the ability to conjure fire from nothing. Her favorite form of elemental magic, and the form of magic she has the best control over.
  • Nature elemental magic - Magical control of plant life, and the ability to conjure plant life from nothing. Also includes the ability to heal one’s self.
  • Water elemental magic - Magical control of bodies and water, and the ability to conjure water from nothing.
    • Also includes Ice elemental magic and magical control of snow and cold temperature, because y’know. Ice is just frozen water.
  • Electric elemental magic - Magical control of lightning and electricity, and the ability to conjure lightning from nothing.

Despite her practicing elemental magic, Hattie isn't immune to the elements themselves. She can get burned, frozen/frostbite, electrocuted, and she cannot breathe underwater, being capable of drowning. However, because of her frequent practice of elemental magic and some pain tolerance, she has developed a sort of resistance to damage that the elements can do. She doesn't feel much pained when burned or electrocuted, can recover easily from being in harsh cold, and she can hold her breath for a long time underwater. She's also able to heal herself using plant-based magic, but often opts not to unless she's desperate or close to death, as she feels like pain induced by the elements toughens her up more and makes her strong.

  • Glitch Witch - Caused by overuse of dimensional magic.
  • Burned Witch - Caused by overuse of fire elemental magic.
  • Buried Witch - Caused by overuse of nature elemental magic.
  • Drowned Witch - Caused by overuse of water elemental magic.
  • Plug Witch - Caused by overuse of electrical elemental magic.

Because Hattie is a young witch that hasn't learned proper ways to control and contain her magic yet, as well as practicing very volatile forms of magic that are hard on a witch's body, her form can change from overuse of certain types of magic. On the upside: These forms are not permanent and can be reverted quickly with a counterspell. Downside: Hattie is incredibly dangerous in each of these forms and unable to be properly communicated with, as her mind has gone and she's sent into a very primal rage.

  • Magical Ring - Golden ring with a powerful gem in its middle. Her ring helps her control her magic and keeps it from consuming her entire body.
  • Gun - Gun. She likes to conjure it out of thin air with magic. Hattie likes guns.

Trivia

  • Hattie was originally conceived as the main protagonist of an idea I had for an RPG which I conceptually titled “Little Witch in the Big City”, with key inspirations from Deltarune, Pokemon, OneShot, and OFF. The initial idea behind Hattie was that she would be a defiant protagonist, breaking the fourth wall and communicating with the player like Niko from Oneshot, but disobeying the player and their inputs and objecting to the idea of being controlled by an outside force. Due to her rebellious nature often skewing her more to evil or criminal actions, the idea would have been for the player to try and steer her in the right direction and motivate her to do good things and make friends.
  • Hattie isn't a professional, but she is a skilled cook and she loves making and eating spicy food. So much so, that people tend to be overwhelmed by how hot her cooking is. She can't normally eat other people's cooking without having hot spices, seasonings or hot sauce on hand to doctor her meal.
  • Hattie is ambidextrous. She is naturally right-handed, but has practiced greatly to mainly write with her left hand out of a fear that friction against the ring on her right hand could result in a magic-related accident.
  • Hattie has two cats, an orange tabby named Spooky and a black cat named Candy.
  • I have a plush of Hattie that I got made from Budsies :3
