SONG: "Five Colours In Her Hair" - McFly

MISC.

  • Believes she and Silas have the same face and puts makeup on him to use him like a mirror
  • Also uses Silas as a mannequin for her new outfits. It seems weird, but he doesn’t mind playing dress up (and enjoys being pampered)
  • Can’t ever remember anyone’s names and comes up with placeholder nicknames instead
  • Will always be willing to try the craziest, newest foods
  • One day she’s a tomboy, next day she’s a girly girl. There’s no middle ground, just extremes
  • Dyes her hair a different color each year
  • Has been taking dance classes since she was 3 and when not at school or band practice, she’s usually with her dance team

DESIGN NOTES

  • Always makes sure her eye shadow matches her hair
  • Tends to wear clothes to that show a lot skin
  • Despite varying accessories in other areas, she always wears the same long, gold earrings. They’re from Skye’s mom
  • While her lip piercing is obvious, she also has a tongue and belly button piercing

BIO NOTES

Ambrosia seems to never stop moving. Despite joining the band before Silas and having a closer bond with Talon and Nile, she’s all over the place. Not only is she already in college, but she’s juggling internships, a part-time job, dance, her major, and dealing with her family. Although she’s an only child, she’s lived near countless cousins and classmates.

Though the memories are fuzzy, her best friend until she was 3 was a boy named Skye. Their mothers were friends, so they were close before they could even crawl. Their mothers placed them in dances when they were 2, so they always saw each other: During school, after school, in extracurriculars–you name it. Their mothers had huge imaginations and dreamed of them eventually going to prom together, joined at the hip, until Skye and her father died in a car accident.

While Ambrosia doesn’t remember much from that age, she still knows she lost her best friend, even though it was decades ago. Everyone was anticipating the accident taking a mental toll on Amber, and up until age 5, she only lived with her parents until her grandparents and aunt from her mother’s side moved into their house. They figured the company would help, but eventually, they forgot their reason for crowding the house in the first place.

While she’s an extrovert and loves her family, she often can’t take the noise and constant commotion. She often comes home to more relatives in her house than when she left originally, even if they’re only visiting.

While everyone has been to Silas or Nile’s house, Ambrosia never lets anyone visit. She hasn’t even told her bandmates her address. Her entire family is artsy in one way or another, and though it’s sweet, she can’t stand her relatives babying her and fawning over her musical abilities anymore. While she doesn’t keep any secrets, they’re not as "in the know" as they could be. But despite her countless responsibilities and rapidly changing environments, she’s always at band practice on time and always arrives overly prepared.

BAND INFO

Grilled Rice was originally formed by Nile and Talon in their junior year of high school. At first, they only played instrumentals despite Nile’s notebooks of potential song lyrics. Most of their gigs took place at a small coffeehouse, and Amber, one of the employees, eventually joined them as their lead singer a few months after the band originated. After about a year of playing together, Talon said they were tired of the drums and wanted to put their guitar lessons to use, but no one could take their place.

Nile went on the search for a potential candidate in their senior year and found Silas in the band room after school. The four have been joined at the hip ever since, although Amber was already in college. Nile and Talon eventually got into Wilmington University (Springfield), and after graduating high school, Silas enrolled at DCAD (Delaware College of Art and Design), where Amber is.

FYI: The band members are around ages 40 or 50 present-day! However, their primary story takes place during the 80s and 90s, so you'll always see them drawn as kids or young adults. More notes will be added to this section in due-time.

DISCOGRAPHY

GRILLED RICE

Flip

1992

Given that this was the first album, it was in the works for a while. Though Nile and Talon were the only members at the time, everyone still wanted it in the overall discography. There are 7 songs, and while most are instrumental, those with words are sung by Nile. Kyle, Nile’s older brother, took the photo one afternoon. They were still in high school, hence Nile’s long hair and overabundance of acne and Talon’s more feminine presentation.

BAD RECEPTION

Flip

1993

Unbeknownst to most, this is their most disorganized album. Between Silas being a new recruit, Talon and Nile prioritizing college applications and graduation requirements, and Ambrosia trying to rework some of their older, unreleased songs, rehearsals were often a mess. Some months were flawless, whereas others were touch-and-go, only to find that not stressing about production led to a better product.

There are 10 tracks, most of which are chill, and unlike their other albums, the songs go together. It was the single instance where someone wrote the first song, and everyone else tried to write something similar. While Ambrosia wrote most of the songs, Silas helped name many. Kyle took the photo at Dewey Beach, where he normally resides, and the dress code was a waistcoat with unrelated bottoms of your choice.

IN THE MEANTIME

Flip

1995

Most fans feel this is where they perfected their sound hence this being the most popular album. It took about a year to complete, but the upbeat nature and Silas singing solo throughout the last track boosted popularity. Silas usually hid in the back playing drums, and since he’s the youngest face and newest edition, people loved seeing him centerstage.

He performed the same song at his high school when his wings appeared (which likely boosted ratings since fans got clips or photos of the transformation). It was technically a demo, likely to take place on a future album, but they added it as a bonus, making the track count 11 instead of 10. "Plastic-Covered Couches" is the only slow song.

ZERO BUYOANCY

Flip

1996

Nile practices many original songs on his own with themes he doesn’t want to force others to work around, such as his ex-boyfriends, family problems, or unattainable love interests (Silas). His vent lyrics are written in a way that’s hard to grasp the overall issue, but when the members realized he was writing on the side, they recommended he make his first solo album. Even if he didn’t want them in his business, they didn’t want his talents to go unnoticed.

He was reluctant until Silas happened to catch him singing after their rehearsals ended and thought everyone had left the band room. Despite his embarrassment, he was flattered by his friend’s compliments and figured he might as well release some. Nile usually merges vocals with Ambrosia, so people loved hearing him by himself.

And though the cover photo seems like it’s trying to be edgy, Nile was black-out drunk, and yes, his glasses were actually recently broken. He and the others were invited to a party, and Talon and Silas found him in the bathtub at the end of the night. Out of the 14 songs, half are acoustic, and all are surprisingly vulgar. Despite being released in 1996, many songs are refined drafts of old songs dating back to 1992.

Songs in orange are directed at Silas, but Nile is really the only one who knows...since he wrote them and all. They either allude towards him possibly being an angel, or just the massive crush Nile has on him. Sometimes both.

THE PROMENADE

Flip

1997

Silas had a burst of determination and decided that he’d finally confess to Amber during his senior year, and the easiest way would be asking her to be his prom date. While she was happy to join him, she didn’t get the subtext, and Silas quickly got embarrassed, freaked out, and decided to invite the rest of their friends too. Since the rest of the band members were under 21 and had previously attended the school, getting tickets was effortless.

While making it a group outing was a coverup, Silas’ classmates got the drift: He and Amber were the only ones in the group with corsages and matching outfits. Nonetheless, Silas basks in the joy of being able to dance with his crush for 4 hours, even if he never confessed. The 9 songs sound like a mixture of 80s disco and rock. Most reference the night itself, although many were afterthoughts since Silas attended prom in 1996.

Nile and Talon were the last kids on the dancefloor (1), 15 minutes in and one of Silas’ classmates was already drunk (2), some schnapps was secretly passed around during the dance, and was found under a table at the end of the night (3), there was only one planned slow dance so everyone started randomly slow dance to the upbeat songs since the DJ was oblivious (5), Talon brought hundreds of glow sticks and shared them with Silas’ graduating class (6), and since Silas was graduating in a few weeks, they declared it was the end of an era now that all, including him, were adults (9).
