About
CW: Shipwreck, Piracy, Death
When Pythios was a child, there was still hope that one day the Lanier Islands might recover to their full glory, or at least to kinda sorta good again. As he grew older, these hopes diminished very quickly, and by the time he was a young man it was an idea dismissed as a pipe dream. As such, he grew up incredibly mistrustful, time and time again seeing good deeds rewarded with nothing but deception and betrayal. By the time he was grown, Pyth viewed most everyone he met with venom and distrust. For a time, he made his living doing what many folks from his hometown did - piracy.
For some time, Pyth worked his way through the ranks on a pirate ship, quickly proving himself invaluable thanks to his quick wit and prepared nature. However, working on a pirate vessel had many consequences. One was becoming keenly aware of how easily any tame situation could quickly become dangerous. The other was a concept which would haunt Pyth for the rest of his life - teamwork. Despite joining the crew with a very “me and mine” mentality, Pythios came to deeply value being part of a team, and working to cover each other’s backs. Worse still, he began to trust his teammates. Sadly, a wayward storm would take down their beautiful ship, and the crew which once manned her would scatter to the four winds rather than stay together as regular run of the mill bandits, leaving Pythios lost and alone once again.
Pyth had every intention of returning to being a criminal. He just didn’t know the most profitable way to do it, yet. For a time he wandered aimlessly, and along the way found himself helping people left and right - mostly trusting fools who didn’t realize the trouble they were getting themselves into. Unwittingly, Pyth ended up making a good number of friends this way; Pokémon who appreciated his blunt demeanor and honesty, as well as his constant aid. But, abandoned by his crew, Pyth was very slow to consider trusting anyone again. Until he met Benipé.
It was Benipés idea to turn to rescue work. After Pyth saved them from a blizzard they were stranded in, the beldum started following the Goomy relentlessly, pestering him to teach them what he knew of survival and adapting to circumstances quickly. It was Benipés constant encouragement and prodding which eventually prompted Pyth to seriously consider rescue work. Despite his reluctance to trust anyone, Pyth found that he couldn’t shake off Benipé as he had with many others, and eventually came to accept their constant presence. These days, Pyth values their opinion tremendously, and will often consult Benipé before trying anything risky.
