Profile

Other Names: "Dead Man's Hand" (mob nickname), "Eightses" (alternate nickname, portmanteau of "eights" and "aces," in reference to the aforementioned hand)

Species: Ogre-faced spider (Deinopis subrufa)

Birthday: December 27

Gender: Nonbinary

Pronouns: they/them, she/her

Occupation: Librarian, criminal (shhhhh)

Physical Description

  • Tall, twiggy
  • Very long, skinny limbs
    • Sometimes holds their top two pairs of arms together like one pair of arms
  • Holds abdomen upturned
  • Has eight eyes - four on the front (two of which are enormous) and two on each side of their head
    • As with other spiders, they don't have eyelids, so they're incapable of blinking
    • Sometimes you can see a faint light reflected in the centers of their largest eyes
  • Tends to wear sweaters
  • Stands unnaturally still
  • Moves swiftly and silently
  • Often found on ceilings and walls, or crammed into a corner standing perfectly straight and perfectly still
  • Wears specialized dark goggles in bright conditions

Personality

  • Quiet, reclusive, never talks if they can help it (usually communicates via sign language)
  • Keeps to themselves, very solitary, doesn't want much companionship (save for Argine, and, to a lesser extent, their other arachnid associates)
  • Afflicted with an anxiety disorder, naturally nervous

Likes

  • Argine
    • Her poise, her elegance, how absolutely regal she is
    • Her understanding and unwavering support and they're just a mess what did they do to deserve her
    • The sense of security they feel when they're held in her arms
  • Dim or dark light conditions
  • Reading
    • Reads a lot of true stories of horrendous crimes - it makes them paranoid, but they can't seem to stop reading
      • Argine gently reminds them that some of the things they've done together could probably make up some of those books, so really Ivey has nothing to worry about
  • The volunteers they work with at the library
    • Jeist in particular is fun - the two of them work together to convert bad romance novels into satirical comics, where they highlight the terrible dialogue/characterization/plot/etc. by swapping the protagonist's and love interest's genders

Dislikes

  • Light (pain)
  • Loudness
  • Large amounts of people
  • Having to talk to people

Personal Info

  • Married to Argine, absolutely adores her
  • Naturally intimidating; most people feel a creeping sense of dread or unease which grows stronger the longer they make eye contact with Ivey
  • Has insane night vision, but can't turn it off
    • Like other spiders, Ivey doesn't have eyelids or irises, so their eyes are always exposed to the full force of whatever light is present
      • Their eyesight comes back within the next night if damaged, but getting their eyes burned to bits is still immensely painful, so Ivey abhors light and works in darkness when they can
  • Plucks out the hairs on their arms when stressed
  • Spins small webs, which they hold with their four upper arms
    • The webs aren't sticky; the texture is more woolly and Velcro-like
    • When participating in less than legal behavior, they use the webs to incapacitate and capture people
      • They typically hide on the ceiling of a darkened corridor or room and pounce on enemies that approach unknowingly
      • If hiding isn't an option, they've also been known to tackle enemies with web outstretched to entangle them
        • The sight of a nearly eight foot tall spider with black voids for eyes sprinting at you to grab you with a web is often a frightening enough sight that their enemies can't react before Ivey's on top of them
  • Surprisingly strong considering how twiggy they appear
  • Other members of their, ahem, "circle of friends:"
Brief Backstory
  • Was nonverbal for most of their adult life; communicated entirely by signing
  • After Ivey and Argine got engaged, Ivey became motivated to undergo speech therapy so they could surprise Argine by actually saying "I do"
  • They went further with the speech therapy than they initially planned, and now they can talk (albeit slowly and with odd enunciation)

Trivia

  • Can't actually move their eyes (again, no irises to restrict field of vision); has to turn their head in order to look at something with a particular pair of eyes
