Overview

Jaehyun Baek is the younger brother and secondborn son of the current Baek generation. Growing up in the comfort of a well established family has not tempered Jaehyun’s drive or ambition despite the shadow of his accomplished elder brother’s achievements. He has some innate talent for aura combat but struggles internally with wanting to follow in Taejun’s footsteps, a task he believes to be impossible. Instead he puts on a broody, rebellious front which causes his brother to look upon him with righteous disappointment. This has created a negative feedback loop where the more his brother pushes him to work harder and achieve more, the more Jaehyun pushes back and keeps himself in mediocrity.

Despite the angst of his brotherly conflict, Jaehyun is quite free spirited and enjoys thrill seeking. He enjoys both the adrenaline of dangerous experiences (such as car racing) and his brother’s resulting migraine after. Though he tries to look cool, Jae is actually very naive and his cool front has the durability of thin rice paper. Surprisingly, his emotional response to things is actually tempered compared to his brother, but unlike Taejun, he easily lets them show, causing others to mistakenly perceive Jae as the more emotional of the two.

As the secondborn son in the most recent generation of the Baek family, Jaehyun grew up alongside other prominent Alliance families. Like other traditional Alliance families, he was homeschooled, and therefore has a certain naivety compared to his peers.

Unlike most of the children of the more traditional Alliance families, Jaehyun tends to be a little more free spirited and outgoing. He makes friends easily due to his easy-going and unperturbed demeanor. Jaehyun is very empathetic towards others, even if he doesn't understand why they are feeling the way they are.

Jaehyun struggles to distinguish himself in a generation of exceptionally talented individuals. His lack of drive and ambition has put him at odds with his brother and with some of his once childhood friends, particularly Hisui Zhiui, who berates him for his lack of drive and ambition. Jaehyun is not without self discipline, however, growing up in the shadow of his elder brother has made him withdrawn and reluctant to push himself.

Nothing gets Jae going quite like an adrenaline shock. Thrills and danger bring out the reckless side of him that usually lays latent under his strict upbringing. It's during these times that Jae feels the happiest and most alive. However, he very easily loses control when his adrenaline is surging, and he often makes stupid decisions.

BAEK HYEOLTONG

The Baek family joined Alliance 0 during the Gwangmu Reform in 1892. Before the Gwangmu era, the family were unestablished commoners of no importance and no surname, and there is very little record of earlier generations. The Baek family has a generations-long relationship with the Akechi and Zhihui families after establishing good camaraderie during their first long joint assignment undermining the Japanese Empire in the early 1900s.

The Baek Bloodline is said to be duty bound to carry out the peacekeeping will of the Inmyeonjo, whose blessing was given to the first Baek agent for his role in pacifying the East Asian conflict in WWII. They bear its symbol as their family crest. The Inmyeonjo has not been seen since the end of WWII and each generation of the Baek Bloodline since its last appearance gains a stronger force of will and sense of duty to return the world to stability.

The less established Baek family does not have as prominent a lineage as the Akechis and the Zhihuis. Due to their patron spirit, the Baeks are generally conflict averse, and as such do not have a tendancy to compete or contest for higher ranking positions in the Alliance. Despite their reticence for leadership, the Baeks have remained as dedicated and dependable members of the Alliance.

The Baeks are aura specialists. Their family's martial preference is a taekwondo adjacent technique, but there is no established Baek Clan styled taekwondo, as the Baek agents tend to modify and adapt their individual styles depending on their experiences. Generally, however, every Baek specializes in one or two melee weapons, supplemented by light bows for the rare ranged engagement. There are no records of a Baek ever manifesting a colored aura. Taejun Baek is the first of the Baek Bloodline to secure a familiar contract.

Aura Manipulation

Jaehyun is a proficient aura user, having been trained in the usage of such since a young age. He manifested his aura early on, like his brother, however, his parents were too eager to have him follow in the footsteps of his prodigy elder brother. They pushed Jaehyun too far too fast, and Jae became somewhat nervous about using aura, particularly offensively.

His primary use of aura is casting aura weaponry. Jae favors a chained kama or meteor hammer for mid to close ranged attacks, but occasionally will cast a light bow to give himself more range.

Recently, Jae has been learning to use aura to enhance his innate speed and flow to hit harder and chain his martial arts combinations more seamlessly.

Taekwondo

The Baek family practices a form of taekwondo that heavily emphasises kickwork combinations and palm strikes. It is not refined enough to be considered its own school of discipline, as each generation of Baek agent has their own preferences built from their combat experiences.

Jaehyun trains in taekwondo mixed martial arts extensive with his family, particularly his brother, Taejun. He is an excellent defensive fighter. He is very good at countering his opponents kicks. Jae uses aura to enhance the speed of his combinations, making him a formidably agile fighter.

Will of the Inmyeonjo

The Baek family is favored by the Inmyeonjo, the woman faced legendary bird that only appears as a herald of peaceful times. They are duty-bound to fight evil and bring peace to the land, and the Inmyeonjo's blessing gives the Baek family an indominatable willpower against overwhelming odds. They recover quickly from difficult experiences and do not easily become poisoned with internal conflict./p>

All the direct descendants of Baek Gyerin carry the blessing of Inmyeonjo and have a strong force of will, which compounds with every generation since the Inmyeonjo's last appearance. It has been six generations since the Inmyeonjo's last appearance.

HISTORY///

Jaehyun is the younger of the two Baek brothers, being five years younger than his brother Taejun. Growing up, Jaehyun was heavily exposed to his family's approval of his brother's accomplishments. He admired his brother for being a good role model as their family's pride and joy.

Like most of the traditional Alliance families, the Baeks prefer to privately tutor their children. But Jaehyun did not grow up isolatd. Jaehyun was raised amongst the Alliance families. The Baeks are particularly close to the Akechis and the Zhihuis, and Jaehyun has been childhood friends with several prominent Alliance members, such as Hisui Zhihui, Jingyi Zhihui, and Sato Akechi. He was generally the troublemaker of the bunch.

Like his brother, Jae initially showed innate talent and promise. He manifested his aura at an early age, which delighted his parents. His parents were eager to push him to be just as good as Taejun. Initially, Jae looked like he was going to become just as much of a prodigy as Taejun was, however, his training was pushed too fast. There was a bad falling out, which shocked him and scared him, causing a block on his internal force of will and stunting his aura development.

His parents were overly sympathetic in the aftermath. They regretted that they had pushed Jaehyun too hard, and tried to make up for it by being overly encouraging, even when Jae was putting in minimal effort. For some years he coasted by and settled into the mindset that he simply wasn't as good as everyone else. His older brother Taejun, who by this point, was starting to make somewhat of a name for himself, was disappointed that Jaehyun had settled into complacency.

The two brothers are often at odds. Taejun has become quite critical of Jaehyun. Taejun firmly believes that Jaehyun has excellent potential that is being wasted by his poor attitude. Though Jaehyun puts out the facade that he doesn't care about his progression, internally he is conflicted because he does want to be as strong as Taejun, he just doesn't believe he can do it.

When he was 18, Jaehyun was initiated into the Alliance officially. He is a capable agent but has not distinguished himself by achieving a higher ranking.

[ . . . ]

DASEOT CASE [SHANGHAI] - Jaehyun was teamed up with Miles Russell and Alex Valentino to investigate a larceny scene believed to be carried out by cyberpcriminal Daseot. The trio were able to backtrace Daseot's IP to a cybercafe. After investigating several cybercafes in the city, the team encountered a suspect matching Daseot's description, who fled the cybercafe as the team was investigating it. The team pursued and engaged the target. Jaehyun suffered major injuries after being forced off a rooftop. Miles pursued the suspect to a high speed rail station but lost the suspect after he tossed a decoy replica of the stolen tech at Miles.

Though the investigation was ultimately a failure, Jaehyun was able to identify that Daseot utilized a specialised form of taekwondo only practiced by the Myung Clan. Followup investigation carried out by Dispatch agent Deiji Kim was able to confirm the identity of Daseot as Jiyoo Myung. She was also able to determine that Daseot had an accomplice, which had duped the team during their mission.

DASEOT CASE [MILAN] - After Daseot's face was profiled, the Alliance were able to track Daseot down to Milan, Italy, where he temporarily made a stop and checked into a hotel. Not wanting to miss this opportunity to apprehend Daseot before he could carry out his next heist, Taejun sent Miles, Jaehyun, Alex, and Zain to Milan to survey and ambush him. On that mission, the team also found that Daseot's unknown accomplice had travelled with him. Though the two were able to slip past the initial ambush, the Alliance team pursued them and were able to subdue the criminal pair, bringing them to custody once and for all.

MIST DRAGON CASE [HANGZHOU] - Jiyoo Myung, formerly incarcerated, was given the opportunity to aid the Alliance on a mission to apprehend the Mist Dragon. Jiyoo, Jeongmin Kang, and Jaehyun Baek were sent to Hangzhou to stake out an event showcasing an artifact believed to be the legendary Zhang Zhiya's sword. Though Jiyoo was only supposed to have supportive role during the mission, ultimately he was instrumental in stopping the Mist Dragon's escape after she initially overpowered Jaehyun and Jeongmin.

EMISSARY HQ RAID [CLASSIFIED] - The Emissary of Inferna HQ raid was a largescale operation targeting a major base of the Emissaries and a high interest target believed to be a head priestess of great power. Field agents were assigned into one of four entry squads, with Jun Akechi heading a fifth specialty strike team focused exclusively on intercepting the head priestess. Jaehyun Baek was assigned to Caroline Russell's West Squad.

In the collapse, Jaehyun was able to find Caroline and Diego Mendez. They engaged demon Marquis Ronove in several encounters, and met up with Hisui Zhihui in the last of these encounters. Despite their damaged communications, they eventually regrouped with the rest of the teams in the final encounter with Ronove and Lilith's army.

KURENAI CASE [TOKYO] - Miles Russell, Caroline Russell, Analiese Edelgard, and Jaehyun Baek were assigned to infiltrate a high school that the serial killer vampire Kurenai was believed to be attending. They initially suspected an estranged student with a complicate past and history of altercations as their target, but Miles attracted the attention of the real Kurenai. She attempted to feed on Miles when he became separated from the group. He was able to fight her off but the team arrived too late to prevent her escape. Though the agents did not manage to apprehend Kurenai, they gained valuable insight of the vampire and her description.

Corren League Leader

Taejun, the older brother, has overshadowed Jaehyun all of his life. Their relationship can be strained at times. Taejun disapproves of Jaehyun's lack of drive, and Jaehyun finds Taejun overbearing and pretentious. Ultimately, the brothers still care deeply for each other, except they're not very good at showing it.

Scarlet Faction Leader

Jaehyun met Caroline at HQ. He admires and respects Caroline for solidly defeating Hisui, his childhod rival. He likes her friendliness and good-natured humor. Jae has started to develop a bit of a crush on her, but their budding friendship has been noticed by Hisui, who loathes Caroline.

Jade Faction Leader

Jaehyun and Hisui grew up together as close family friends. They used to be quite close as kids, but their friendship suffered after Jae's drive to succeed faltered. Hisui chased her ambition, leaving behind Jaehyun, which caused a rift in their friendship. Though Jae is still mournful of their lost friendship, Hisui's constant disapproval incites resentment and anger in Jae, and the two often find themselves arguing over small things.

Carmen League Leader

Like many others, Jaehyun looks up to Jun like an older sister, but unlike most of the other Alliance members, he did grow up with her. Jae is close enough to Jun to refer to her as "nuna" (sometimes Ju-unna, for fun). Jun empathizes with Jae's struggles of wanting to live up to Taejun, and often defends Jae to Taejun. She's the only one who can get Taejun to let up on Jae. Recently she's been secretly training him to better utilize his aura.

Crimson Faction Leader

Jaehyun worked with Miles on the Daseot case. Jae respects Miles's ability and wishes to be friends with him, but the aloof Crimson Faction Leader hasn't quite warmed up to Jae yet.

Technology Faction Champion

Camilla was asked to supervise Jaehyun's antics on the track after he got a car. Jae's enthusiasm for racing and tuning amused Camilla. Jae admires Camilla's expertise in this field, and has no qualms asking her for advice or tutelage. He hopes to become a good friend.

Cybercriminal

Though Jaehyun initially met Jiyoo with animosity on Jiyoo's first trial mission, he quickly became impressed with Jiyoo's prowess and his bots. Jiyoo was able to convince Jaehyun of his willingess to reform, and Jaehyun believes that Jiyoo has the potential to be a great agent. He was sympathetic to Jiyoo even after Taejun renounced Jiyoo once again, and has visited him in prison to check in on him.

Sorcery Faction

Zhongyu is another Alliance family brat that Jaehyun had the misfortune of growing up knowing. Zhongyu's unlikeable stuckupness and arrogance has always struck a nerve with Jaehyun. It seems that Zhongyu always has some nasty comment to make towards Jaehyun. Jae greatly dislikes the mouthy exorcist.
