Overview

Taejun Baek is the firstborn son of this generation of the Baek family. His ambition and dedication have propelled him to the top, and his efforts have been rewarded by him achieving the position of the Corren League Leader, the highest position the Baek family has ever held. Despite only having a common green aura, he is one of the strongest aura users in this generation as well as a formidable hand to hand combatant favoring the taekwondo style of martial arts. He is also the first of his lineage to contract with a familiar, the haetae.

The rare and picky haetae favors Taejun for his uncompromising sense of justice and a strict moral compass. Taejun is a high performing perfectionist who expects the same from those whom he commands, which has led much of the Corren Faction to fear his intolerance for failure and misbehavior. Though he has learned to keep a cool exterior, Taejun is very much ruled by his own emotions, and his closest friends can read him as easily as a book. The main emotion he lets show to others is his righteous fury. Taejun often has a commanding, unapproachable air about him that easily escalates into a powerfully oppressive wrath when provoked.

Taejun is infamous in the Corren League as a hardass leader who does not tolerate failure or disappointment. More than a few agents have had the harrowing experience of receiving a long-winded lecture from Taejun. Taejun spends much of his time analysing not only case files, but also the progress and abilities of his subordinates, and is unafraid to verbally express his disappointment if he determines that his subordinants are underperforming. He has a set of moral values that he abides by, which he expects others to follow as well.

Though Taejun tends to be grouchy, in most situations, he maintains a very proper and stiffly formal air. His cool and serious exterior often gives way to a righteous wrath when he is provoked. Taejun strikes hard and fast in both combat and debate. With his keen powers of observation, he has little difficulty or remorse striking at the most painful points in order to quickly shut down his opposition.

With such a ruthless demeanor, Taejun doesn't have many close friends, despite his leadership position. Taejun’s closest friend and confidant is Jun Akechi herself, having grown up with Jun as family friends. Jun is one of the few people in the world privy to all of Taejun’s thoughts, which he easily lets spill at their families’ regular tea ceremony gatherings. Though they are quite different in personality, he highly values her advice and wise words.

BAEK HYEOLTONG

The Baek family joined Alliance 0 during the Gwangmu Reform in 1892. Before the Gwangmu era, the family were unestablished commoners of no importance and no surname, and there is very little record of earlier generations. The Baek family has a generations-long relationship with the Akechi and Zhihui families after establishing good camaraderie during their first long joint assignment undermining the Japanese Empire in the early 1900s.

The Baek Bloodline is said to be duty bound to carry out the peacekeeping will of the Inmyeonjo, whose blessing was given to the first Baek agent for his role in pacifying the East Asian conflict in WWII. They bear its symbol as their family crest. The Inmyeonjo has not been seen since the end of WWII and each generation of the Baek Bloodline since its last appearance gains a stronger force of will and sense of duty to return the world to stability.

The less established Baek family does not have as prominent a lineage as the Akechis and the Zhihuis. Due to their patron spirit, the Baeks are generally conflict averse, and as such do not have a tendancy to compete or contest for higher ranking positions in the Alliance. Despite their reticence for leadership, the Baeks have remained as dedicated and dependable members of the Alliance.

he Baeks are aura specialists. Their family's martial preference is a taekwondo adjacent technique, but there is no established Baek Clan styled taekwondo, as the Baek agents tend to modify and adapt their individual styles depending on their experiences. Generally, however, every Baek specializes in one or two melee weapons, supplemented by light bows for the rare ranged engagement. There are no records of a Baek ever manifesting a colored aura. Taejun Baek is the first of the Baek Bloodline to secure a familiar contract.

Aura Mastery

Taejun is a master of aura manipulation. He manifested his aura at a young age, and quickly became quite obsessed with training his ability with it to the highest level. His mastery of aura allows him to cast oversized and overwhelmingly powerful weapons. In addition, he uses it enhance his speed and power in close ranged combat.

Taejun's primary usage of aura is creating aura weaponry. He is known to cast an exaggeratedly large scythe which he often uses to impale an enemy in a finishing blow, similar to the horn of the haetae he summons. Taejun is quite versatile with whatever weapon he uses, and adapts to the situation at hand with whatever tool is best.

Taekwondo

The Baek family practices a form of taekwondo that heavily emphasises kickwork combinations and palm strikes. It is not refined enough to be considered its own school of discipline, as each generation of Baek agent has their own preferences built from their combat experiences.

Taejun is a high level martial artist and extremely formidable close-quarters combatant, both armed and unarmed. His skill level is such that he can solidly outclass most Alliance agents unarmed even if they were to use aura against him. Taejun is a highly proactive fighter, pressuring his opponents relentlessly with endless combos.

Familiar: Haetae

Taejun is the first of the Baek bloodline to secure a familiar. The Haetae (also known as the Xiezhi in China) is a mythical leonine beast that pursues the fair and honest execution of justice, and despises wanton evil-doing. Legend says the Haetae appears more ferocious and terrifying to those with an evil heart. To the most vile of malefactors, the Haetae exacts justice upon them by impaling them with its horn or swallowing them whole.

Will of the Inmyeonjo

The Baek family is favored by the Inmyeonjo, the woman faced legendary bird that only appears as a herald of peaceful times. They are duty-bound to fight evil and bring peace to the land, and the Inmyeonjo's blessing gives the Baek family an indominatable willpower against overwhelming odds. They recover quickly from difficult experiences and do not easily become poisoned with internal conflict.

All the direct descendants of Baek Gyerin carry the blessing of Inmyeonjo and have a strong force of will, which compounds with every generation since the Inmyeonjo's last appearance. It has been six generations since the Inmyeonjo's last appearance.

Absolute Adjudication

With a sharp, logical mind and a perceptive eye for detail, Taejun excels as investigator. His naturally keen sense of justice is further enhanced with his high attunement to his familiar, the Haetae, which also makes him an excellent final judge on how the subject in custody should be punished for their perceived crimes.

He favors the Dispatch Division, and in particular, its investigators. He is well experienced at utilizing the talents and information gained by his side of the League and efficiently closes out investigations that are brought to his attention. Unfortunately for Taejun, he only has so much time on his hands...

HISTORY///

The Baek family rounds out the Trifecta of the three main long-running Asian families dedicated to the Alliance's cause. Taejun is the eldest of the current generation of Zhihui-Akechi-Baek. He and his close childhood friend Jun Akechi grew up like the elder siblings of the collective group of children. Like others of these long-running Alliance families, he was privately tutored and trained until the time that he became old enough to be officially initiated into the Alliance.

Taejun is closest to Jun; her parents, Ren and Chiharu, kept their daughters isolated for fear of retaliation from enemies, but the Baeks, including Taejun, were treated as family, and the two developed a close friendship from a young age. Early on, it was incredibly obvious that Jun possessed incredible innate talent, and the two eldeset siblings had a healthy rivalry of development growing up together.

Though Taejun manifested his aura earlier than Jun, when Jun's aura manifested, hers was a special, uniquely pink-colored aura. Her special aura gave her a particular edge against Taejun. This was initially frustrating for young Taejun, but he quickly got over his jealousy and it became a driving motivator for him to be just as strong as Jun despite his normal colored aura. Their unheated but passionate competitiveness with each other boosted each other in their younger training days, and both Jun and Taejun emerged as exceptionally talented and skilled agents.

[ . . . ]

Though Jun took on the role of the Carmen League Leader when she was 18 and initiated into the Alliance, Taejun was happy for the opportunity to undergo missions as a regular agent. He soon gained the rank of the Emerald Faction Leader, and remained in this position for some time, until he secured a familiar contract with the Haetae.

Not long after, Ren retired and passed down the mantle of the Corren League Leader to Taejun. Though he was initially quite hesitant to step up to such a lofty role, which no other Baek had ever aspired to, he settled in quite naturally as a Leader. Taejun has proven to be an effective and efficient leader, who demands the best performance out of the Corren League. However, it has been said that his main flaw is his tendancy to overfocus on a particular subject or agent, making him lose sight of the bigger scheme of global happenings.

Carmen League Leader

Jun and Taejun have known each other all their lives. Taejun considers Jun his closest friend. He highly values her wisdom and advice, and there are few secrets between the two. Growing up, the pair had a friendly competitiveness that helped them both become accomplished agents.

After Jun's aura was taken, he's become especially protective of her. Taejun dearly misses Jun's vivacity. Now that what he's taken as granted for so long is gone, Taejun is just starting to realize how much Jun really means to him.

Emerald Faction

Taejun, the older brother, has overshadowed Jaehyun all of his life. Their relationship can be strained at times. Taejun disapproves of Jaehyun's lack of drive, and Jaehyun finds Taejun overbearing and pretentious. Ultimately, the brothers still care deeply for each other, except they're not very good at showing it.

Dispatch Espionage

Vivenne is one of Taejun's most favored agents in the Dispatch division. He often calls upon her to carry out administrative tasks and to follow up on difficult investigations. They dated each other briefly before Taejun became the Corren League Leader, and broke it off amicably when they both decided to focus on their respective duties within the Alliance.

Dispatch Operative

Taejun and Sang are good friends, but have also been rivals for years. Though Taejun respects Sang's ability, he's not impressed with Sang's laidback and easygoing attitude. In the same vein, Sang thinks Taejun is quite uptight (he is right).

Dispatch Recon

Taejun has known Koga almost all his life. Taejun finds it difficult to imagine Alliance without Koga, who he respects as a former mentor and considers a good friend. Koga is fond of Taejun, having watched him (like many other Alliance family kids) grow up, but respects him completely for growing into the man he is now. Before Taejun became the Corren League Leader, Koga often ran missions with Taejun.

Dispatch Investigator

Taejun recruited Jeongmin into the Alliance after finding out that his familiar, the judicial haetae, favored Jeongmin. B Jeongmin is eager to prove himself to Taejun, whom he both admires and respects. After Jeongmin accepted a mission assigned to him by Jun while Taejun was taking a leave of absence, the detective has fallen out of favor with Taejun.

Sorcery Faction

Zhongyu and Taejun are childhood "friends", having grown up alongside each other as Alliance family friends. The two often butt heads due to Zhongyu's abrasive attitude and Taejun's intolerance for aggression; but ultimately Taejun is one of the few people Zhongyu truly respects. In battle, the two can be an extremely formidable pair when Taejun allows Zhongyu to borrow his qi.

Earth Faction Chief

Rei has known Taejun since they were kids. She has long admired Taejun's strength of will and ability, and he, along with Jun, is one of her inspirations for getting stronger. Taejun has a healthy respect for Rei's ability and determination. Rei is one of the few Alliance members who can keep up with Taejun's agility. When they were teens, Rei had a mild crush on Taejun, but was ultimately rejected by him. Though she's quickly got over it, Taejun is often a little tense around Rei.

Crimson Faction Leader

Taejun and Miles got off on the wrong foot. Taejun was wary of taking on Miles as the Crimson Faction Leader, and Miles disappointed him in both the duel with Chien Hong and in his second official mission where he let Daseot escape. Taejun has high expectations of Miles, and this causes him to be more strict and demanding of Miles, whose reaction is to withdraw and close himself off.

Person of Interest

Taejun's opinion of Selene has always been shaky. When Selene was still in the Alliance and 'friends' with Jun, he disapproved of her occasional hostile attitude towards her supposed friend. The two do have a similar sense of unrelenting justice, and both Selene and Taejun have a healthy sense of respect for the other's outlook and abilities. Since she left the Alliance, Taejun has gained an interest in what exactly Selene is up to...
