Backstory

Jasper Dvorkin-De Angelo is the second child of ICU nurse Dalia Dvorkin and failed architect Ricardo “Richie” De Angelo. Before them was their brother Caleb, and after was their sister Jordan. Shortly after Jordan was born, Ricardo left the family and remarried a wealthy woman in Columbia. Dalia had another short relationship that resulted in Jasper's final sibling, Caroline.

Growing up, the Dvorkin household luckily didn't hurt for money, thanks to the hefty child support the courts saddled Ricardo with, but it wasn't without struggles. Dalia was often busy with her job, and Caleb checked out early on, leaving Jasper with the responsibility of taking care of their sisters while their mother was gone. Luckliy, Jordan was intelligent and resourceful, meaning that the only one Jasper really had to worry about was Caroline. Jasper saw Caroline as someone who needed a lot of care and a lot of protecting, so they took it upon themselves to do so.

Shortly before their 18th birthday, Jasper discovered their powers. They were difficult to control and even more difficult to understand, but they never went to anyone else about it. They focused on school and family first, and then tried to decipher their powers on their own time. A few weeks after they turned 18, they would regret not figuring out their powers sooner. On a trip into San Francisco with Caroline, a nameless villain would attack. Jasper, with no understanding or control or their powers, would do their best to get Caroline and themselves to saftey. They would fail. Caroline would die, and it would change the course of their life forever. After the incident, their older brother Caleb would resent them, and their mother Dalia would fall into a major depressive episode, leaving Jasper alone and blaming themselves. Jasper spent the next few years at home, going to college for architecture. When they turned 23, their mother insisted they move to Silver City to go get their master's degree.

After moving to Silver City, Jasper would be caught up in a villain attack in the Downtown district where they would come face-to-face with the city's most famous hero, Magnum Opal. Magnum Opal saved them during the attack, which would inspire them to take on the monkier Photon and start their own vigilantism.

Current Life

Currently, Jasper attends the Rocosa Research Institute pursuing their Masters degrees in both Architecture and Urban Planning. They live in a singe-bedroom apartment well into the city, one that they wouldn't be able to afford without their estranged father's assitance. (They don't talk about how he helps them pay for their living situation, and they don't forgive him for abandoning their family.) They have an unstable and frankly probably unhealthy relationship with combination superhero and billionaire trust-fund adult Apollo Brighton, which is kept more or less a secret, which works for them for the most part. They don't think often about if they would like anything more serious, they're just too busy. They keep up with everyone in their family save for Caleb, who they only see on holidays, and on very hostile terms.

During their free time they work and train as the vigilante Photon. They exersize rigorously and train in several martial arts, this on top of actually being a hero and a student as well as being a in a relationship leaves them very little time to sleep or otherwise take care fo themselves. But they still manage to keep the other parts of their life in check. For now.

The Future

Eventually, Jasper and Apollo start a serious relationship. They're instrumental in the fight against Neo Dominus, but unfortunately despite the efforts of everyone on their side, Apollo still ends up losing his life. This marks the beginning of a very dark and difficult time for Jasper. They start to throw themselves into their heroism. Now as a member of the Sentinels, they garner even more public attention as they start to go even harder on all types of crime, escalating to sending villians and even street criminals to the hospital on a regular basis. The media speculates of they somehow orchestrated Magnum Opal's death, which fules their bitterness and in turn their agression.

After Apollo returns from the dead, several things in their life fall back into place, and they end up marrying Apollo, but not before killing his father for all he's done. Jasper retires from heroism after they establish themselves as a an architect, and take a young superhuman named Ezekiel under their wing and train him to be a hero.

Personality

Jasper begins the story with a very black and white world veiw, and the belief that everything rests on their shoulders. they have a lot of internal guilt and self-loathing, which mostly manifests itself as a constant desire to work themselves far past their limits

Aside from that, Jasper is sarcastic, emotionally withdrawn, but feircly loyal and a true believer in the inherent good of the human spirit. They have a deep belief that everyone, deep down, is good, but not everyone can access that part of themselves and act upon it. They're determined not to be that kind of person themself though. They want to prove to themself that they're capable of great good.

Powers

Jasper has the ability to adopt properties of light. Including glowing, super speed, moving through clear objects, and indicing UV burns. They get their powers from a liniage beginning with creatures in Jewish folklor known as Hashmallim. Jasper's powers require a lot of strength to maintain, which is part of why they train to rigorously.
