"Would you like some sparkle with that wine?"

- Jocelyn, serving wine in the Great Hall, whilst showing off one of her sparkly dresses

Jocelyn Light (née Kimble; 19 AGE - ) is a human who now serves as Chief Decorator of Glasleigh Kingdom.

Appearance

Jocelyn is a dark-skinned woman, with lengthy jet-black hair, which she usually wears loose. In her earliest days as a servant (in Kei/Lennart Castle), she wore simple brown garments, like the rest of the servants. However, after she moved to New Atlantis (and began working as a waitress), she assembled a wardrobe of much more vibrant dresses, her favourite of which was a ruby-red one. From then on, she was considered one of the most beautiful ladies in the entire palace - to the point where even Aliana got a little jealous!

During her years as a guard, Jocelyn cut her hair, and wore a steel helmet and a full suit of light leather armour. However, after she retired from this, she grew her hair back out again, and resumed wearing dresses (which were now a little larger, but still as brightly-coloured as before).

Personality

Jocelyn is a confident and outgoing woman, who always enjoys socialising with the people around her. When she's serving food at breakfast, she'll always try her best to put a smile on people's faces, and give them a bright start to the day.

During her years in New Atlantis, Duke Nestor always appreciated her charisma: he sometimes got her to negotiate favourable deals when making large purchases. However, she wouldn't have made a good leader, as she was always too eager to please people!

Relationships

Chris - Jocelyn's childhood friend, and eventual husband. The two first met in Light Castle, when they were both 4 years old. Unfortunately, Chris was bullied by most of the castle's inhabitants (mainly due to him being a fake) - and so, Jocelyn was one of his only friends.

During her teenage years, Jocelyn was unfortunately separated from Chris, as she moved away. However, they kept in touch - and they resumed their friendship once they both moved to New Atlantis. By now, Chris's original body had faded, and been replaced by a child's body - so their relationship temporarily took on more of a parent/child dynamic. However, Chris's third body was a full-sized adult one - and, after he moved into this, Chris's and Jocelyn's friendship turned into romance, and ultimately marriage.

Rupert - A soldier in New Atlantis, and Jocelyn's first husband. Due to her highly visible role as a waitress, many of the soldiers worked hard to impress her - and ultimately, Rupert was the one who impressed her most. Eventually, they married - and, when Jocelyn found out that she was pregnant, Rupert retired from the military. Sadly, Rupert never got to meet the baby, as he died from an old battle injury before she was born.

Conor - An older elf, who has served as Jocelyn's mentor at various stages of her life. They first got to know each other in Light Castle, where the then-18-year-old Conor stood up to people's attempts to bully Chris, and influenced Jocelyn to become his friend. Later on, after they both moved to New Atlantis, Jocelyn regularly cleaned the treehouse where Conor and his wife Cheryl lived. Indeed, when the Elvish couple journeyed to Magnifloria to have their first biological child, Craig, Jocelyn went with them, in order to take care of the new parents and keep Chris company.

Finally, when Conor became the ruler of Light Kingdom (then re-named Glasleigh Kingdom), Jocelyn moved to serve him - and, the two now enjoy a very successful working relationship.

Story

Early years

Jocelyn was born in the year 19AGE, in the town of Sunrise Cliffs, in eastern Light Kingdom. Her father Leonard was a retired soldier, while her mother Jennifer worked as a tailor. She also had an older brother named Henry (who was usually known as 'Beardy'); however, he was very violent and temperamental, and his parents had their hands full trying to stop him from lashing out at his poor younger sister!

Jocelyn's first of several moves came when she was four years old. Her father Leonard got a new job as King Desmond's chief military strategist - and so, the family moved westwards to Light Castle. Here, Jocelyn met the young prince Christopher Light - who was due to be King Desmond's heir. However, he was a fake - and therefore, many of the other children (and even many of the adults) disliked him and actively tried to make his life miserable. Jocelyn, on the other hand, grew to feel sorry for Chris - and she quickly became his best friend. Together, they'd spend hours playing with their wooden toys - and sometimes get up to mischief, playing pranks on the adults whenever they thought they could get away with it.

Shortly after Jocelyn turned 13, her father Leonard got a more prestigious job, as the chief strategist of Kei Silver's kingdom. As a result, the family had to move again - this time northwards, to Kei Castle. Here, Jocelyn became educated in basic potions - and, after turning 16, started her career as a servant, performing various menial tasks around the castle. However, within a year, the family split in two: her older brother Beardy relished King Kei's authoritarian rule (as it gave him an opportunity to be as brutal as he liked towards rule-breakers); however, Jocelyn resented the lack of freedom and poor pay.

Settling in New Atlantis

When Jocelyn was 17, she made her third move, this time on her own - to King Kei's main rivals in New Atlantis. When she arrived, her natural beauty was immediately recognised, and she found employment as a waitress. At first, she wore a simple red dress, which had been made for her back in Kei Castle by her mother. However, she soon supplemented this with a range of dazzling outfits, in every bright colour imaginable, paid for by Duke Nestor himself.

Of course, Jocelyn's work as a waitress couldn't occupy her all day - so, she filled the rest of her time with more typical servant tasks (such as cleaning and washing). Indded, it was when she was performing this work for Conor and Cheryl, that she was re-united with Chris. He escaped from Light Kingdom to New Atlantis - and, after his original body was due to fade, he was placed into a newly-constructed five-year-old's body, and adopted by the Elvish couple. Jocelyn and Chris resumed their childhood friendship - and, her presence certainly helped him to feel more at ease in his new home.

At this stage, Chris's child-like body precluded Jocelyn from pursuing a romantic relationship with him. However, this wasn't a problem at all - as her good looks and charismatic demeanour made her one of the most sought-after partners by the castle's male population. She was even able to attract the attention of foreign princes - and, when they visited New Atlantis, she enjoyed brief romantic flings with several of them. Most impressed of all was Prince Rommel of Waldia, who even offered to take Jocelyn back to his own castle, and employ her as his mistress. However, she turned the offer down, not wishing to be separated from Chris for a second time.

Of course, Jocelyn wasn't just romantically involved with visiting princes. She also had longer-term relationships with a number of Duke Nestor's best soldiers - each of whom passed on some of their combat knowledge to her. Eventually, she became quite a skilled fighter in her own right - to the point where she was employed as a guard herself. She was the first non-magical woman to serve in Nestor's army - and, while she never actually had to use her skills in combat, she would have been capable of going toe to toe with most men had that situation arisen: while she was outmatched in raw physical strength, her superior speed and knowledge of tactics would have helped her.

Motherhood and return to Light Kingdom

Eventually, when Jocelyn was 26, she opted to settle down with a soldier named Rupert. Two years later, Jocelyn discovered that she was expecting her first child, and Rupert opted to retire from the battlefield to devote his energy to his family. Tragically, he never got to meet his daughter: he died of complications from an old battle injury, three months before little Sally was born.

Two years later, Chris's creator King Desmond passed away. Chris was invited to succeed him as ruler of Light Kingdom; however, he declined, and offered the position to Conor. Nevertheless, both Chris and Jocelyn offered to follow Conor to Light Kingdom (then re-named 'Glasleigh Kingdom') in order to serve under him. By now, Chris was in his third artificial body - a full-sized adult one - and so, he and Jocelyn were finally able to start a romantic relationship. Two years later, they married: they had no children of their own (as Chris, being a fake, was unable to reproduce), but they brought up Sally as their child.

By now, Jocelyn was in her mid-30s, and she had lost some of her youthful appearance. She still served as a waitress occasionally; however, she found herself spending more time creating dresses for younger women to wear - as well as decorating the great hall itself. Thus, Conor appointed her as his castle's Chief Decorator, to ensure that the castle looked as spectacular as possible for feasts and other special events. At long last, Jocelyn had all the pieces in place: a loving family, a well-paying job, and a good working relationship with her boss. She hoped that, after all of her moves, she had finally found somewhere to settle for life.

Trivia

Jocelyn speaks four languages: Modern Lumic, Modern Archonian, Standard Lennartine, and Novoatlantean.
