- Frederick's order at every alehouse he attends

Frederick Featherstone (15 AGE - ) is the Regent of Lennart Kingdom. He is expected to serve as such until his step-daughter, Queen Kylie, is old enough to start ruling.

Appearance

Frederick is lightly-built and shorter than average; however, his appearance is deceptive: his Dwarvish heritage gives him above-average physical strength

When he worked as a guard in Lennart Kingdom, he looked very smart and respectable: he had carefully-combed black hair, a clean-shaven face, and a meticulously-polished iron suit of armour. However, after two months of adventuring, he was on the run and no longer able to look after his own appearance. As a result, his hair had become untidy; he had grown a dirty and scraggy beard; and his armour had become dirty and started to rust in certain places.

In later life, as Regent of Lennart Kingdom, he still had his beard; however, it was much more neatly-trimmed. He also left dressed in ornate blue and gold cloaks, as was befitting his status as a regent.

Personality

Frederick's military upbringing taught him to value honesty and bravery, and he is unwaveringly loyal to friends who exhibit those traits. In addition, he is usually cheerful, and tries to make the best of any bad situation, regularly raising the spirits of his friends and allies.

In his younger years, he could often come across as immature and goofy, to the point of embarrassing himself (although his heart was usually in the right place). Later on in life, he did manage to rein in this aspect of his personality somewhat - although, he still wasn't above playing the occasional prank on his children. He tended to use these jokes as an unorthodox method of punishment - reasoning that it was far more humane than what Nestor did to his own children. Still, like the merman duke, he did high expectations of his children - although he didn't spoil or play favourites with them (in the way Nestor did with Aliana).

Relationships

Cheryl - An elf who accompanied Frederick on his journey to search for the Silver Oak. He attempted to forge a romantic relationship with her; however, his general immaturity and obsession with apple juice eventually put her off.

Meriandra - A princess of New Atlantis, whom Frederick developed an attraction to during his time there. However, he didn't know how to approach her, so he simply ended up stalking her all around the castle. Eventually, she was put completely off him when she caught him sneaking into her bedroom, disguised as a ferret.

Aliana - A princess of New Atlantis, who went on adventures with her boyfriend Kyle. Frederick accompanied the pair on some of these - and eventually dated Aliana after she and Kyle broke up. However, the relationship didn't last: he ended it after she shrunk his cider cellar as a prank.

Anita - The mother of Queen Kylie. After she settled in Lennart Kingdom, Frederick fell in love with her, and began to treat Kylie as his own adopted daughter. Eventually, the couple married, and had two children of their own: Paul, and Sid (so named because these were the closest names he could think of to 'Apple' and 'Cider'!)

Story

Early years

Frederick Featherstone was born in the year 15 AGE, in the backwater village of Chilverton, in western Lennart Kingdom. His father Bruyan was a retired Lennart Castle guard, who was one-quarter dwarf, while his mother Ethelle had served as a cook - but now, they ran their own family farm. At the age of five, Frederick began work there - and he soon found that he loved spending time with the farm animals, whether they be pigs or cows, chickens or goats. He could remember the name of every single one - and he dreamed of following in his father's footsteps as the owner of the farm one day.

Unfortunately, this dream was not to come true. At the age of 12, Frederick was conscripted into the military of Lennart Castle, and never allowed to return to the family farm again, except for one month of every year during the harvest season. The training was intense: for ten hours a day, six days a week, he had to practise sparring with his fellow conscripts, using a variety of mock weapons. Even his time off was tightly controlled: the he was never perform in 'adult' activities, such as gambling or drinking alcohol (the fanciest beverage he was permitted to drink was apple juice - and, even then, only on special occasions). As a result, he instead took up drawing - a discipline in which he had achieved a high degree of competence by the time he reached adulthood.

Seven years later, at age 19, Frederick's training was completed - and the king was so impressed with him that he was permitted to serve as his royal bodyguard.

Escape from Lennart Castle

In the end, Frederick only remained in the job for one year. Shortly after turning 20, he overheard the king's conversation with one of his advisers, which revealed him to be an oppressive tyrant! It was at this point that he stole a cutlass (which he affectionately named Vera), and then escaped from the castle to start a new life in the merman palace of New Atlantis, along with his new friends, Kyle and Aliana. The journey there was eventful: at one point Frederick accidentally took the wrong potion, causing him to transform into a ferret! Even after the potion wore off, he was left with two tufts of white fur on his cheeks, as a permanent reminder of his own silly antics.

Shortly after arriving, Frederick was taken ill and rushed to the palace hospital. Fortunately, his life was saved by the quick intervention of the head doctor: Aliana's younger sister, Meriandra. Thereafter, the eternally-grateful Frederick wished to get to know Meriandra better....but, sadly, he lacked the confidence to speak to her, since the draconian regime he had lived under at the barracks had never permitted him to speak to women. He followed Meriandra around the castle wherever she went, hoping to work up the courage to talk to her, but unfortunately never quite managing it. Outwardly, it appeared to everyone else that he had developed an unhealthy obsession with her - but, in reality, he was a harmless admirer who just didn't know what to say.

Life as an adventurer

Several weeks later, Frederick's friend Kyle was attacked and magically de-aged, trapping him within the body of a 10-year-old. After some research, it was determined that the only known cure was the leaf from the mythically-rare Silver Oak tree. Frederick was sent away from New Atlantis, to the principality of Belaya Reka, in order to search for one - sadly, to no avail. By now, he'd discovered that the fake king was livid from him for escaping, and had placed a lucrative bounty upon his head. Since every man and his dog would be looking for him, he had to keep a very low profile at all times. He thus spent the next month or so as an itinerant with no permanent home, sheltering in caves and hunting and foraging for whatever meagre food would sustain him.

In the end, Frederick accepted that he had no hope of finding the Silver Oak, and retreated to safer ground. It was here that he teamed up with Christopher Light, a 16-year-old boy whose body had been stolen by a cheeky 7-year-old named Jake. Frederick searched around the town for help - which he eventually found in one of the inns, in the form of a beautiful Elvish woman named Cheryl. She began to fall for Frederick - and after directing him to a wizard who could restore Chris and Jake to their usual bodies, the feelings began to be reciprocated. She agreed to join Chris and Frederick on their travels - starting with a journey to New Atlantis, which Cheryl had always wanted to visit.

Unfortunately, the dynamic between the three of them quickly began to sour. Frederick ordered his favourite drink - apple juice - from a bar, and Chris and Cheryl both made fun of him for being 'childish'. Frederick then set out to prove that he wasn't a wuss by making increasingly outlandish orders from the bar - but, instead, he only succeeded in embarrassing himself and making himself look like a freak. Furthermore, Chris believed that Frederick only cared about Cheryl, and he felt uncomfortable and unwanted as the third wheel. Meanwhile, Frederick's trust in Chris had eroded to the point where he believed everything that Chris did was an attempt to annoy him. On the ship to New Atlantis, the situation escalated to a physical fight - after which Chris was taken ill with an abnormally high body temperature. He was eventually saved; however, relations between Frederick and his two companions had broken down irretrievably, and upon arriving in New Atlantis, he simply parted ways with them.

After returning to New Atlantis, Frederick kept a low profile. However, he did remain friends with Aliana - and, after she broke up with Kyle, he became her next romantic partner. The relationship lasted for six months, and represented a time of personal growth for Frederick - as he finally graduated from apple juice to apple cider. However, the same could not be said of Aliana - who insisted on shrinking his barrels of apple cider as a prank. Frederick was livid - and after this incident, he not only broke up with Aliana, but left New Atlantis altogether: he returned to Lennart Kingdom, to reprise his former role as a royal bodyguard. Unfortunately, Tom ordered Frederick to be very harsh withKyle - following him around everywhere he went, and even hitting him when he didn't follow the rules. As a result, Kyle eventually escaped back to New Atlantis, his friendship with Frederick broken.

After Kyle's escape, Tom fell ill, leaving him unable to rule Lennart Kingdom. Thus, Frederick was entrusted with a mission to recover Kyle from New Atlantis, to rule in his father's place. When this failed, he was instead sent to the distant realm of Chernaya Reka, where Kyle's brother Jake was believed to be staying. Frederick quickly discovered this renegade prince; however, he was too distracted by Jake's girlfriend Olga to do anything useful. As a result, he earned himself a merciless beating from Jake - while Olga bewitched his skin to look like tree bark. He was eventually fixed; however, following the failure of both his missions, he fell into a depression, believing he was of no use to Lennart Kingdom.

Settling down, fatherhood and regency

About a year after the failure of Frederick's missions, a 17-year-old girl called Anita arrived in Lennart Kingdom, cradling a newborn baby. It soon emerged that Anita was Jake's partner prior to meeting Olga, and the baby was her daughter with him (whom she had named Kylie). Once again, Frederick felt an intense attraction to this dark elf - only this time, the feelings were reciprocated. Frederick struck up a friendship with Anita, helping her to take care of Kylie (in Jake's absence) - and, this friendship quickly blossomed into a full-blown romance.

Within a year, they made plans to get married. Unfortunately, these plans were initially derailed by the discovery that Anita was still legally married to Jake. Furthermore, Jake himself was in a similar predicament: he wished to marry Olga, and planned to end his existing marriage by killing Anita. In order to achieve this, he snuck into Lennart Castle, and poisoned some pastries that were to be delivered to Frederick's and Anita's room. However, upon seeing Anita again (and noticing she was now slim and no longer pregnant), Jake decided he wanted to resume married life with her after all - and set about attempting to kill Frederick by tossing fireballs at him. He almost succeeded (even setting Frederick's hair on fire at one point), until an ice mage arrived on the scene and saved Frederick's life. After this incident, Jake was imprisoned, and Tom finally agreed to Anita's request to divorce him.

About six weeks later, Frederick and Anita were married. Sadly for them, the wedding day itself descended into chaos (instigated by Nestor) - but, they quickly put that awful day behind themselves, and began to enjoy married life. Within a few short months, Anita had become pregnant with her second child (and her first with Frederick) - and, when he was born, Frederick named him 'Paul' (which was short for 'Apple'). Three years later, a second son followed; Frederick chose to name him 'Sid' (which was short for 'Cider'). For the next ten years, Frederick and Anita had a fairly quiet life raising Kylie, Paul and Sid; however, when Kylie was 15 years old, Tom died of old age. As a result, Kylie became queen; however, Frederick would serve as regent, keeping a watchful eye over the realm, until she was old enough to rule.

Trivia

Frederick knows four languages: Lennartine (both the kingdom's standard and his local dialect), Novoatlantean, Modern Archonian, and Chernic.
