Kyre
"flawless"
Although Iluun didn't give much insight into his upbringing, he gave a few details. He was raised from birth to act as a counterspy against Malenti - a mutant variety of Sahuagin that look indistinguishable from Sea Elves - infiltrating his people's society. What that training entails remains unclear.

Iluun was selected by Spymaster Vulluran to execute an extremely delicate mission. The Amakiir Kyre received intel that described the Sahuagin conflicting greatly with the Western Triton Empire and it would be Iluun's responsibility to do some recon on the situation and report back. Arriving to the Western Empire immediately revealed that the entire civilization had been devestated practically overnight. It seemed once-thriving and noble empire had buckled under the force of the Sahuagin's army. To Iluun, this made very little sense, as the Sahuagin in no way had the numbers or might to topple the Tritons according to the rest of Amakiir Kyre's intelligence. Reporting this to Spymaster Vulluran prompted further investigation. Thus, Iluun found himself with a new task: infiltrate the Sahuagin's stronghold to discover what happened to the Tritons.
It took a great deal of time to enter undetected, but Iluun eventually navigated his way into the former capital of the Western Empire. There he found a most horrible reality: many of the Tritons not killed, but instead captured and tortured day in and day out. He attempted to find the reason for their imprisonment and abuse, but there seemed to be none. He attempted to make contact with the prisoners verbally and psionically, but despite his best efforts they appeared entirely broken in body and mind, the proud defenders of the deep left mere husks of their former selves.
Reporting this information to Spymaster Vulluran granted a new order: if Iluun can't identify the nefarious purpose for keeping the prisoners, kill them all just to be safe. Iluun was frankly horrified. Killing Sahuagin and Malenti was one thing, but these Tritons were defenseless and needed help. He really tried to make himself follow through, but his heart just couldn't take it. Instead he continued desperately trying to get any of the hundreds of Triton to become responsive. He eventually had a singular success: a horribly beaten and whipped yet still coherent Triton man with orange scales. The Triton asked of his people, seemingly unconcerned about his own state, and Iluun knew if he told the man the truth he'd get himself killed trying to save his fellow soldiers. So Iluun lied, told the wounded Triton he was the only one left and the only hope his kind had to fight back. The Triton did not weep, only bowed his head and followed Iluun's lead in silence.

"adrift, lost, directionless"
Leaving the Sahuagin stronghold without killing a single Triton went directly against orders. Freeing the orange Triton - called Alaryc, he learned eventually - went directly against orders. There was no way they could run back to Amakiir for safety, they'd likely both be assassinated or worse by the Kyre as soon as they even touched the border. So Iluun found himself on the run, pursued by Sahuagin and sharks as he desperately tried to keep the gravely injured Alaryc alive and moving, without a plan for the first time in his entire life. Sahuagin can track blood for miles and they couldn't stop long enough to get Alaryc properly patched up. It was the only thing he could think of to take a hard turn towards land and simply hope a surfacer would be able to help them...
