Bulwarks Character Guide (Zach and Mai)

As is typical of twins, Mai and Zach were inseparable growing up. They clung to each other like glue, reluctant to do anything without the other at their side. However, as they grew into adulthood, they were strongly encouraged to choose different career paths from each other. Zach was set on becoming a bulwark. His magic was fairly potent due to his A- blood type, making him an ideal choice. Mai, on the other hand, was born with O+ blood type, the weakest blood type. In comparison to Zach's magic, theirs was significantly weaker. Mai was determined to always be with Zach, so they spent many sleepless nigh honing abilities as dependable as Zach's magic.

Currently, Mai and Zach work as co-workers in their bulwarks office. While they are not partners, Mai still makes an effort to work closely with Zach. They check up on him regularly to make sure he stays out of danger. Although Mai's overprotective behavior towards Zach often prevents him from getting hurt, it regularly proves to be a hindrance to their relationship.

Even though Mai may come off as emotionally distant, they care deeply for Zach. They express this by constantly checking in to see if he's okay. Mai will pack his lunch, clean his room, and schedule his doctor's appointments. In a way, Mai acts more like his parent than his sibling. It's quite evident that Mai loves Zach with how much they're willing to sacrifice in their own life to ensure his is blossoming. If they had to die for his happiness, Mai would do it in a heartbeat.

Mai inspires Zach every day to be the best person he can be. Zach knows Mai will always be there for him, even if they can be critical of his choices. With how much they've given him, he feels a sort of guilt inside that he'll never be able to provide the same amount of kindness. Zach has tried multiple times to get Mai to open up to him, but has failed every time. He just wishes Mai would depend on him more and stop coddling him.
