“This is the last time I’m ever taking contract work.” X-AM growled under his breath, taking off across the pavement. He had misjudged everything, every single thing that had led to this moment, and he was furious with himself and the friend who had put him up to this. The redhead was in so much trouble.

He can’t believe everything went so impressively badly.

They wanted to explore.

That had been all they wanted as a child, to be able to explore the world and all it had to offer, to meet people from all different walks of life, to be able to see some of the amazing wonders that they had only been able to dream of.

Their family wanted them to be a doctor.

They laugh quietly, the sound strained as they lay crumpled in the dirt, trying to will their lungs to keep working. Maybe they should have. Not that it would help them now, even ‘modern medicine’ wasn’t advanced enough quite yet, or at the very least the kind they needed wasn’t quite widespread. They tried to clench their fists, but only one hand twitched before falling again.

Captain Rei Sarlo lay in the dirt, staring up at the sky, trying to will themselves to get up, to escape, to flee. But all they can do is try to stave off the loss of energy and consciousness that they know is coming.
