The Bane of Souls

The Bane of Souls, more commonly known simply as The Bane, is an ancient elderfield and is the current Seventh Lord of the Ten Warlords of the Underrealm. He is the master of the most beautiful territory in the Underrealm, the Thorned City.

The Bane takes the appearance of an ageless demon who towers at almost 7 feet. They have long platinum white hair and six tall horns that grow in the appearance of a crown around their head. They have deep red skin and dark eyes with piercing yellow pupils. The Bane has large hands that are tipped with long and sharp, black claws at the end of each finger. Beneath their attire, they have a scatter of random black scales across their body. In addition to that, they have a set of black smooth plates that runs from their neck, along the spine, all the way down to their long tail. Occasionally the Bane would take a more feminine form and would have a leaner and slender frame with a pair of heavy breasts.

The Bane usually dons a long, flowing, green dress over a white, high collared garment with a large opening on the chest area. On their shoulders sits a velvet, plum-colored cloak with golden shoulder pieces. They would also wear some accessories, notably a pair of golden dangly earing with cut emeralds on them.

In the flashbacks set 20 years prior, The Bane would have a more youthful vibe despite their age. They would have an almost identical attire to their current one, however in place of the cloak, they would opt for a sash of the same color. The Bane would also have a curtain of short bangs right over their eyes. They'd constantly have a toothy grin and a freindly, warm vibe that drew people in.

The Bane is a bitter and powerful demon. They seem to care very little for things, besides the well-being of their City. Their kindness and utmost attention is reserved privately for their family which includes a large harem and many, many more children. They are equally gentle and soft-hearted for all their coldness and walls. But even with their family, The Bane still has their borders, keeping a safe-enough distance away.

Contrary to what most believe a Demon Lord, especially one of the Ten, would be like, The Bane does not have a taste for chaos or bloodshed. They prefer the calm and quietness of peace. However they don’t seem to care either if others wage wars as long as they themselves or their people don’t have to participate. The Bane enjoys a lavish lifestyle and does not tolerate any less and to intrude that at all would bring out their ire. They also seem to enjoy a hobby of gardening, topiary and flower arranging. It seems that when they attend to such hobbies, the great lord’s mood would shift to a much more serene one, sometimes even gaining a tranquil smile upon their stone-cold face.

For all their habits and un-demon-like behaviors, The Bane constantly reminds both their friends and foes, equally, of their strength. A power not to be respected, but feared. The Bane is a force to be dreaded and they will have every last being know that in their very souls.

The Bane came into existence as a monstrous vine who wrung and drained the spirits of a thousand trees. They manifested into a wretched demon who lurked in the darkness of the haunted forests. They were hated as a pest in the mortal plane, and shunned as a weakling in the demonic realm. To prove them wrong, The Bane sought out to become stronger and only when they defeated and devoured one hundred of the Arch Fiend’s mightiest, did they earn the respect of both worlds. Legends even said they slew an Angel with their bare hands alone. They became so feared that their name would be lost to history and they would only be known as The Bane who Wrung Out Souls, or simply The Bane. However they insists on being referred to as the Duke of Thorns. Although rather arrogant and rambunctious, they prefer to keep a low profile at their residence in the Withering Grove, which contrary to its name, is full of life and plants thanks to their rather unexpected fondness for pretty plants. The only time they would ever return to the mortal plane is when they decide to pick a new plant for their ever growing garden. During one such run, they came across the most beautiful being they've ever seen in they're life. They stayed around longer which was their first mistake. When they eventually returned home, they were at the cusp of deaths door, and in their hand, a single burnt rose. The Bane learned their lesson well and since then, the once lush Withering Grove declined into a place worthy of it's name.

• In the Modern AU setting, The Bane is of South Asian origins. In this setting his name is Sanvar Baheen and he is a Drag Queen/male host who goes by the name Rosie.
• The Bane is the main character in "A Tale of Roses", a mini game developed for the O2A2 game jam of 2023!
