Mild mannered and somewhat introverted. Always tries to come off as friendly and respectful. Doesn't like to burden other's with his problems, sometimes his stoicism can be off putting to strangers. Values independence a little too much, which can lead to him stubbornly refusing help when he really needs it. Likes to keep a small friend circle, less people, less chance for drama. While he desperately wants not to get too tangled up in other people's problems, especially if they aren't friends, his generosity often wins over his common sense. Has a strong moral code for himself, and the slightest perceived violation of it is a huge blow to his self-esteem.

Just when Marlin thought life couldn't throw any more curve balls at him, he gets a phone call from his estranged father. He's dying and he wants to give him his farm and do what he pleases with it. He isn't sure how to feel, both about the prospect of owning a farm or about the man giving it to him. He agrees to meet him in person either way, after he takes care of some things.

Unfortunately, by the time he's able to get down there, the old man has since passed away. But it's okay, the good townsfolk are there to make sure he knows how much he and this stranger were really alike.
