BACKGROUND  

The beginning

Genesis was originally from a small town in Mexico. She lived a harsh life where every aspect of her life was controlled. What she ate, wore, hung out with, studied, likes, hated, spent her free time doing and what music she could listen to. She was forced to maker herself quiet and small which was the part she hated the most. She hated being stripped of her voice. She finally drew the line when her parents attempted to set up an arranged marriage between her and the local priest who was several decades past her senior. She was only 15 when she to fled from home, gathering her friends up to become a traveling band also known as a mariachi. She never had much care for her past life so suddenly leaving her home wasn't sad to her, she was just excited for the adventures to come up. She didn't have to worry about a bed time, living under rules or anything, she was free to do what ever and who ever she wanted. The first few years on the road were rough. Most of her band mates were also just teenagers like her so none of them were actually prepared for the difficulty of living on their own with no place to call home. Most of them decided to go back home but there was always the four main ones that stuck through it all. They learned to be resourceful and gave it their everything when they performed to increase the income they would get from the crowds. Genesis herself would often flirt with crowd members to encourage them to pay more or to take her out on a date where she was only in it for sex or free food. They where never in the same place twice. They always hopped town to town, meeting so many faces, taking so much money, kissing so many mouths but never taking the time to care about a single one of those people. Never caring to sit down and actually chat. The strategy to getting free food or a place to sleep was easy, find someone in the crowd to seemed to really take a liking to them, bombard them with love and affection and see if you can get a free meal or a place to stay out of them. While it was manipulative, it was what they had to do to survive. It wasn't like they promised them they would be in a relationship or marriage. They all avoided saying the words. "I love you" to towns people because they did not want to give them false hope about there being a possibility of a relationship.

Finding the Encanto

Thirty years later, Genesis and her gang were in deep Colombia, trudging through forest trying to read a wet ruined map when all of a sudden they saw fireworks in the distance, right in between a large cracked in half mountain. They found it odd since there wasn't supposed to be a city yet so they raced on their horses towards the direction of the fireworks. It took them around a few days but they finally arrived to the small village. When they arrived, everyone in the village looked at them in confusion. Genesis found a decent spot and told her teammates to get down and get prepared. Almost the whole village gathered around the group as they prepared themselves for a performance like they have done many times before. Genesis smiled and raised her arms up exclaiming (She says this in Spanish but I'm auto-translating for simplicity sake), "Good morning Colombia! How are we feeling today?! My name is Genesis Cortez and this is my band and we're here to perform some songs for you!". She placed her guitar case open on the floor and gently kicked it to direct attention to it, "Please feel free to give us some money if you enjoy our performance! Thank you!!". She whispered to her band mates and then looked back at the crowd. They began to play their signature song Cancion del Mariachi, the crowd grew and people started clapping and dancing along to the music. 

They were about to play another song when they were interrupted by an old lady loudly gasping. They looked in the direction of the gasp and saw an old lady in a red dress with her mouth wide open, pointing at them. After stumbling on her words for a bit, Alma finally voiced that they were the first outsiders to come in and if anyone followed them. Genesis assured her that they weren't followed and they could stay to attempt to protect them if they provided them refuge since they were exhausted from the trip. Alma agreed so Genesis and her band mates stayed in the village a few days to protect it in case someone else came in. During their stay, Genesis started doing something she has never done before.... Talking to people and genuinely listen to others when they talk. She especially grew a liking to Alma's son Bruno and began singing and performing love songs she wrote just for him to try to win over his affection.

After a few months of staying to protect the village, Genesis decided that she was tired of being on the run and really loved the community so much that she decided to stay. To her surprise, her band mates also decided to stay so they all decided to permanently live in the village. Current day, Genesis is a music teacher for the village. Teaching young and old the way of music. Her only complaint is her mother in law pestering her about having grand kids which she does NOT want to have since she feels she is not mother material.

Bruno Madrigal^{[Crush/boyfriend]}

When Genesis was performing, she noticed that Bruno was one of the few in the crowd that wasn't happily dancing. He just had a timid smile on his face while he bobbed his head, which was the first time in her entire performing career she had ever seen someone react in such a way. She accidentally fell in love with him and decided that the best way to get him out of his shell was to write, sing and perform love songs she made for him. There's not a single day she wasn't singing to him. He was flattered by all the tributes to him but having everyone look at him for his reaction to these public displays of affection made his anxiety so bad that he ended up locking himself in his room to escape her constant serenades. Genesis noticed Bruno hadn't been in the village for a few days so she showed up to the Casita and found out that Bruno locked himself in his room. She got permission to be let in and she sat by Bruno and talked it out with him. Bruno admitted he liked her too but having her pull him into her performances made him terrified. They agreed to get together but that she couldn't pull him into her performances without his permission but that she can sing and dance her songs for him in private. 

Several unnamed one night stands^[Ex]

Considering she is a traveling musician, she has had her fair share of one night stands with many people. She doesn't remember a single name or who anyone looks like. She could reunited with someone she slept with and not even recognize them. Thankfully despite this, she somehow has not had a baby or and STD.

 Relationships with Bruno's family  

Abuela Alma^{[Mother in law]}

Alma was terrified when she saw Genesis with her band performing at the center. It was the first time she had EVER seen strangers and she worried that if they came then that means bad people could come too. Alma also didn't approve of Cortez trying to court her son due to her loose and nontraditional attitude. Cortez never shyed away from singing her true feelings towards Bruno even if those feelings aren't family friendly and explicit such as Genesis's favorite song she made for him. Despite not liking her, Genesis does her best to not disrespect Alma since she knows Bruno loves his mother.

Pepa^{[Sister in law]}

Genesis has a decent relationship with Pepa, she loves playing near her because it makes rainbows above her head and she finds it fun. She likes hanging out with Bruno's siblings to learn about his past and just generally having girls nights.

Julieta^{[Sister in law]}

With Julieta, Genesis loves to help her cook for the family since she can see how tiring cooking for such a big family could be. She likes to take the weight off her shoulders. She's not very good at cooking or baking but she does her best to learn from Julieta.

Augustine^[Compadre]

Genesis finds Augustine cute but isn't a home wrecker (She learned her lesson long ago to stay away from taken especially married men) so she doesn't make any advancements to him. She doesn't hang out with him since they don't share much in common but she is often the one to make emergency food deliveries to him if Julieta is busy with others. She does use him sometimes to be a back up performer when it comes to using the piano while she sings or strums her guitar.

Felix^[Compadre]

Unlike Augustine, Genesis actually does hang out with Felix. She loves his joking/playful nature and loves to go back and forth with him on jokes. He's one of the few that she considers a "friend" and not family since he technically also married into the family. She also likes how happy Pepa is with him, especially when they're dancing together with seemingly no care in the world. It inspires Cortez to be in her own first loyal committed relationship.

Dolores^[Niece]

Dolores loves hearing all of Genesis's songs. She loves being able to hear new songs instead of the same songs over and over again. The only thing she hates is that she can hear Cortez planning out her more explicit songs and her "quiet" inappropriate jokes towards Bruno when they're alone or when she whispers it to him. Genesis gifted Dolores some ear plugs but while it doesn't drown out all of the sounds, it drowns out the quietest ones like whispering and people's heavy breathing in the distance.

Isabela^[Niece]

Isabela admires Genesis for her rebellious nature and how free spirited she is without worrying about anything. Cortez doesn't interact with Isabela much but she is there for her if she needed her. Genesis can slightly see herself in Isabela since she was also forced to be the perfect child of the family, but she sucked at it.

Luisa^[Niece]

Cortez does her best to comfort Luisa when she gets stressed but she honestly isn't the best at handling other peoples emotions. Genesis is use to looking for solutions and quick fixes, she's not use to just sitting down and letting someone let their feelings out. 

Camilo^[Nephew]

Genesis likes performing with Camilo because of his ability to change his appearance at a whim. This ability really helps her when she does her story driven songs because it can give the audience a more visual representation on the message or story of the song. After the incident with Bruno, Genesis uses Camilo to pretend to be Bruno when someone requests her do one of her songs for him. The only difference between the old performances and the new ones is that in the new ones, Cortez doesn't touch Camilo at all when she use to kiss/ hold or embrace Bruno. The only contact they make is dancing but they always leave room between them due to his age and out of respect for her boyfriend.

Mirabel^[Niece]

Mirabel loves helping Genesis write family friendly love songs for Bruno and made her a dress to replace the clothes she came into town with. Cortez likes to ruffle her hair when she comes to visit and loves to see Mirabel's enthusiastic nature and creative wit.

Antonio^[Nephew]

Antonio is one of the few Madrigals that Genesis doesn't really have much of a relationship with. She has nothing in common with him and he is just like any other child in the village just with powers. Cortez doesn't have much of a maternal drive so she doesn't care much for the kids in the family but is nice to them. She just likes seeing him enjoy her performances and dancing with his friends.

  Fun Facts 

• All my self inserts are Mexican American since that's my ethnicity but they're more subtle or unnoticeable, except for this on where it's all in your face
• Her concept came from this song (starts at 0:30) my dad use to play all the time
• A few other songs I can see her singing to Bruno are but aren't limited to Darte Un Beso, Yo Quisiera, and Title
• While Genesis can sing and speak Spanish fluently, I cannot lol. I understand it but when I speak back I have a thick accent and my sentences are choppy
