Andy Rivera

Andy is a main character in my slice-of-life story, who is Cody's older brother and Jeremy's best friend. He is a responsible, mature young man that is more on the serious side. He has a calm attitude and soft tone when talking to people he doesn't know well, and he applies the golden rule to everyone. He uses his strength and size to help others and loathes anyone who targets the vulnerable. He enjoys prioritizing his friends and family over himself, especially his little brother.
He's a sincere, down-to-earth young man who unashamedly adores the people and animals in his life. The big guy cooks and bakes for others, buys things for his loved ones, is a good listener, and supports his friends' artistic endeavors. While he can be grumpy, stubborn, and passive-aggressive, he has a heart of gold and a natural desire to help and protect people, and that includes people he’s never met.
In general, Andy has the body language and habits of someone who has a healthy amount of confidence and bravery. People would assume he doesn't have a timid or insecure bone in his body since he doesn't downplay his size and strength. He is often right beside his loved ones or directly behind them, and will stand in front of them if his protective instincts are triggered.

History
Childhood
Andy has an incredibly tragic childhood. His birth father went to jail after physically abusing him because he had a tantrum, and his mom was heavily affected by the pregnancy. While she was incredibly sweet and nurturing, she was often exhausted and weak. His stepdad often got impatient with him, especially when his mother began to suffer from pregnancy again. She passed away while in labor with Cody, with Eric abandoning both the boys because he believed that they killed her. Andy spent the rest of his childhood and young teen years in foster care, suffering from depression.
In middle school, he went from being bullied by his peers to being the one that tormented all of them. He would steal people's money so he could buy himself and his sick baby bro some snacks. Despite being a brute, Andy adored his brother and took pride in looking after him; he never once bullied or scared Cody. The two of them were best friends.
Adolescence
Andy's anger issues and tendency towards violence grew when Cody got diagnosed with leukemia. No one can call a time when Andy hurt Cody in any way, even when the brute was furious about something. Instead, he let Cody hold his hand or carried the little guy around because Cody was always sick from chemotherapy. Cody’s primary physician, or Lila's mother, decided to finally foster the brothers at this point, being confident that she could save him in her direct care.
In this new town, Andy continued his hobby of wandering the streets so he could find bullies to beat up. This eventually led to both the orphaned brothers coming across Jeremy being tormented, with Andy saving him and making a new best friend in the process. Later down the line, Andy and Cody move out together because they like the freedom and independence, but also because they both always felt like they were burdening this sweet family.

Invincible
Andy is so freaking tough that he could probably survive multiple gunshots. People have witnessed him casually lifting furniture, giant dogs, logs, and a car slightly off the ground with some adrenaline. He lifts normal-sized people off the ground like they're stuffed animals. Coordination isn’t really his thing either, since he can just shove his enemies to the ground and stand on them until they die.
Epic Gamer
Most of Andy's friends adore his fixation on video games. Playing video games is something he finds really relaxing, and a good way to calm him down when adult life treats him unfairly. He's also really good at them since he spent the majority of his time as a little kid playing games with his mom. They helped him when he had ongoing depressive episodes, and it's a good way Cody and him have bonded throughout their childhood together.
Knowledgeable
Taking really good care of his sick brother the majority of his life, also having a similar relationship towards his mother, he has a lot of knowledge and experience on the topics of hospital equipment, medicine, cures, available treatment for certain incidents or diseases, and more. He's also a huge nerd on the topics and history of religions, languages, and his heritage; Hispanic/Samoan cultures specifically.
Sweetheart
The folks and animals that Andy's close with clearly find comfort in his presence. They stand and sit close to him or subtly behind him, lean either their bodies or heads on him, and are completely comfortable with Andy expressing affection towards them. Cody and Jeremy heavily look up to Andy and respect him more than anyone else.
Flaws
Overprotective
Andy's relaxed and calm nature vanishes the minute he realizes someone has been demeaning or harming his loved ones, and if these bullies dared to even touch them, Andy will hunt down these thugs and make them regret their choices. He's the most protective of his bro, and while Cody understands Andy's empathetic mindset, he finds his overprotection patronizing and infuriating.
Violent
People have been left traumatized yet impressed by how ruthless, cruel, and scary he is when he fights; especially since Andy shows off how strong he really is once he snaps. He’s given plenty of bullies concussions, black eyes, bloody noses, broken bones, bruised limbs, shattered ribs, and more. He has also canonically hospitalized five men in his life while handicapping one of them for months.
Selfless
His friends and family wish that Andy wouldn't force himself to act so strong and brave all the time, especially when everyone has his back. The same can be said about this big guy always overworking himself. He doesn't want people to ever pity him or view him as weak or emotional, but more than anything he just doesn't want his loved ones to worry about him.
Depression
After the loss of his mother and disapearance of his step father, Andy had developed a severe case of depression. The intense stress of his little brother always being sick, hurt, and afraid added on to this. Taking anti-depressants has greatly improved his energy and mental health, but it's still a problem.
