OVERVIEW

67511769_OvMoYw8syijoQvS.png

Jason Shaver is a character central to the Alter Timeline, being a primary character in both Cult of Ustream and Now and Always. He is physiologically a Euthoran Shapeshifter, and spiritually a Darkwing Firedrake, while psychologically sharing traits of both. He appears in Gen 2 as a cameo character. Throughout both canons that Jason features in as a main character, he suffers a steady decline in mental health due to the pressures of leadership and the stresses of the situations he is forced to deal with.

Jason's mental health conditions currently include Complex PTSD, near-suicidal depression, crippling anxiety, clinical psychosis, and feelings of guilt, self-hatred, and worthlessness. He becomes a vampire during the first part of Now and Always / Arc 1: Ruins of Litaria, and is Patient Zero of what would later be termed as pure Type E vampirism. His body is riddled with scars from past battles and incidents, which he is initially annoyed with but later takes as a mark of pride for having survived those situations.

Part of Jason's soul is sealed away within the sapphire set in his pendant, a measure put into place by his mother. The entity within the pendant, referred to hereafter as "Shiveztel", is the remnants of Jason's draconic personality and self that he did not receive as a Shapeshifter, and has his fate intuition power activated earlier than Jason's. Shiveztel can only perceive the world through Jason, but is aware of who or what is touching the pendant at a given time, and burns those he does not recognize or trust. The pendant acts entirely in Jason's defense, ensuring the Shapeshifter has a future, and does so by planning for every variable he can identify, by influencing Jason's actions and gut impulses.

Over time, Shiveztel develops from simply being a shard of Jason's soul into forming his own, more complex soul, and after this point can be considered his own separate person rather than being another part of Jason. Even then, however, the pair forms a sort of symbiotic relationship, and are inherently incomplete without each other. Because Jason and Shiveztel are both the same person and not, Shiveztel has been given his own tab in this section, even though the page itself focuses primarily on Jason.

PERSONALITY

Due to severe trauma throughout his life, as well as other factors such as his vampirism, relationship with Jude, and the soul-shard within his pendant, Jason has several different, compartmentalized personality types that he typically refers to as "modes". While all of Jason's modes share his baseline personality, details such as his demeanor and behavior can vary incredibly depending on the mode.

MODES

Naturally impulsive, reckless, and sometimes aggressive, Jason conversely is also very intelligent and has a keen mind for tactics, strategy, and details that others might miss. His personality is malleable to his circumstances, but solidified by trauma and habit. Though Jason can be incredibly stubborn, he generally knows when an argument is lost and can sometimes be slightly defeatist when things go wrong. He is fiercely loyal to those close to him, and can be bitter and hostile to those who have wronged him. Despite everything, however, he can be surprisingly naive at times, and prior to his traumatic experiences was perhaps a little too trusting.

Jason struggles to recognize, process, and express his own emotions, but is surprisingly perceptive of the emotions of others and can be considered emotionally intelligent. However, due to being raised by dragons, he therefore emotes like a dragon, and does not have a good grasp of humanoid emoting. Good at heart, his morality has corroded in the wake of his trauma and experiences in his youth.

Suffering from several mental health complications, Jason can be anxious, restless, and antsy, particularly when at rest for too long. The mentality that he is to blame for anything bad that happens to anyone around him was beaten into him by his former master during his teenage years, and as a result he struggles with fairly severe self-hatred and feelings of worthlessness. Stress can strongly trigger nervousness and fear, and his ability to reason out what is and is not a threat is damaged to the point where he doesn't trust easily.

The most commonly-seen of his "alternate modes", this is typically Jason's more serious side poking out and focusing on getting things done. This particular mode is where Jason's intelligence and strategic mind truly shine, and he is able to quickly assess the resources he has to work with and form a baseline plan which can be refined once all the information is on the table. Because of this, when working with a group, Jason is usually treated as the primary tactician and strategist despite willingly letting someone else take the actual position of "leader".

Jason slides in and out of this mode easily. In fact, he even seems most comfortable in this state, as the logistics and tactical aspects of combat and missions distract him from the turmoil that his head is usually in. Rather, they put his mind in a different sort of hyperactivity: his thoughts can become a whirlwind of ideas, some of them seeming out of left field or "crazy enough to work". Though he doesn't always communicate his thought process, the result is that he frequently formulates ideas that involve calculated risk and instinct-driven tactics.

This mode is one of two where his draconic heritage comes to the fore, the other being his "command" mode. A dragon's instincts and mentality lends easily to strategy and complex planning, and because of this, Jason's innate ability to analyze situations from multiple angles becomes his greatest asset. He can quickly evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of both allies and enemies, extracting valuable insights that help determine how his team will approach a particular challenge.

Sometimes referred to out of character as his "Nazi general mode", this is the aspect of Jason's personality that was fostered and fueled by Koth Grimseeker, who groomed Jason to be a general in his dragon army. Because of this, Jason most often slips into this mode by accident or even habit, and almost exclusively when commanding his dragons, though it can appear at other times he takes a leadership role. In this mode, Jason is as sharp and focused as in his "work mode", but it takes on a more authoritative, no-nonsense tenor, and it can often appear aggressive or even hostile. This is one of two modes, along with the aforementioned work mode, in which Jason's dragon side shines through more clearly.

Jason takes challenges to and questioning of his orders badly in this state, and generally is unafraid to berate the target of this annoyance. He gives the air that his orders are to be followed, without question, and one who does not do this will be punished. However, unless truly pressed, Jason usually isn't in this state long enough to do much about it, and often challenging him will prompt a mode switch to better deal with the problem.

Leaving this mode almost always causes Jason's self-hatred to flare, as in the aftermath he is reminded of his past and the atrocities he committed while commanding Koth's forces. Many of his past actions are considered blatant war crimes by most civilizations, including that of Euthora's humans, and Jason tends to think of himself as a monster to be killed or, at the very least, a danger to be locked away. This is despite the logical knowledge and assurances that Jason cannot be held accountable for his actions under Koth's command, as he was quite literally being mind controlled, but naturally his emotions and guilt don't care about this fact.

A mode that came to be when Jason was learning how to be a vampire after being turned by Mirah in the first arc of Now and Always, the "predator" mode is marked by near-feral urges to attack, feed, kill, and gain new forms in the process. This mode is typically switched into purely by accident on Jason's part, though it may be fostered by a third party such as Mirah herself. Whether Jason is aware he's in this mode or not, or even if he's capable of rational thought to begin with, is heavily determined by the situation and how he enters the mode in the first place.

Jason initially has poor control over his vampirism and the instincts that come with it, and has a tendency to go feral when he feeds, requiring an outside force to pull him back into sanity. This outside force is usually Jude, who tends to have the most success bringing Jason back to his senses, though if he's still mostly aware, someone else such as Mirah can pull him out. However, rare circumstance when Jason is fully feral-- little more than an animal in terms of awareness and rational thought-- even Jude struggles to bring him back. In this situation, the best way to bring Jason back into his right mind is to knock him out, either by force or by sedation. Upon reawakening, Jason will be back to normal, at the expense of not remembering what happened while he was feral.

Although it's marked by a tendency to go feral, Jason can be in this mode while still fully aware. His demeanor in this mode is, of course, predatory, and he tends to grow hungry quickly. However, being in this state while not actively hunting is usually the result of being riled up by a third party-- Mirah, of course, but Sarkiri government labcoats were able to achieve this when Jason was in captivity in one of their medical facilities.

Seen intermittently at first after Jason loyalty-bonded to Jude, this mode is seemingly exclusive to interactions with the Lycan, and one of the rare situations where Jason is genuinely happy and content. As Jude represents safety to the Shapeshifter, Jason appears to only enter "pet" mode when with him. He seems to get this side of himself from the culture of where he grew up: in Durasken, Euthora, Shapeshifters are seen as subhuman, intelligent animals, at best seen as a novelty pet that can converse with its owner. Having grown up in a culture where this was the accepted viewpoint, it seems to have cemented itself in Jason's psyche, and is only amplified by the instinctive loyalty-bond.

See Trivia for information on the loyalty bond.

This is less a mode, and more a modifier. As a Type E vampire, Jason has the ability to "detach", or to temporarily shut off his emotions in order to approach things with a clear head and without interference. His personality in this state becomes neutral, direct, matter-of-fact, but is still heavily affected by what mode he's in. Moreover, he can switch modes while detached, which can be either a good or bad thing depending on the situation and what mode he switches to.

Most often, while detached, Jason is either in his normal mode or his work mode; the former to gain a reprieve from his volatile emotions and anxiety as a form of psychological self-defense, and the latter to push emotional interference aside and focus on what needs to be done. In these cases, while his change in demeanor might be unnerving to those not expecting it, it's generally a good thing and means he's either trying to get a grip on himself or is avoiding distraction and trying to focus.

However, Jason has also been detached while in his command and predator modes, and it is these cases where detachment becomes dangerous. Normally, while in command mode, Jason's own discomfort at his behavior will often push him out of that mode before he can do anything regrettable, but while detached, this discomfort doesn't exist. This means that he is prone to acting as he sees fit without regard for others, or even his future emotional state. Meanwhile, in predator mode, his bond with Jude is the most effective thing at pulling him out-- and it becomes far less effective when the emotions of the bond are turned off.

At present, Jason is only barely able to turn detachment on and off at will, and it is usually an involuntary psychological reaction.

APPEARANCE

HUMAN FORM

In his semi-default human form, Jason is naturally lanky, tall, and wiry in frame, made more prominent by being underweight for the first twenty-five years of his life. Standing at 6'1", in this form he is pale-skinned, with unkempt black hair of short-medium length. His bangs grow partially in front of his face rather than to the side, meaning it can sometimes get in the way, and there is a distinctive cowlick near the top of his skull. His hair is coarse in texture with very slight feathering near his ears, growing shorter and rougher on the back of his head where it meets the neck.

The one part of this form that doesn't look completely human at first glance is the fact that his eyes glow. With his irises a sharp emerald green, and the surrounding skin fairly pale, the glow isn't immediately apparent unless the lighting conditions allow for it to be seen more easily, such as if the ambient light is dim or if Jason is standing in shadow. However, on closer inspection, there is one more aspect of his appearance that shows he isn't human: the very faint silvery markings that only manifest on his already-fine body hair. Though these markings are more prominent in his other forms, where his primary color is much more widespread, the signature arrows under his eyes and the "fingerless sock" markings on both his arms and legs are just barely visible under close inspection, with the sparse hair in those areas being silver rather than black.

Jason's body is riddled with scars from past injuries, and in human form these show as slightly-lighter patches of skin. The scars sometimes slightly alter in size and location when he shifts, but not their type or general shape. Most of these scars are concentrated on the left side of his body, for seemingly no reason, but potentially influenced by Jason being right-handed and thus trying to avoid damage on that side.

In terms of clothing, Jason unequivocally prefers dark and desaturated colors, as brighter colors can hurt his eyes under direct light. Most often, this means he dresses in shades of black, dark gray, and dull blue, though he does sometimes like white or lighter gray accents. His clothing hangs somewhat loose on his body, as if several sizes too large, due to his thin frame. Jason generally doesn't care about the material and make of his clothing, as long as he can move easily in it.

DARKWING FIREDRAKE FORM

In contrast to his other forms being generally on the leaner, lighter side, Jason's primary dragon form-- and, indeed, his true base form-- is a bulkier, heavier species of dragon called a Darkwing Firedrake. Standing at a quadrupedal 7'5" at the withers, easily 35' long from snout to tailtip with a wingspan of at least 70', this is one of Jason's largest and strongest forms. His scars are even more prominent in this form, manifesting as visible patches of scaleless hide, exposing the dark gray skin underneath. Additionally, he has an extra scar on his left wing forearm that only presents in six-limbed forms.

Like all forms but his human form, Jason's coloration is a striking, stark black-and-silver, with bold markings which-- in this form, at least-- are somewhat reflective. His tail sports the signature double tail rings of all Firedrake subspecies, made of the same leathery, tough material that his ventral scutes are composed of. His scales are sharp, slightly serrated, and a dully metallic black, only adding to the contrast of the bright and shiny silver that his markings carry.

Down his head and neck, ending at his shoulders, is a flexible sail for emoting and aerodynamic purposes. Framing this sail are two pairs of metallic silver horns that carry a distinctive shape, as well as a short, low-lying black crest at the top of his skull where the sail begins. Jason's snout is short, slightly beaked like almost all Euthoran dragons (to better grip struggling prey), with a short spike on his chin and spikes at his jawline, as well as above his eyes. These all come together to protect his head from impact or the bite of another dragon. His eyes have narrow pupils which are able to contract to slits or widen to circles depending on both mood and lighting conditions.

The most prominent part of any Darkwing Firedrake is the heavy, four-pronged tail club made almost entirely of bone and Mythril. Though this is meant to primarily be a blunt-force weapon, the backward-facing spikes allow him to use it both as a piercing weapon and as a rudimentary grappling hook-- Jason is able to use the barbed tail to cling to uneven, near-vertical surfaces for stability. The club is supported by a heavily muscled tail, which is attached to equally-muscular haunches. In fact, most of a Darkwing's muscle mass is in the tail and hind legs rather than the wings and shoulders, making them slow fliers but impressive jumpers.

LYCAN FORM

With a height of 6'11" or so, Jason's Lycan form is one he is particularly comfortable in and can often be seen as, especially on Ferona. Though the exact morph is derived entirely from exposure to Jude and is thus an arctic wolf, it bears a striking, almost uncanny resemblance to his Sulsian wolf form-- which isn't even from the same planet. Because of this, his morph is difficult to pin down on a purely visual level, as Euthora's wolves-- those of the Lupulix genus-- are fairly fox-like in appearance. Thus, locals on Ferona have explicitly asked what morph this form was, with guesses ranging from wolf, to silver fox, to jackal, to husky. Aside from one being quadrupedal and the other being bipedal, the main visual difference between his Lycan and wolf forms is that his sclerae are black in wolf form.

His coat is thick and plush, but with some coarseness where it's thinnest. Jason has been frequently described as "scruffy" in this form, with bits of unruly fur on his head and joints sticking out in seemingly arbitrary amounts. He does not have any head hair aside from his fur, making him considered "bald" to Feronites. His fur is longest and thickest on his tail, which only further adds to the confusion of his morph, as it is decidedly more fox-like than wolf-like. His claws are short, sharp, and black, and usually extended.

Jason's scars are less visible in this form than the other two detailed here, but they are still visible. In most cases, they are partially obscured by his pelt, appearing thinner or smaller at a glance, unless one brushes the fur aside to see the extent of the damage. The exception to this is the one on his throat, where Mirah bit him, which is entirely obscured by thick silver-white fur as a natural consequence of wolf anatomy. In fact, any parts of his scars which cross into the large silver area of fur on his front and inner thighs are hidden due to the fur here growing thicker. The only one which is entirely hidden is the one on his throat, but the scars on his right thigh and left side are subject to partially being hidden.

Jason finds clothing to be an irritation in this form, and prefers to wear the bare minimum for what is socially acceptable: a pair of thin shorts that doesn't press against his fur and make him uncomfortably warm. As such, most of the time he is at least shirtless, and when at home will often choose to either not wear anything or not use this particular form.

SHIVEZTEL

Shiveztel is the name given to the entity within the sapphire in Jason's pendant, after he formed his own soul from the shard of Jason's that he was given. Now aware and able to experience true thought and depth of emotion, he remains within the pendant as an extension of Jason's ability to intuit fate, rather than an external force influencing Jason to guide him in a certain direction.

Though "Shiveztel" is actually Jason's real birth name, because of the split of his soul and his transformation into a Shapeshifter from the dragon hatchling that he was, Jason and Shiveztel are different entities of the same person. Shiveztel represents all the draconic aspects of Jason's nature that the Shapeshifter didn't keep, though by way of having the same personality base and Jason having had influence from dragons growing up, both of them have most of these traits.

As an entity in his own right, Shiveztel displays a distinct personality both separate from and similar to Jason's. Both of them are quick to irritate, incredibly tactically-minded, and impetuously stubborn once their minds are set. However, Shiveztel displays more of a dragon's inherent nature as opposed to Jason displaying a Shapeshifter's. Shiveztel is manipulative and far-seeing, navigating and maneuvering both Jason and other people around him into positions that are advantageous to keeping Jason alive. None of this is done with any malice, but rather out of distrust that Jason's allies will hold to his plans rather than trying to make the situation better and instead making it worse. This abates significantly after the epilogue of Now and Always / Arc 1: Ruins of Litaria, where Shiveztel is properly "discovered" by certain members of the Cult of Ustream. This causes his ability to experience and understand emotion to develop completely, as well as providing a means of direct communication between him and Jason.

Shiveztel was split off from Jason's soul by their mother, Vol en-ait Rae, and intentionally given this emotionally-blind nature of only seeing the bigger picture and the eventualities of fate, rather than paying attention to what is happening in the moment. Shiveztel's sole intended purpose was to keep Jason alive at any cost, without regard for Jason's emotional or mental state, as long as it would be "worth it" in the end. Because of this, Shiveztel is both why Jason was taken over by Koth-- as a means to both train his Dracomancy and keep him from falling into a permanent contract of servitude to the Soulseeker-- and why Jason was attacked and transformed into a vampire by Mirah. Although Shiveztel admits that the vampirism was overly hasty on his own part, he stands by his reasoning for delivering Jason to Koth, as he feels the alternative was far worse and he was able to neither navigate Jason around the Soulseeker's contract, nor warn him about the coming danger.

STORY

PRE-SCT

Jason was born as a dragon to Euthora's moon goddess, Vol en-ait Rae, and a male Darkwing Firedrake, Mordicai-Shaiveér. Named at birth as Shiveztel, full name Shikaveztavel, his mother turned him into a Euthoran Shapeshifter with a latent Darkwing Firedrake form locked behind a human base form and left him at the doorstep of a single father Shapeshifter, a man named Kaltai Turris, who lived in Jierno, Durasken. Here he was raised in human society, which treated him as a second-class citizen for being a Shapeshifter, and taught him that dragons-- and thus Dracomancers, those who could command dragons through a genetic power-- were dangerous creatures to be feared and killed.

At age ten, Jason was exploring the foothills outside his city when he stumbled across a Stormfire dragon named Stormshaper. When the dragon thought it had acquired a free meal, Jason's latent Dracoimpery activated and he took control of Stormshaper in self defense. Because Dracomancers were by law executed on discovery by the Durasken government, and because he was a child who had no idea what else to do, he ran away with his new dragon. They roamed southern Durasken for a month or so, then ran across another aggressive dragon angry at the intrusion on his territory: the Thunderplate Firedrake Mimring Thunderscale. There was a short, tiring battle between the two dragons, and Jason ended up panicking as Mimring passed out and was unable to defend himself, using too much "strength" in his Dracomancy and accidentally binding Mimring as a Familiar.

From here, the three of them explored the ranges of southern Durasken and northern Arseyeln, even wandering slightly into southwestern Seotara on occasion, for a handful of years. They picked up more dragons, the crippled hybrid of unknown heritage Fricai, and the Shadow Drake Deathstorm. There was a brief incident in which Mimring was fatally wounded by another dragon, and in order to save him, Jason promised his soul to a Reaper... only to later renege on the deal and flee. Eventually, when Jason was fifteen, he met a man named Lord X-Giga-X, settled in an abandoned military outpost in Ustream-- a valley in northwestern Arseyeln-- and officially founded the group that would later be named the Cult of Ustream.

Cult of Ustream was a tumultuous era for Jason, filled with stresses, strife, betrayal, and world-ending threats. It formed his incredibly disrupted youth, as the events of this period of Jason's life left absolutely no room to breathe or step away to process. Although Jason forged friendships that would then go on to last for years, and took in strays, lost wanderers, and injured runaways, he would by and large keep to himself, and butted heads with several people including Giga with increasing frequency over the months. The Cult was forced to deal with problem after problem, crisis after crisis, and Jason slowly fell apart over the course of these events.

Tensions came to a head when the overlapping problems got to be too much for Jason to keep a handle on, and he made an impulsive decision about something that he and Giga had particularly disagreed over. Giga had accidentally taken partial control of Deathstorm when the Cult initially formed, and this arrangement was kept for ease of communication across a distance, but the two Dracomancers did not see eye-to-eye on how to treat the dragon. Eventually Jason freed Deathstorm through use of a Dracomancy failsafe-- telling Deathstorm to "obey nobody but yourself" in order to overload the connection and break it. Following this, he made Deathstorm his second Familiar to protect him. Giga later retaliated against Jason by killing Stormshaper, briefly kidnapping Deathstorm's son, and crippling one of Mimring's wings.

This marked the start of Jason's true unraveling, and as the problems in Ustream grew more severe, made him feel like he was forced to find another dragon who was able to fly to pick up the slack. He found Razhius, an unwilling dragon whose name spoke of dishonor in the Drakine language and should have been an immediate red flag, but Jason wasn't in the mindset to recognize it. In the process of berating himself for having to take an unwilling dragon, he said something that made Deathstorm angry, and it was a short one-sided argument that led to Deathstorm withdrawing and Jason temporarily shutting down his psychic links with his dragons in distress. Because he was no longer paying attention to his dragons, Jason didn't notice Razhius approaching a man named Koth Grimseeker, a very powerful Dracoimperist with an army of dragons run like a real cult.

On Koth's orders, Razhius led Jason into an ambush, where the latter was captured, effectively kidnapped, and subjected to mental torture for about a week before being allowed to return to the Cult's HQ, though he was under enforced orders to tell no one what had happened. Following this, every moment of Jason's life had Koth in his head, breaking him, slowly brainwashing and converting him, keeping Jason's mental defenses weakened through lack of sleep and having not a single moment of peace. It later turned out that Koth only let Jason go early because the local Hellspace, which Jason had reneged on a deal with, wanted Jason mostly whole for their own purposes, and soon Demons, Reapers, and Arbitrators appeared to collect on that deal. With the help of Destiny, Jack, and a few others, Jason was able to escape this particular trap, only for Koth-- no longer obligated to stay out of it-- slammed his willpower into Jason's mind, ultimately outing him and forcing Jason to flee back to the Altar.

Now that Koth was able to do what he wished with Jason at full strength, he quickly worked the Shapeshifter over, grooming him into being a general of his army to assist in commanding Koth's growing forces. He trained Jason and Mimring, assisting the latter in developing his Photon Dragon technique, and desensitized Jason to the violence of warfare by appealing to the dragon within him, who craved hierarchy, structure, and destruction. Over time, Jason grew so shattered and brainwashed that he became a willing, loyal servant to Koth, rapidly losing any sense of self he had while simultaneously believing Koth's insistence that Jason was to blame for anything bad that happened to anyone around him, not just himself. It was his fault he let Razhius betray him, his fault that a dragon died because he didn't do anything, his fault that they hadn't won the war yet because he wasn't being aggressive enough. All of this caused Jason's self-blame to fester into genuine self-hatred, which he could only ever express through aggression, whether to others or to himself.

Jason grew so completely converted and brainwashed that the Cult and associated coaligned groups-- the Station and Organization G-X-- were forced to weigh whether or not it was worth trying to recapture and reprogram him, or if he was too far gone and had become too much of a threat to save. Though people were divided on this, there was one skirmish between the two sides that forced their hand: Jason willingly and happily killed Bophez, the Station's leader, when he wasn't even ordered to, and he enjoyed it. Now the coalition was forced to face the idea that if Jason could not be recaptured, he had to be killed, because he was starting to be too much to handle; he was getting stronger, smarter, and more willing to kill. Then-leader of the Cult, Shadow, convinced most of the others to allow one more chance at capture, before trying to kill him.

This led to the defining moment in the friendship between Jason and Jude: following a plan set in motion months in advance by Jason's pendant, Jude found Jason's bow-- one enchanted specifically to shoot down dragons-- and raced to head off an approaching Jason backed by a section of Koth's forces, coming to attack and destroy HQ in the night to get the Cult out of Ustream. Although HQ was destroyed in the end, Jude had managed to shoot down his friend, allowing others who had also opted to save him the opportunity to restrain and capture him while they left to a temporary base of operations. Here, Jason was effectively caged, forcibly freed from Koth by Giga using the exact same failsafe Jason had on Deathstorm, and went seemingly catatonic for a few days before his body forced him out of that state before his mind was ready. Filled with rage hiding his overwhelming fear, Jason was put in Hammerspace for the sake of his mental health by Jude, who was able to very slowly get closer to Jason and give him someone to finally trust again. It was a slow recovery after this point, but Jason was eventually able to rejoin the Cult for the final battle against Koth, where he served as aerial tactical support, and then aided the coalition in fending off the final, catastrophic threat of the canon: Ace of Spaces, who planned to destroy the planet in the wake of firing a weapon at reality itself.

NOW AND ALWAYS: INTERLUDE

WARNING: This section references events that are still ongoing and may change dramatically over time. While still canon, it is still in flux and therefore should be treated as unreliable.

EIGHT-YEAR GAP

Set eight years after the events of Cult of Ustream, the first arc of Now and Always focuses on the developing and powerful bond between Jason and Jude, which ultimately leads into Jason becoming Jude's Familiar and legal son. It also develops and addresses the mental health problems of both, some of which they share and others of which are unique to one or the other. Other characters appear and take large roles, but ultimately this canon is about Jason and Jude rather specifically, and so plotlines will heavily lean toward one or both.

RUINS OF LITARIA

In the first arc of the canon, dubbed Ruins of Litaria, Jack comes to Numidium House to ask Jason and Jude for assistance in investigating the assassination of his adoptive father. Very long story made short, the three of them, along with a handful of others, end up going to Ceskion to investigate and foil the plans of the Sarkiri. While there, Mirah begins hunting Jason as prey, eventually cornering and attacking him in an old temple in the jungle, nearly killing him, triggering his long-developing psychosis into his first psychotic episode, and ultimately turning Jason into a new strain of vampire, dubbed Type E. Through this chain of events, Jason forms a second Shapeshifter loyalty-bond with Jude, who in turn develops a Lycan bond of protection with Jason. Throughout this arc, Jason and Jude both contend with Jason's worsening mental health, kidnapping and torture, and Jason's control issues in learning how to be a vampire.

CULT OF USTREAM: GEN 2

WARNING: This section references events that are still ongoing and may change dramatically over time. While still canon, it is still in flux and therefore should be treated as unreliable.

Jason appears as a cameo character in the beginning of Gen 2 and is the father of Tobias and Mimi Shaver. At this point, around twenty-five years after the events of Cult of Ustream, he is quite fully Jude's Familiar and odd sort of assistant, while simultaneously also being the Lycan's legal son and thus Alexis Numidius's legal brother, though socially he acts more like a brother and uncle respectively.

QUOTES

"We aren't a very cohesive group at all, we just sort of gathered here. But I was the one who found the building, and the others seem to listen to what I have to say, so I guess that does make me an unofficial leader of sorts."
To Ziolang, Laser Tag Demon

"Listen, Kuro, we can do this one of two ways. Either you let everyone go, including my friend, and walk out of here alive, or Mimring here kills you, and everyone is freed anyway."
To Drake Kuro, "CoU3"

"You are a dragon. Act like one."
To Deathstorm, Threat Assessment (2/2)

"I can't keep the act up all day, every day. I try not to let you guys see it, but it's tiring to smile and act like everything's fine all the time."
To Shadow, Drinking Scene

"Yeah. All anyone can ever do is try. A lot of things are hit-and-miss... In my case, though, I can't make a mistake. I can't afford to. Because if I get used to making minor mistakes day-to-day, I'm liable to slip up and make a mistake when it actually matters, and someone could get injured, or killed, or worse."
To Shadow, Drinking Scene

"I couldn't kill him. [...] I'd threatened him so many times. He was dangerous. I had him. The opportunity was right there... And in the end, I stopped. I couldn't."
To Destiny, Healing

"I'm doing the best I can. I make mistakes. I try to fix them. I guess my best isn't good enough. All I tried to do was help a friend whose wellbeing I thought was in danger. And look at all that's come of it."
To Deathstorm, Saranyu

"Look, Zio... the others don't need to trust you. Mimring will vouch for you having my approval. They don't need to trust you, as long as you're here. Something's going to happen. Something bad. And I want the Cult to have the extra security. I can't guarantee I can stop it. I can't guarantee I... If such a threat that I can't deal with pops up and endangers the Cult... I need someone to step up who can. And I need that someone to dispose of that threat however necessary."
To Ziolang, WHAT IS HAPPENING

"It may not look like much, but an archer needs his hands to be in perfect condition. Take pride in that, Zio. You've permanently assured that I will not be firing my bow again."
To Ziolang, WHAT IS HAPPENING

"I'm afraid I've been told to stay alive."
To unknown, The Debt 2

"If there's anything I learned from how... he ran things, it's that our power isn't just one chain, it's a network of them. I'm offering to join our networks."
To Lord X-Giga-X, Epilogue

"I dunno, it's like... I grow up one species, suddenly I end up being a different species, I was raised to act human, but every instinct in me tells me not to do that, and even those instincts changed, so how am I supposed to know they're right? I just don't... I'm too many things, and none of them feel right. Hell, apparently I'm not even using my real name!"
To Jude, Chapter 1

"Huh. I wonder...
... if this is what it feels like to die."
Thought to himself, Chapter 12

"About... eight years ago, I did some pretty terrible things. At first I did them because I was forced to, but then I started doing them because I wanted to. And there's nothing I regret more than that period of my life. I see the aftermath of it every time I'm in Ustream, every time I visit one of the refugee cities, every time a wild dragon recognizes who I am. Jude saved me from myself. Without him, I would be dead. If not my body, then my self. Even when everyone else had given up on me, even when I had given up on myself, he never stopped looking for a solution."
To Mirah, Chapter 17

"No matter what, I always seem to go back to... to hating myself. I don't know how to stop."
To Mirah, Chapter 32

"I'm a dragon, it's wired into us to either chase or flock to power. But "angry" was kind of my default back then. Did Jude tell you how much rage he felt from me when he finally got me back? That rage never went away. It just redirected itself."
To Mirah, Chapter 37

"I'm just decent at making myself seem put together, really. You have Jude to thank for a lot of it."
To Mirah, Chapter 37

"So he had me lead his forces, he gave me orders to relay, he had me plan attacks and raids. We razed cities, terrorized humans. We took dragons, willing or unwilling, and made perfect use of their particular abilities. And over time, he convinced me that I belonged in his army, convinced me that I was born for the role. Because what is a dragon other than raw destruction, fierce cunning, and master strategy? I couldn't argue his point, because I'd vowed not to fight him anymore. More than that, I couldn't argue because I believed him. The dragon in me was reveling in it all. The smell of burning flesh, the thick scent of smoke in the air, the sense of power that came from knowing that I had caused all that, whether directly or by deploying the forces he trusted me with. The dragon enjoyed it all. I enjoyed it all, and there was no point in denying it, because Koth and his army were all I had left."
To Mirah, Chapter 37

"Shadow, Jude, Jack, a few others... they all thought they could still save me. Everyone else? To them, I was too far gone, and more than that, I was a threat. I had killed one of them, and I hadn't even been told to. I just did it because he was there, he was in the way, and I wanted to. Suddenly I was a target to capture if possible, but if not, I had to be killed rather than let escape one more time. But at least they were finally taking me seriously."
To Mirah, Chapter 37

"Don't feel bad about it, Mirah. The sorrow, the pity, the sympathy... I'm not worth it."
To Mirah, Chapter 37

"I don't even know what I'm doing, Mirah. I can plan and strategize for combat or infiltration, but the moment the danger is over, the moment the pressure is gone, I'm left in my own head again, and... and I don't want to be there."
To Mirah, Chapter 43

"You've never once given up on me. Why? I was such a threat to everyone, everything. Everyone wanted me dead. Everyone thought I was a lost cause. I thought I was a lost cause. Why didn't you? Why did you go so far out of your way to help someone that had definitely become an enemy? ... Why are you trying so hard to fix something irreparably broken?"
To Jude, Chapter 44

"I'm sorry I'm such a handful, Jude. I know you don't mind it, not really, but I'm still sorry. I don't try to be so difficult and stubborn. It just feels like I've gotten worse and worse this entire mission. Remember when I asked on the first ship if I was even getting better? I can't convince myself that I am."
To Jude, Chapter 44

"Great. We're both broken."
To Jude, Chapter 44

"I'm too dangerous, Jude. I can't be trusted. This is getting worse, and it's only a matter of time before I can't be brought back from whatever this is. Who am I going to kill next? Another ally? A friend? Destiny, you? Mimring? Tobias? We won't always have a literal Demon on hand to fix my mistakes. If-- when-- I kill again, there's not going to be a do-over."
To Jude, Chapter 52

"Comet's afraid of me. Caetius is afraid of me. Hell, I think Dark's afraid of me. Sam and Jack are afraid of what I can do. Mirah's afraid of what she created. You and Mimring are afraid for me. Why do I just... why do I always bring fear? Is it the dragon? Is it Koth's influence? Is it just me?"
To Jude, Chapter 52

"Why is our relationship so complicated, Jude? It's literally never been simple between us. And... and why did you commit to helping me? I don't mean that the way I meant that on the ship. I mean, why me?"
To Jude, Chapter 52

"I don't think I ever apologized for how I acted before all that happened. Every time you tried to help, I turned you away, and I think that's part of why things ended up getting so bad. When the problems were minor, I wouldn't let you help, so when they became major you had no reason to think it'd be any different. [...] I'm not going to promise I won't do that anymore, because I think I'd be lying. But I hope your resolve is stronger than mine, in that case."
To Jude, Chapter 54

"I wish I had as much faith in myself as you guys seem to have in me."
To Jack, Chapter 54

"It's our job to worry about each other. Doesn't mean you have to do it all at once, we have a long time to fill that quota."
To Jude, Chapter 61

"I never said you didn't have a stake. I said you don't get a say. You two took it upon yourselves to act without involving or consulting me. All I'm doing is the same."
To Eschia, Chapter 62

"Frankly, I'm tired of being treated like an unstable child and in the same breath being told I need to make my own decisions. [...] So which is it, Shadow? Do I need others to make my choices for me, or do I need my agency and free will?"
To Shadow, Chapter 62

"One, your savior complex is not my problem, Shadow. It's the one thing that isn't my fault. When, if, I want your help, I will ask for it."
To Shadow, Chapter 64

"And plenty of those atrocities were me, Shadow. I didn't even have the pendant when Koth had me. Every life, every razed town, every refugee that had to settle here for safety, that was me. Every dragon I gave to the fucking Soulseeker, that was me, making the choice to fix my own fuckup to free Deathstorm."
To Shadow, Chapter 64

"So I did what I do best. Sold my soul for a dragon. All Shiveztel did was change the buyer."
To Shadow, Chapter 64

"Hell, I don't feel real half the time. It's making it... hard, you know?"
To Hamza, Chapter 1

"We-- we told you about the whole, uh, Koth thing, right? [...] I think... I think I keep forgetting he's dead."
To Hamza, Chapter 1

"I mean, I didn't have the best upbringing. Left on some guy's doorstep by my asshole of a mother, found out I had an illegal power when I was like ten, ran off, raised by dragons for a few years and then thrown in with my old group out in the middle of nowhere. And that's before Koth came into the picture. I guess all Koth did was make it worse, in some ways, better in others. Still trying to convince myself the bad outweighs the good."
To Hamza, Chapter 1

"I appreciate it, but I don't know you."
To Dennis, Chapter 2

"It's hard to tell it's not real, even though logically I know it can't be him. I can tell myself it's not real all I want, but the voices don't care."
To Hamza, Chapter 12

"I'm an exception to a lot of things."
To Reza, Chapter 15

"You want to talk about being broken ? You know nothing about me, about who I am, what I've been through or what I've done. These scars aren't marks of weakness. They're proof that I was strong enough to survive. And I'll show you just how much strength I have if you don't start staying in line."
To Reza, Chapter 15

HOBBIES

  • Jason can often be seen reading and very occasionally writing. He enjoys reading so much that he has been known to stay awake when he should definitely have been sleeping just to continue consuming Jude's library. Needless to say, not needing to sleep is the best part of being a vampire to him.
  • Even when he doesn't strictly need to burn off the energy, Jason will go out for a quick run or hunt when he's simply bored. Much of the time this just results in him scaring but not killing his prey, since he isn't actually hungry and just needs something to do. This was more common when he was a teenager, but he still gets the urge on occasion. Flying when bored also falls under this.
  • Although his hand injury hinders his dominant hand enough to make him effectively put away his longbow for good, Jason enjoys archery and is good enough at it that he occasionally teaches others proper form, stance, and technique, especially if he sees something that he can correct. He misses it enough that he will sometimes try to take a few shots of his bow either despite the injury, with his brace on, or with his non-dominant hand. His degree of success in these attempts is mixed, but overall poor.
  • His moral compass has corroded enough that Jason will actively seek out dragons with abilities, powers, skills, or traits that he believes will be useful. He doesn't particularly care if these dragons are willing or not, but he does try to leave the unwilling dragons alone until he has need of them. The single exception to this is Comet, who Jason keeps on standby for transportation purposes.
  • As a dragon, Jason has a marked preference for high places to perch. In his youth this manifested as sitting in the upper branches of a particularly favored tree or on the roof of HQ, overlooking Cult territory. This has translated into him finding any reasonably high perch within Hammerspace, including the Great Perch, the ridge behind the forge, and the roof of Numidium House itself.
  • Jason is very physically active, and prefers to stay that way. When in a "home" setting that has any form of exercise room or area, Jason will often use it as an outlet for both energy and aggression, to the point where objects may need to be replaced.

HABITS

  • When in high-energy states, such as when he's anxious, restless, or nervous, Jason is known to keep himself in constant motion. As a teenager this mainly appeared as him pacing, to the point where he was well-known for the habit, but as he grew older this extended to more general fidgeting. When he's thinking hard or turning something over in his head, he tends to tap his foot, look slightly up, and/or cross his arms. Additionally, as a side effect of his antipsychotic medication, Jason has developed general persistent motor restlessness and a motor tic in the form of finger-tapping.
  • Due to being psychologically a dragon, and being raised by dragons from the ages of ten to sixteen, Jason therefore emotes like a dragon, such as head-tilting when confused, growling when annoyed or angry, and seeking comfort or giving affection with face- or head-nudges.
  • Because it was drilled into his head that he's to blame for everything, Jason constantly and automatically apologizes even when he's objectively done nothing wrong, and blames himself even when he's being reassured it wasn't his fault. However, Jason recognizes that this is usually just intrusive thoughts, although that doesn't really help him ignore them.
  • Depending on mood, Jason has a few places and spots he will consistently go to in order to relax. When idle, he tends to select a specific couch in Jude's study to sit or lay down on and read; when overwhelmed or stressed, he usually retreats to his room. When impatient and restless, Jason will select a high perch to watch the area and feel like he's doing something.
  • More common in his mid to late teenage years, and occasional but much rarer as an adult, is Jason's tendency to self-harm. Because of his conflicting instincts on how to emote, and his general inability to understand and express his own emotions, this tends to result in him attacking himself. He will grow claws in his human form, pierce his own skin with those claws, and leave the wounds to hurt and bleed for a while before shifting to heal himself and hide the evidence. He tends to be so secretive with this activity that the only reason anyone other than Mimring found out is because Mirah smelled his blood before he healed.

SKILLS

  • He tries to learn any new skill he can, even if it's not informational or academic. As such, he's fallen easily into the minor stereotype of the Shapeshifter's adaptability making them ideal jacks-of-all-trades, and Jason's skills range from the fairly standard writing and motor capabilities to things that are more niche for his situation, like horse-riding.
  • Though his days of leadership have been willingly put behind him, Jason is a natural-born leader due to his dragon instincts and has an inherent sense for tactics, strategy, and the use of one's forces to achieve the most effective victory. This tends to make him, by default, the main tactician of any group he's been placed into.
  • Jason is skilled enough in archery that, despite not being to shoot effectively anymore with his injured hand, he makes a very good teacher and has been known to correct the form, stance, and techniques of a budding archer when he sees something wrong.
  • He has moderate skill in playing the flute, though this was an activity he exclusively partook in before his capture by Koth Grimseeker, and he hasn't touched the flute since his rescue. It is unknown if his skill level has deteriorated in the years since.
  • Growing up in quite literal wilderness and being raised by dragons, then spending his youth in an abandoned military outpost where he and his allies were forced to fight for their own lives on a semi-regular basis, has made Jason fairly athletic. Though he was already naturally tall and wiry in build, he has kept in shape enough that even in human form he has surprising speed, endurance, and agility.
  • Though he grew up speaking Common, Jason quickly picked up the nuances of Drakine both by instinct and through his own dragons. As such, he is bilingual, and fluent in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding both languages without issue.
  • Because he reads so much and absorbs all the knowledge he can, Jason has a general working knowledge of a wide variety of topics, some of which may be unexpectedly useful. His interests are wide-ranging and far-reaching, but somewhat scattered; he's not an expert by any means, but in matters of topics such as sciences, geography, and ecology, Jason has a solid enough understanding to explain the basics of related matters to other people.
  • Jason has honed his hunting skills to a fine point, and can easily track, ambush, and kill both sapient and nonsapient prey without problem. Though he preferred to run down his prey in a full-tilt chase before he became a vampire, since then he has taken more of a liking to stealth and ambushes, and is scarily good at taking humanoid and draconic prey due to his actual abilities and powers.
  • Due to the injury in his dominant right hand, Jason has been forced to use his left hand enough that, while not perfect, he's begun developing ambidexterity and can use his left hand to write passably, if somewhat skewed. He still doesn't particularly like it, though.

FEARS

  • Jason has rather severe claustrophobia, which is mostly derived from his own instincts, as Shapeshifters inherently dislike enclosed spaces. Though he doesn't have it quite as bad as others of his species, who might injure themselves in an attempt to escape, Jason still gets flighty and nervous in tight spaces, due to lack of maneuverability and his own instincts.
  • Conversely, Jason also experiences a mild form of agoraphobia, manifesting as anxiety when in situations involving a large amount of people or an unfamiliar place, where help may not be readily available if it is required.
  • Though it's mild, Jason also seems to have a fear of people in general, as his ability to deterimine whether something or someone is a threat is permanently broken, telling him that just about every situation presents a potential threat and thus keeping him on guard. He combats this particular response by choosing very specific people to trust near-unconditionally, using their reactions as a basis for how he should be treating a given person or situation.
  • Because he's experienced so much of it throughout his life, Jason has a fear of betrayal and abandonment by those he considers close. He understands that this fear is mostly irrational, but it comes from bitter life experience and is difficult for him to shake.
  • PTSD symptoms present several more fears, though these are less a fear of the specific thing and more the recollection of memories involving them. Included in this set of fears is anxiety around loud noises (as he was tortured using sound by the Sarkiri), reflexive panic when someone touches his neck (due to both the vampire attack he suffered and the very same Sarkiri fastening a collar to his neck with screws), and a panic response when immobilized (due to, again, the vampire attack).
  • As seen inNow and Always / Arc 2: History's Rhymes, Jason's hallucinations can drive him into a panic attack, and his first reaction on "hearing" Koth's voice was fear. It's currently unknown if this is a fear of Koth specifically or a PTSD symptom.

CRIMES

  • Grand Larceny: Broke into a weapons shop at age 10 to steal an enchanted bow before fleeing the city.
  • Breaking and Entering: Same as above.
  • Treason: Several counts, all in the "aiding the enemy" sense. The primary count is the simple crime of existing as an active Dracomancer in Durasken, though all of Jason's actions while allied with Koth would also apply.
  • Unlawful Imprisonment: Several counts, all related to his less-willing dragons such as Fricai, Razhius, and Comet.
  • Trespassing: A few counts when a child, several as an adult. Jason tends to poke into places he's not supposed to be.
  • Threats of Violence: Several counts, generally in the "death threat" category.
  • Assault With a Deadly Weapon: Several counts, involving the stolen bow.
  • Conspiracy: By forming a contract with the Soulseeker to bring the latter dragons so that the Soulseeker would be able to kill them and use their souls. Also with Mirah when planning a hunt.
  • Terrorism: Chief criminal act under Koth's leadership. Involved raiding human settlements and destroying them. Also some counts on Ceskion.
  • Destruction of Property: Same as above, including Cult HQ itself. Also several counts on Ceskion.
  • Murder: Same as above, including Bophez, who he knew personally. Also several counts on Ceskion.
  • War Crimes: General count, including the attacking of civilians, taking hostages, and torture.
  • Enslavement: The fate of most dragons Jason took control of under Koth's orders.
  • Grand Theft Auto: Stealing or helping steal a Sarkiri ship. Twice.
  • Accesory to Crime: Many counts, including assisting Jack in his own cybercrimes, standing guard, retrieving a target, providing recon, etc.
  • Kidnapping: Knocked out a Sarkiri so that it could be abducted.
  • Hostage Taking: Most of the Sarkiri crew on the first stolen ship, as well as a random office worker.
  • Assault: Many, many counts across his life.
  • Harboring a Fugitive: After Sam and Jack freed Caetius from the Sarkiri.
  • Abuse: Much of how he treats Comet, especially the instance of feeding on him.
  • Willful Exposure: Has knowingly bitten multiple people as a vampire, risking (and in some cases causing) the spread of the virus.
  • Aggravated Assault: A few counts, notably towards Reza.

LIKES

  • Jason has the tastes of both a Shapeshifter and a dragon, and so he enjoys very specific "sharp" tastes; mint, wine, metal, and blood are his favorites. Jude often makes him tea using Euthoran mint, which has been known to relax him due to its toxic-to-anyone-who-isn't-a-Shapeshifter qualities.
  • He absorbs knowledge like a sponge, so he likes learning new things. He likes learning about literally everything he can. It's a bit of a problem. This leads to him questioning a lot of things other people would just go along with, and trying to learn everything there is to know about a topic that's particularly stricken his interests.
  • Despite his dislike of loud noise, Jason enjoys music in general, as part of his dragon psychology. In particular, he likes calm and soothing music, especially Jude playing the piano.
  • Related to Jason's love of learning is his love of reading, and he'll often be spotted curled up on a cozy chair in the library or study (next to the fireplace, of course) with a book he's interested in. He prefers nonfiction, and has considered writing like Jude.
  • One of Jason's favorite sensations is the freedom of flight, and when stressed and overwhelmed he will often transform into a flight-capable animal such as raven or dragon to burn off some energy and make himself feel better.
  • Another way Jason burns off energy is by hunting, during which he will often enter his wolf form and run down prey such as deer. This mostly happens when he is stressed enough to be angry, and sharply picks up when he becomes a vampire, because he now gains new forms by feeding on the blood of creatures he doesn't already have a form of. This has led into what seems to be an addiction to gaining new forms, even if he never uses them.
  • Jason enjoys peace and quiet, and seems to outright have made a hobby of finding new places to have it.

DISLIKES

  • Because of his incredible senses, Jason detests loud noises and bright lights, as well as anything else that is particularly harsh to his enhanced senses.
  • Jason is easily overwhelmed by too much activity and too much information and sensory stimulation around him, and thus dislikes crowds and bustling cities.
  • He is extremely claustrophobic and may panic if in a confined space for too long, potentially injuring himself in his attempts to get free. As he grows older he gains more of a handle on this.
  • Having developed a bad habit of downplaying and bottling his emotions, as well as his psyche actively repressing traumatic memories, Jason hates being forced to relive and address his painful past and his true emotions, even if it's for the purposes of processing them.
  • Because his default state is "anxious energy", Jason is restless by nature and detests being idle or at rest for too long, especially when there's something he needs or wants to get done. Staying in this state for too long can actually cause stress.
  • The events Jason took part in on Ceskion have given him an intense dislike of Sarkiri in general, though he recognizes that not all Sarkiri are psychopathic and that this dislike comes primarily from bad experiences.
  • The brainwashing that Jason suffered in his teenage years gave him a bit of a split personality, which he internally refers to as "modes". One such mode is that of the cult-army general position that Koth groomed him into, where he becomes commanding, harsh, and sharp, but also keenly intelligent and aware of details. He hates going into this mode because of the bad memories and self-hatred it brings, but conversely hates even more having his orders even remotely questioned or challenged when in said mode.
  • Sadly, the thing Jason hates most tends to be himself. During his tenure as a general in Koth's dragon army, Jason committed several actions which would be considered war crimes by humans, many of his own volition, and many of which he couldn't help but enjoy. In his mind, he has committed too much evil of his own free will to consider himself anything other than a monster.

TRIVIA

  • Jason ages much more slowly than he should, due to not only being a dragon, but having a fixed lifespan of about five thousand years due to being a demigod. Because of this, none of his forms seem to age past their prime; for example, he appears to stop aging in his late 20s in human form. Perhaps also because of this, despite his particular species of dragon being one which never stops growing, his size seems to hit a hard limit (currently undefined).
  • Because of where he was born and raised before running away from home, Jason has the equivalent of a very light Irish accent, which has mostly faded with time. He currently has what amounts to a "middle-of-nowhere" accent, with very faint traces of Irish, Drakine, and whatever accents are used by the people he spends a lot of time around.
  • Jason is sometimes referred to as "Kuda" by Ziolang, as that is effectively the Degol word for "Shapeshifter".
  • Jason is tall, thin, and wiry in frame, and wears light-material clothing so as not to inhibit movement. Unfortunately, his slight build means most of his clothing is annoyingly loose and baggy. Additionally, Jason uses magic to make his clothing form-specific, so he doesn't have to worry about shredding or losing whatever he has on because there was an emergency.
  • Jason carries himself with a somewhat wild, feral bearing, though it's more of a vibe he gives off than any particular movement or posture. His eyes are luminous and slightly reflective, like a cat's, and in all forms carry a strange spark of intelligence and awareness that signal that somebody is "home". When he goes truly feral, this spark vanishes.
  • In Jason's Feral State, a last-ditch defense mechanism in Shapeshifters (not to be confused with going feral as a vampire), Jason's eyes turn amber-yellow and his markings are replaced by glowing blue tribal-style streaks and stripes that snake around his body. The hallmark tell that Jason is entering this state is a ring of amber forming around the outside of his iris.
  • Jason uses aggression and anger as a shield to avoid having to feel pain and fear. Most of the time, if he has an angry outburst, or is irritated for seemingly no reason, it's likely that he's actually afraid or hurt.
  • Jason's favorite colors are silver, black, and dark blue, in that order. He also likes white, teal, and green.
  • He probably likes taking care of plants. Easier than taking care of a kid, at least. The Ferona estate he and Jude live in part-time is full of plants, both indoor and outdoor, especially ferns and succulents.
  • In quadrupedal forms, Jason has a very slight limp on his front right leg, especially if he puts too much weight on it. This is nearly unnoticeable otherwise.
  • The "loyalty-bond", which Jason usually refers to as "attachment" when he talks about it, is an unnamed and mostly undocumented phenomenon that happens in sapient Shapeshifters. Because Shapeshifters have a strong loyalty instinct that serves to keep them with one animal group for an extended period of time, those who become sapient are able to understand more complex emotions than their wild brethren, and this instinct can manifest as a powerful, single-targeted bond with one individual. This bond drives the Shapeshifter to protect the target at all costs. Jason is the only known Shapeshifter to have formed two of these bonds concurrently, with the other targeting Mimring.
  • There are four "categories" of this bond, which can overlap: the Partner, the Assistant, the Guardian, and the Charge. Though a bond can form over a long period of time, it takes a singular significant event to cement it, and this event determines what form the bond will take. In this case, Jason's bond with Jude is mostly the Charge with hints of the Assistant, while his bond with Mimring is mostly the Partner with traces of the Guardian.
  • Jason has a "counterpart" in the Nemesis canon named Kiryu. Kiryu can be described as sort of if Jason had been created in 2020 instead of 2010, as the pair follow many of the same themes and have multiple parallels, both intentional and unintentional, only focusing on different aspects of those themes.
  • In the Manaverse's Fate-based roleplay, Fate/LunaTerra, Jason is summoned as the Servant Rider... and subsequently kills his initial Master for not taking him seriously, ending up with a new Master, Kalonia Ralston.
  • Jason is one of my oldest characters! He's loosely based on one of my DnD 3.5e Ranger characters, who could turn into a wolf and had a Flaming Burst Composite Longbow. His pendant is also based on one I own in real life, though mine is on a chain and not a cord. Jason started entering his current form in about 2010 and has had many changes, tweaks, improvements, and minor rehauls since. He started as a self-insert (it's complicated) and was the first character I could consider a "sona".

HEALTH

PHYSICAL

Though Jason is in rather good physical health due to both his vampirism staving off any other diseases and his metabolism rapidly breaking down anything that might be toxic to him, he still has some notable issues.

  • For the majority of his youth, up into his mid 20s, Jason is malnourished and underweight due to eating mainly lean, low-fat meats such as rabbit and deer, which meant he burned fat faster than he put it on. More detail can be found in the Diet tab.
  • A litany of scars remain from various old injuries, focused mainly on his left side. Most of these have little effect on him and are mostly just unsightly, a reminder both of his rocky past and the strength it took to survive it.
  • One scar, however, has a noteworthy effect on him. The massive and uneven puncture scar on both sides of his right hand was the result of his claw in dragon form being impaled by Ziolang's sword in his youth, and he refused treatment for it. Years later, the mobility of his right hand is still limited, and causes Jason pain when he tries to move the hand in certain ways.
  • The vampirism is, itself, a physical health issue. The magical disease adapted from the Type A strain of his attacker, Mirah, once it met Jason's aggressive immune system, transforming it into the first documented case of Pure Type E vampirism. This virus has effects on Jason both physically and mentally, with the physical effects ranging from augmented strength and racial abilities to a need to consume blood fairly often, whether from a sapient victim or not.
  • As a side effect of his medication (detailed in its own tab), Jason has a few, generally more minor problems. The most noticeable of these are fine motor tics which mostly manifest as compulsive tapping of his right index finger, and orthostatic hypotension, a lowering of blood pressure on standing up. Jason learns to live with these, though they annoy him.

MENTAL

Far more notable than Jason's physical health concerns are his mental ones. With a past riddled by trauma, abuse, and neglect, Jason's psyche has been molded in a way that he will never quite be whole again-- and he's okay with that, because Jude is there for him. Jason is on medication to manage most of these problems, as well as undergoing therapy.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder. Though Jason has always had some degree of this mostly due to his upbringing, it was only solidified by the traumatic experiences he withstood in his teenage years. Jason's anxiety is targetless most of the time and primarily manifests as nervous energy, which he vents by pacing and moving around.
  • Major Depressive Disorder, and with it, suicidal ideation and self-harming tendencies. This started after his release from Koth's hold on him, though traces of it started long beforehand, including his general self-loathing and feelings of worthlessness.
  • Complex PTSD, in addition to standard PTSD from various events. The C-PTSD comes from the cult-like indoctination and brainwashing that Koth put him through, and the standard PTSD comes from such events as certain battles in his teenage years-- which includes an addled Dark attacking him at one point-- Mirah's attack on him, and his second capture by the Sarkiri. As such, he is extremely touchy about anyone or anything touching his neck, being held in place, and the prospect of a vampire that isn't Jude (and later Mirah) feeding on him, even if it isn't dangerous at the moment.
  • Clinical psychosis. This, in particular, encompasses its own host of symptoms that can't be traced to anything else in particular. Included in this diagnosis are delusions, though Jason understands they aren't real, as long as he's on his medication. He occasionally has hallucinations of any and all senses, commonly manifesting as seeing something in his peripheral vision, tasting metal, or feeling something run up his spine. Jason had his first true episode of psychosis shortly after Mirah attacked and turned him, while he was being forced to relive the repressed memories, but it began forming far earlier, when Jason was under Koth's control. It thus remained latent for almost a decade before being accidentally triggered by Mirah and Jude.
  • Unspecified dissociative disorder; in our world, he would be diagnosed with DDNOS-1b or OSDD-1, depending on the DSM edition used. This began shortly after his rehabilitation by Jude, as a way to compartmentalize the personality that Koth fostered in him, but has grown worse over time into Jason having multiple distinct personalities, or "modes" as he calls them, which may not be intentionally switched to depending on the situation. However, he experiences no amnesia as a side effect of switching, and all of his modes are still Jason, rather than alters.
  • Dependent Personality Disorder, or at the very least, symptoms that suggest it. This is mostly targeted at Mimring, at first, but then switches targets to Jude after the two of them bond, and especially once Mimring dies. Whether or not Jason has DPD itself is questionable, but if nothing else, he shares mutual codependency with both Mimring and Jude, becoming nearly unable to function without them.
  • Intrusive thoughts plague Jason's mind, usually of the self-deprecation variety, though he does sometimes experience sudden thoughts of violence. When at their worst, they often get alleviated by Jude, who can hear Jason's thoughts at will.
  • Jason's phobias include claustrophobia and agoraphobia. The former is instinctive to the Euthoran Shapeshifter, as the species has been known to hurt itself by accident trying to get out of enclosed spaces. The latter is both in the sense of fear of people, and of being in situations where help would not be readily available if needed.
  • Mental side effects of his medication include intermittent drowsiness and a stabilized mood which may not stave off particularly strong emotions completely.
  • Vampirism affects Jason's mind by making him crave the blood of creatures he does not have a form of, giving him a slight addiction to gaining new forms in this way, as well as an inherent aggression towards uninfected Shapeshifters as the virus wants to spread to viable hosts. Additionally, it puts Jason's already unstable emotions on a sensitive hair-trigger.
  • Jason exhibits behaviors and traits consistent with autism and would likely be diagnosed with it in real life. These include stunted social development, hyperfixation on interests, and surprising intelligence in very narrow fields. However, the majority of these are derived from trauma and neglect, rather than simply being neurodevelopmental, therefore Jason is not actually autistic.

DIET

Throughout most of Jason's youth, until about 25 or so, his naturally thin, wiry frame masked the reality that he was, in fact, extremely underweight and malnourished. This was a result of his diet-- Jason's primary food source was deer and rabbits, a high-protein-low-fat diet which his dragons thrived on. However, due to the rapid metabolism of a Shapeshifter, this diet was incompatible with his physiology; though he could still survive on it, he burned fat faster than he could put it on and compensated by hunting far more often than a Shapeshifter would in the wild. The true omnivory of a Shapeshifter means that wild individuals rarely run into this issue, as they eat anything available, including fish and nuts which are high in fat. Though far from the primary cause, this was one of many reasons for Jason's general anxiety and emotional dysregulation in his youth.

This slowly became apparent after he began living on Ferona with Jude-- or, more specifically, when Jason began eating the calorie-rich diet typical to Lycans. Though he remains fairly thin for his height, Jason noticeably filled out and grew into what his build should have been to begin with. His emotional energy has become much healthier since switching to this diet. Jason actively prefers fatty, calorie-dense foods because his body craves fat specifically, and so while he does enjoy general meat and protein, Jude has made sure that any meat Jason regularly eats is well-marbled with fat, or otherwise contains a large amount.

Jason's preferences in food are as such:

  • Meats: Favors deer out of habit, but not "allowed" to have it often, and is encouraged to eat the bone marrow when he does. Otherwise, enjoys pork, cattle, lamb, duck, and salmon. Though he doesn't stray often from this list, he will also eat most other fish, shellfish, rabbit, other livestock options, other types of fowl including chicken, and meats which most people wouldn't consider as part of the menu, such as horse and bear. Any animal is fair game to him, especially in the wild.
  • Snacks: Eggs are by far his favorite. Also enjoys olives, nuts, and cheese.
  • Ingredients: Has a soft spot for butter and mint. Will sometimes eat honey and nut butter, though usually thinks they're too sweet. Enjoys seasonings like rosemary, thyme, sage, and garlic. Enjoys mayonnaise, gravies, and cream-based sauces or dressings when given the chance.
  • Beverages: Absolutely a water supremacist, but also likes milk, tea, and wine. Enjoys savory broths as a drink as well as a soup base.
  • Desserts: Usually, none; Jason doesn't particularly like sweet things. He'll sometimes eat chocolate in small amounts, or light/mild ice creams and similar.
  • Jason is fairly neutral on most edible plants, though he sometimes does enjoy berries, especially those of Euthoran mint. To him, fruits are too sweet, and vegetables are very much secondary to the main protein.
  • Though he will eat bread fairly readily if used as an ingredient or vessel for butter, Jason typically doesn't prefer carbohydrates, including both grains and sugars. This means that he isn't a fan of cakes, crackers, cookies, or pasta, nor is he particularly fond of starches such as potatoes, though he will happily eat any of the listed items if prepared in certain ways.
  • Foods aside, favorite flavors are rich, savory, salty, and minty. Also enjoys sharp/astringent. Not a fan of sour, bitter, spicy, or sweet.

NEUROVEN (Neuroquil, Serenapax, Norexen, Tranquirox)

Neuroven is a potent antipsychotic medication that works by blocking the activity of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain. Its primary mechanism of action is to alleviate symptoms of psychosis, PTSD, anxiety, and depression. However, it also has a range of potential side effects, which can be severe in some cases. The tablet form of Neuroven is small and round, with a slightly rough texture on the surface, and is a pale green color with a slightly speckled appearance. The medication has a distinct bitter smell, which can linger on the patient's breath for a short time after ingestion. The packaging is a standard prescription bottle with a label indicating the medication name, dosage instructions, and other relevant information.

Intended Usage and Effects

Neuroven is intended to alleviate the symptoms of psychosis, PTSD, anxiety, and depression in the patient. It works by blocking the activity of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain. The medication is expected to provide relief from the patient's symptoms within a few days of initiation of treatment.

Neuroven can also be used as a mood stabilizer in non-psychotic disorders, and is very rarely prescribed as a sleep aid in patients with anxiety.

Side Effects and Complications

  • Extreme drowsiness or sedation
  • Development of motor or verbal tics
  • Impaired cognition or memory
  • Increased risk of diabetes or
    metabolic syndrome
  • Abnormal movements, such as tremors or dystonia
  • Prolonged QT interval
  • Akathisia
  • Neuroleptic malignant syndrome
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Tardive dyskinesia
  • Cardiac arrhythmias

Dosage and Intake

Neuroven is available in tablet form and is taken orally. The dosage and frequency of intake of Neuroven depend on the patient's age, medical history, and severity of symptoms. Patients are typically started on a low dose of the medication, which is gradually increased over several days until the optimal dose is achieved. The recommended dosage range for Neuroven is 5-30mg/day, taken once daily or in divided doses. It is a prescription-only medication and should be taken only under the supervision of a licensed healthcare provider.

Addendum: As a Euthoran Shapeshifter, this particular patient is tachymetabolic, and thus the dosage must be increased to account for this. The accepted conversion rate from human to Shapeshifter is four times the dose at double the frequency; the patient was initially prescribed 20mg/6 hours rather than the instructed 5mg/12 hours, and this dose was later gradually increased to 30mg/6 hours.

Discontinuation and Contraindications

Discontinuing Neuroven should be done gradually under the guidance of a healthcare provider to avoid withdrawal symptoms. Abrupt discontinuation may cause anxiety, insomnia, nausea, and vomiting. Patients should follow the dosage guidelines provided by their healthcare provider, and only discontinue the medication under their supervision.

The following should not be combined with Neuroven:

  • Other sedatives, such as benzodiazepines, opioids, and barbiturates, can enhance the sedative effects of Neuroven and increase the risk of respiratory depression.
  • Alcohol and other central nervous system depressants can also potentiate the sedative effects of Neuroven and increase the risk of overdose.
  • Monoamine oxidase inhibitors (MAOIs) can interact with Neuroven and cause a hypertensive crisis.
  • Antihistamines and anticholinergics can cause additive sedative effects when used with Neuroven.
  • Stimulants, such as amphetamines and cocaine, can counteract the sedative effects of Neuroven and increase the risk of agitation, anxiety, and cardiovascular side effects.
  • Certain antibiotics, such as erythromycin and clarithromycin, can inhibit the metabolism of Neuroven and increase the risk of toxicity.
  • Grapefruit juice can inhibit the metabolism of Neuroven and increase the risk of toxicity.

Overdose

An overdose of Neuroven can occur if the patient continues to take high doses of the medication over an extended period. This can lead to an accumulation of the medication in the body, resulting in higher-than-intended levels of the drug. The effects of an overdose of Neuroven can be severe and life-threatening. The specific symptoms can vary depending on the individual, but common effects of an overdose may include:

  • Extreme sedation or coma
  • Profound motor or verbal tics
  • Severe tremors or dystonia
  • Worsening of cardiac arrhythmias
  • Hypotension or shock
  • Delirium or confusion
  • Seizures or convulsions
  • Respiratory depression or failure

In severe cases, an overdose of Neuroven can lead to coma or death. It is essential to seek immediate medical attention if you suspect an overdose of this medication. Treatment may involve supportive care, such as airway management, oxygen therapy, and intravenous fluids. In some cases, antidote medications or gastric lavage (stomach pumping) may be necessary to remove the medication from the body.

To avoid the risk of overdose, patients should always take Neuroven exactly as prescribed by their healthcare provider and should not increase their dosage without medical supervision. If a patient experiences any adverse effects or concerns about their medication, they should speak with their healthcare provider before making any changes to their treatment regimen.

AGITROL

Agitrol is a fast-acting derivative of Neuroven designed for the rapid sedation of agitated or aggressive patients. Like Neuroven, it is an atypical antipsychotic with a potent dopamine antagonist effect. However, Agitrol is formulated as an intramuscular injection, which allows for rapid absorption and onset of action. It is a liquid medication that comes in a pre-filled syringe for easy administration. The liquid is clear and odorless, with a slightly viscous texture. The syringe has a safety cap to prevent accidental injection and a plunger for easy administration, and the packaging is a small box that contains instructions for use and any necessary warnings or precautions. The box also includes a label indicating the medication name and other relevant information.

Intended Usage and Effects

Agitrol is intended to rapidly calm and sedate an agitated or aggressive patient, reducing the risk of harm to themselves or others. The medication works by blocking the activity of dopamine, serotonin, and norepinephrine in the brain, producing a calming effect.

After an injection of Agitrol, the patient is expected to become rapidly sedated and experience a reduction in agitation and aggressive behavior. The onset of action is typically within a few minutes, and the effects can last for several hours. The patient may feel drowsy or groggy and may have difficulty with coordination or balance. It is important to monitor the patient's vital signs, including blood pressure, heart rate, and respiratory rate. The patient may require assistance with mobility, and should not operate machinery or drive until the effects of the medication have worn off. Agitrol is intended for emergency tranquilization and should not be used as a routine medication.

Side Effects and Complications

The warning label on the prescription label should be taken seriously and followed to avoid potential complications. Side effects of Agitrol may be more frequent and severe than those of Neuroven, and can include:

  • Extreme drowsiness or sedation
  • Abnormal movements, such as tremors or dystonia
  • Akathisia
  • Orthostatic hypotension
  • Cardiac arrhythmias
  • Impaired cognition or memory
  • Increased risk of diabetes or metabolic syndrome
  • Prolonged QT interval

Dosage and Intake

Agitrol is intended for use only in psychiatric hospitals or other facilities that specialize in the treatment of mental illness. It is available only to trained medical personnel for the purpose of non-lethally subduing a dangerous patient. The recommended dose of Agitrol is 5-10mg, administered as an intramuscular injection. The injection can be given to a moving, struggling target, allowing for rapid sedation and control of the situation.

Discontinuation and Contraindications

Because Agitrol is intended for use in emergency situations, there is no need for gradual discontinuation. However, patients who receive Agitrol should be monitored closely for adverse effects and provided with appropriate follow-up care.

Illegal Drug Trade

As a highly potent sedative, Agitrol has a high potential for abuse, and its unauthorized use can lead to addiction and other negative outcomes. Commonly known as "Knockout" or "Dream Drip" on the street, it is known to have the following effects when illegally obtained and administered:

  • Physical dependence: Continued use of Agitrol can lead to physical dependence, which is characterized by withdrawal symptoms when the drug is stopped. Withdrawal symptoms can include anxiety, restlessness, insomnia, and seizures, among others. Dependence can increase the likelihood of continued drug use, leading to addiction.
  • Psychological dependence: Agitrol is a powerful sedative, and its calming effects can be highly addictive to individuals with underlying psychological issues such as anxiety or stress. Unauthorized users may become psychologically dependent on the drug to cope with stress, leading to addiction.
  • Street value: Agitrol is a highly sought-after drug in the illicit market due to its potency, and the potential for abuse and addiction increases its street value. As such, unauthorized use and abuse of Agitrol can lead to increased demand and supply in the local drug dealing market.
  • Criminal activity: The high value of Agitrol in the illicit market can lead to increased criminal activity, such as theft and robbery, to acquire the drug. This, in turn, can fuel local drug dealing and other criminal activity.

llegally-obtained Agitrol can be used by a street gang to quickly incapacitate rivals and victims, allowing the gang to carry out their criminal activities without resistance. The gang members may administer the drug to their targets via injection, inhalation, or ingestion, depending on the situation and the target's level of aggression.

Once the drug takes effect, the victim may become disoriented, confused, and highly sedated, which may allow the gang members to rob, assault, or kidnap them without resistance. In some cases, the victim may even become completely unresponsive or fall into a coma, which can have severe and potentially life-threatening consequences.

The use of Agitrol in this way is highly dangerous and illegal, as the drug is only intended for use in controlled medical settings, where trained professionals can carefully monitor the patient's condition and adjust the dosage as needed. The unauthorized use of Agitrol can lead to a range of adverse health effects, including respiratory depression, seizures, coma, and death.

Furthermore, the illicit distribution and use of Agitrol can also fuel the underground drug market and increase criminal activity in the local community. Street gangs and other criminal organizations may attempt to profit from the sale of the drug, which can lead to increased violence and criminal activity, as well as the potential for addiction and other health risks among users.

RACIAL ABILITIES

  • Shapeshifting; Jason gains forms by DNA exposure and instinctively senses when he has gained a new form. Mechanically, this is tied to his triple-stranded DNA being able to recode itself and allow cells to remember genetic makeup of various forms. Form change is fluid and near-instantaneous, able to hybridize large-scale (such as growing claws or fangs in human form), and stores or extracts excess matter from the spiritual body (at a loss, leading to his rapid metabolism). Takes Mana as "fuel" and is otherwise considered a racial ability.
  • His shapeshifting grants him a natural regen on activation, requiring him to shift into another form, and severe wounds can still leave a scar.
  • Shapeshifter physiology grants Jason incredibly keen senses and nearly precognitive reflexes, as well as a general danger sense instinct. Jason, and other Shapeshifters, have been known to react to danger before they even know it was there, and this has saved his life more than once.
  • Shapeshifters have aggressive immune systems and rapid metabolisms, resulting in general immunity to (almost) all known toxins and diseases from outside sources. Viruses are generally unable to fully incubate within his body; vampirism further strengthens this immunity, and so far he's not found an externally-sourced disease he can be affected by.
  • In near-death situations, Shapeshifters are able to activate an intrinsic "Feral State" in which their cells go into somewhat of an overdrive, flooding their systems with the biological chemical that stores and sends form data. In this state, the Shapeshifter's eyes and markings change color and glow brightly, the markings may change shape entirely, and the Shapeshifter ignores both pain and fear in order to get out of the situation by fight or flight. Transformation is faster, more Mana-efficient, and has a drastically increased healing factor, and new forms may activate or be acquired much more quickly if there is an applicable creature's DNA in the environment. As a tradeoff, however, this last-ditch effort to survive massively exhausts the Shapeshifter once the effect wears off, frequently causing them to pass out, collapse, and/or need to eat a significant amount more than usual until they regain their energy.
  • Type E vampirism has partially jailbroken his form gain. Forms are developed rapidly now, through very little exposure or only one feeding. Sapient forms are gained as quickly as any other, instead of slowly. Jason eventually develops the ability to gain more than one form of a species, as long as the morphology is different enough (ie, he can develop a jackal Lycan morph in addition to his arctic wolf morph, but not a red wolf).
  • As a Type E vampire, Jason's saliva contains not just the virus, and thus the ability to spread it, but it also carries an anticoagulant to prevent a wound he's feeding on from clotting, as well as a powerful-fast acting sedative potent enough to subdue other drug-resistant creatures such as Shapeshifters. However, due to the nature of Type E viral vampirism, even if he injects the virus into his prey, it cannot incubate in anything other than another Shapeshifter.
  • Vampirism sharpened his low-light vision, sense of smell, sense of hearing, already-near-precognitive reflexes, and jaw strength. His Darkwing Firedrake form is now able to bend adamantium with his jaws; Jason can more generally hear someone's heart beat and respiration, and smell sweat and tears, acting as a living lie detector.
  • Type E vampires are able to "detach" and turn off their emotions, and can do so indefinitely. Jason currently cannot control this, and does it involuntarily.
  • In Darkwing Firedrake form, he is able to breathe a blue-white flame that is one of the hottest dragonflames recorded. Fire breath is Mana-based and requires no physiological spark; Jason can breathe perfectly while breathing fire, unlike a lot of other dragon species which use gas or venom to produce flame and thus must constantly be exhaling.
  • Jason's scales in Darkwing Firedrake form are made from keratin and an alloy of Mythril and Orichalcum. Not only does this provide protection from any piercing or slashing attack with strength below that of another dragon, at least on scaled areas, but it also provides him with incredible heat resistance and an extended Mana storage, as Mythril readily stores Mana and a dragon's scales are attached to its Mana Circuits.
  • Being a dragon in all things but (sometimes) physical form, Jason is therefore connected to the system which can be alternately called the Lifestream, the Ancestral Power Source, or simply the APS. Though this system is entirely too complicated to explain here, it grants him all the powers inherent to Euthoran dragons in general, as well as the powers inherent to the Darkwing Firedrake species. Included in this bundle of abilities are access to the Ancestral Memory, the ability to sense nearby dragons, the ability to hibernate for long periods of time and crystallize his powers, and the ability to "taste" the lingering power of other dragons in an area even after they are gone.
  • One ability that dragons possess is that to undergo a transformation known as Burst Mode. This transformation changes Jason's appearance and augments his combat abilities, both physical and metaphysical. Included effects for Jason's particular Burst Mode is augmented strength, endurance, and fire breath, as well as Mana usage and efficiency. However, as with all dragons, Jason expends most of his energy entering Burst Mode, can only stay in the transformation for a short time, and must "recharge" between uses.

POWERS

  • Jason's main power is one focusing around navigating, predicting, influencing, and subverting fate, and works especially strongly with stronger pulls of fate, called "wells". It also allows him to sense when important events and turning points are approaching, predict and understand complicated chains of events leading to a fate, and determine how his actions or the actions of others will affect the fate he is tracking. Jason possesses a sort of extra sense on the edge of his consciousness which gives him prods and nudges and quick moments of instinct regarding fate, and while it doesn't tell him exactly what to do, it's enough of a presence for him to understand that something important is happening or about to happen. The aforementioned aspects of his ability are always passively active and do not need to be consciously activated.
  • When untrained, Jason instinctively and unintentionally attempts to approach wells of fate by involving himself in important events. The pendant has most of the passive facets of the power pre-activated, before Jason even activates his own side of it, and it pulls him into major events without his knowledge or control. Because Jason is unaware of this until much later, he often "fights" with his pendant by trying to act on logic rather than impulse, which tends to result in events going awry or in an unplanned direction. As Jason gains more awareness of his own powers, he gains more control over how he uses them.
  • Conversely, Jason can choose to activate the other facets of his fate prediction power, which have varying effects. One such effect is the ability to "see" impressions and shadows of fate, which are encoded with information that includes properties and qualities like timeframe, complexity, strength, and converging events, and clarifies further as Jason masters the ability, until he can simply read it directly. He describes these shadows as having a "contour" that changes based on different factors, such as an individual's role or the nature of events to come. This part of his power works primarily with entities such as individual people, and if nobody else involved is around for him to analyze, he can simply analyze himself for a baseline read of the situation.
  • Another on-activation facet of Jason's fate intuition is the intentional analysis of specific events and circumstances to quickly and accurately determine what must happen or what must change in order to navigate, subvert, or strengthen the fate. This is usually only a loose, rough sense unless more information about the event is on the metaphorical table. Though it's usually used to avoid catastrophe, it can also be used to almost guarantee a fate with only a weak pull, or stabilize a fate that threatens to be changed by an outside force, such as another fate-affecting power.
  • At Jason's most trained, his fate intuition power is surgical, precise, and potent, and he can be considered a powerful precog in his own right. All facets of the power come together into a cohesive whole to create a tightly-focused precognitive instinct for how the currently-relevant fate will play out, what to do to change or avoid or guarantee it, and likely effects on the future. This is narrow in scope and not necessarily immediate, and Jason is unable to broaden this to encompass tangential fates. In combination with Mimring's Soul-Linked variation of the same ability, which prompts other involved individuals to act in a certain way to affect fate, the two of them can be used to quietly and efficiently subvert catastrophic events and their aftermath without either of them leaving the proverbial shadows.
  • These different aspects of the power combined are particularly effective against similarly fate-affecting powers and effects, especially those which are focused on changing or destabilizing events, or knocking fate off of its current course. Jason is ultimately a stabilizing force, whether it's stabilizing events that threaten to be changed or stabilizing a situation that would be impacted by a fate or its aftereffects.
  • A genetically-acquired, half-mind control half-telepathic psychic ability that focuses on forming mental and spiritual links with dragons; sometimes known as Dracoimpery when the focus is more control-oriented than empathy-oriented. Jason's Dracomancy was inherited from his father, and he's genuinely powerful with it, but in his youth refused to hone it because he didn't really like enslaving dragons. However, his capture by Koth Grimseeker and subsequent training by the same forced him to grow into the ability, and he became quite a force to be reckoned with. Because of the nature of Dracomancy as part of the APS, this grants Jason several passive abilities that don't directly relate to taking control of dragons, and instead focus on the links he already has.
  • Jason gives off a passive signal to nearby unlinked ("wild") dragons that causes them to instinctively approach to investigate. He has no control over this, nor can he control the inherent shifting of personal values and belief systems that dragons undergo gradually when connected to a Dracomancer for long enough. Because Jason's Dracomancy strain is highly Empathy-focused, these effects are strengthened and sped up, at the "cost" of his own thought patterns becoming more draconic over time.
  • Passive abilities granted to all Dracomancers are:
    • Ability to share Mana across the link (Mana focus 1/5, weak and inefficient)
    • Ability to share stamina and general "life" energy (Life focus 1/5, generally only useful to speed up natural healing in times of emergency)
    • Ability to forcibly overpower a dragon psychically to take control of it or deal mental damage (Mind focus 3/5, moderate skill in this ability; deceptively powerful)
    • Ability to quickly, seamlessly, and wordlessly communicate and coordinate with connected dragons (Empathy focus 5/5, specialization)
    • Ability to access the APS, including Ancestral Memory and the "trickle" (Spirit focus 5/5, specialization)
  • Jason is able to use his link with one of his dragons to attack or drive away another psychic power, whether a Dracomancer or not, that is connected or attempting to connect to the dragon in question. He is not able to take control of other Dracomancers if they aren't dragons, but he is powerful enough to defend himself and his dragons from one who is hostile and attempting to take control.
  • The ultimate expression of this power is Jason's ability to bind a dragon as a Familiar, in this case Mimring. A Dracomancer's Familiar is both mentally and spiritually bound to its master, to the point where the above effects are strengthened and they gain even more benefits from the link. The chief benefit of a Familiar link is that dragon and master are able to share powers: in this case, Jason has gained access to Mimring's electroimpery, and Mimring has gained access to Jason's Dracomancy and fate intuition. Mimring can act as a second-in-command in directing Jason's dragons, can aid his master in driving back another psychic enemy, can assist Jason in taking control of a stubborn dragon, and can more efficiently share his Mana and life energy despite Jason not specializing in those aspects.
  • However, the Familiar link does have drawbacks and quirks that aren't entirely positive. The primary "quirk" is that, over time, Jason's and Mimring's souls have begun to meld together, becoming inextricably interwoven into something greater-- but this means that severing the Familiar link would cause great spiritual damage to both sides. Additionally, the two are tied in their mortality: when one dies, the other will die soon after.
  • Unfortunately, because he is both a dragon and a Dracomancer, Jason is particularly vulnerable to the effects of Dracomancy himself, including the signal-seeking and the value shifting. This was most prominently seen when Koth captured him (being why the Dracoimperist was able to) , but has been a factor here and there in his youth otherwise. Since growing into himself and linking with Jude, this vulnerability has been mitigated enough to be considered a nonissue.
  • Through his Familiar link with Mimring, Jason has gained a variant of his dragon's electroimpery, or control over electricity. Jason's version is overall less versatile and less potent than Mimring's, and focuses more on utility than damage, though of course Jason can still throw lightning at enemies if he needs to. Between this and Jason's augmentation of this power via magic to fill in gaps and weaknesses, his electricity control is more limited, but also more specialized, than his dragon's. See the Magic tab for specifics on these augmentations.
  • Like Mimring, Jason can enter a state where he becomes a ball of lightning, dubbed "Photon Dragon". In this form, Jason can travel through the air very quickly, pass through conductive materials and small gaps, and deal damage by ramming into a target. Unlike Mimring, however, Jason can only hold this form for a short time, and must rematerialize much sooner than Mimring does. While he is fully aware of his surroundings and can discharge electricity in this state, he cannot use Mimring's "Burning Sky Conflux" technique in which the dragon explodes into multiple bolts to attack.
  • Electroreception, the ability to sense and determine the nature of electrical signals in both machinery and living things, is one of Jason's most useful and versatile senses. Almost always active, it essentially gives him a "life sense" and background feedback on where other creatures are in relation to himself, as well as being able to quickly find active electronics and general electrical devices. As he trains this ability, it eventually comes with a weak magnetoreception that aids his sense of direction and also helps him find metal ore within rock and soil, though it isn't good for much else.
  • One of his potentially more potent-with-training applications is the ability to send out a wide-ranging, but deceptively weak, pulse of radiation. While Jason can control the type and frequency of the resulting waves, he cannot do direct damage with it-- at least not the kind of damage that takes less than a few decades to truly appear. However, his ability to control the type of radiation he sends in the pulse makes it versatile in the kinds of effects it can produce, and is useful for various things such as interfering with radio communication.

MAGIC

  • Jason has a working knowledge of magic and Mana theory in general, and is able to take note of the ambient Mana in the area as well as his own remaining reserves of Mana. He understands the basic idea behind casting a spell, and is able to do basic magic such as hardening a weapon or guiding an arrow in a specific direction off of its initial trajectory.
  • Though he hasn't decided on a specific spelltype to train and hone, somewhat contrary to dragon culture surrounding magic, he learned enough about various schools of spellwork that he has some degree of knowledge and even skill in a wide variety of things, from enchanting to conjuration to your basic elemental offensive magic. Despite insistence from others that he should pick a specialty, Jason seems to have little to no interest in actually specializing his magic, preferring to learn a little about everything rather than everything about a little.
  • Something he has begun to specialize in, however, is augmenting and filling in the gaps in the more limited variant of electroimpery that he gained from Mimring. For general use, he can use magic to refine his electroreception into being able to recognize biological signs that tell him information such as health, mood, and intentions of a target he can't sense otherwise; this has a very short-term precognitive effect, letting him anticipate the target's actions before they happen. Additionally, he can turn his radiation pulses into a sort of radar which, when combined with the augmented electroreception, allow him to supervise a large area by determining both position of individuals and layout of objects and walls.
  • Most notable and potent, however, is the refining of his version of Photon Dragon. As yet unnamed, Jason can turn himself not just into electricity, but into radiation, making him vanish entirely. While in this state he can pass through any material that lets gamma rays through and travel at a blistering speed, faster even than the lightning bolt that is Photon Dragon. Though the type of radiation he becomes seems to be harmless and cannot do direct harm as an attack, he can bring whoever or whatever he's touching with him (again, anything he can pass through) all the way to wherever he rematerializes. Like Photon Dragon proper, however, Jason cannot maintain this form for very long and can only use it in bursts of a few seconds to half a minute.

INVENTORY

  • A composite longbow that is made from dragon horn with gold and silver inlays, with an enchantment that causes arrows shot from it to explode on impact, stolen from an enchanted weapon shop when Jason ran away from home. The enchantment was built primarily to knock dragons out of the sky, as the explosion causes turbulence that destabilizes flight. Jason has had custom arrows made for this bow that are sturdy, lightweight, and have red-to-black fletching. This was Jason's primary weapon in his youth, but is now rarely used because his hand injury prevents him from effectively shooting. Because Jason no longer used the bow, it was thus available for Jude to find and shoot down Jason himself, saving his life by allowing the Cult to recapture him. Outside of that, it's effectively a pretty and powerful but ultimately useless decoration until Jason passes it down to Tobias.
  • The pentagram pendant and the Emblem, both on the same black leather cord. The pendant was in Jason's possession when his mother gave him to Kaltai, and the Emblem was given to him by Jude. The former contains a sentient shard of Jason's soul, which uses Jason's real name-- Shiveztel-- as an identifier separate from its wearer. Shiveztel has Jason's fate intuition power active, and can influence Jason's actions and perceive the world through him. The Emblem, while no longer needed after Jason becomes Jude's Familiar, allows Jude and Jason to communicate telepathically across a distance and instantly teleport back home to Hammerspace. Shiveztel burns anyone he doesn't recognize or trust on contact, and this ward conducts along the cord, applying the effect to both the cord and the Emblem. The Emblem only works in Jason's possession.
  • A simple flute carved from dragon bone which Jason received as a child. Jason played this as a hobby in his youth, and was decently skilled at it, but stopped when matters in Ustream grew to be more stressful. He's barely acknowledged the flute since being rescued from Koth's control, as it reminds him of a time he simply can't return to.
  • A custom-built, hybrid resting hand splint and wrist stabilization brace, to be worn on Jason's right arm when he isn't using that hand. It's meant to keep the injured hand in a stable position, but restricts movement enough that Jason rather dislikes wearing it, causing Jude to have to consistently "remind" him. The brace is sturdy, made of neoprene with velcro straps and a metal frame, and can accommodate most of Jason's humanoid forms-- though he has to take it off when using an animal form. Add-ons can be attached to make it easier to fight with the brace on.
  • A riding harness and saddle, almost entirely for show, created by Jude for Jason's dragon form. The harness itself is made with treated leather, black in color, to help prevent being worn away by Jason's serrated scales. There are armor plates on the harness, covering Jason's numerous scars, made of an alloy called Adamant Dragonsteel-- that is, an alloy of Adamantium, Mythril, Orichalcum, and trace amounts of gold and platinum from the scales of the dragons the Mythril and Orichalcum were extracted from. This armor is lightweight but strong, and is mostly for show and intimidation, to drive home the point that Jude has a dragon as a Familiar and not to mess with them. However, Jason may wear this harness for pure utility purposes, as it comes fitted with immensely-useful saddlebags.

STRENGTHS

  • Both because of his Shapeshifter physiology and because of his vampirism, Jason has incredibly sharp senses that are fine-tuned to tracking prey and determining an adversary's position. Of note, his lowlight vision, sense of hearing, and sense of smell are incredible, and both his tactile senses and sense of taste are above average for his current form.
  • Due to efficient metabolism and immune system, Jason is resistant to the point of near-universal immunity to toxins, toxicants, and diseases from external causes. In many cases, his body will overpower these threats so quickly and completely that Jason will suffer few to no symptoms, unless it's something particularly potent.
  • Jason is highly perceptive, extremely clever, and highly detail-oriented. Much of the time, he'll be able to dissect a plan, form a counterplan, or bring up details that others might not have seen in order to navigate a situation. He's also been known to propose wild, sometimes crazy plans that nobody else would have thought of, only for it to work flawlessly.
  • With other people, Jason is generally emotionally intelligent and can easily tell when someone is feeling down or angry, though he may not always know what the cause of the emotion is and might misunderstand the source.
  • Jason is incredibly versatile in combat, and powerful when he's able to get out of his own way. His specific skillset works best as a backline tactical support, especially from the air, but he can operate as a frontline DPS when necessary. His powers are generally utility-focused, and he works particularly well as a general, noncombatant tactician.
  • Possibly related to him being perceptive and detail-oriented, Jason absorbs new information like a sponge, whether he's read it or been told it. He may not always retain minor information such as the name of something, but he will remember general details and what he deems to be important about the subject matter.
  • Shapeshifting as an ability lets him blend in with both sapient and nonsapient species, as long as his black-and-silver color scheme is a naturally possible one. Because Jason also gains the instincts of the form he takes, albeit as a background presence, he can mimic the behavior of the species to further mask himself.
  • Nearly-precognitive reflexes and an inherent "danger sense" granted to him by his species physiology means that Jason will frequently avoid danger he didn't consciously know was coming, because his instincts registered a movement, tell, or noise that made reflex take over and keep him safe.

WEAKNESSES

  • Although his incredible senses are usually an objective benefit, they make him particularly vulnerable to attacks which hit his senses specifically, especially light- and sound-based offenses. Though these don't do direct, physical damage to him, they can potentially stun him, force him to back down, or even be used as torture.
  • Despite his aggressive immune system, Jason was clearly not immune to Type A viral vampirism, and his body tried so hard to kill the virus with a fever that he could well have died without supportive care. He also isn't immune to Dark's mutated Type B sedative, which the Sarkiri later used to tranquilize, drug, and kidnap him.
  • Even though he's perceptive and intelligent, Jason is frequently caught in his own thoughts and is shockingly forgetful and easily distracted at times. This feeds into his natural impulsivity, which means he may sometimes rush headlong into danger because he forgot an important detail, or he may say the wrong thing at the wrong time and make a situation worse.
  • Even with his ability to decipher and understand the emotions of others, Jason has incredible difficulty processing and coming to terms with his own. He can be prone to wild mood swings and sudden, short-lived, violent outbursts, which usually turns into him spending all of his energy on one angry action and quickly going back to hating himself.
  • Jason has incredible difficulty in controlling his own Type E vampirism, and is pretty much always hungry as a result. He needs to both feed regularly on blood, and will often be aggressive about getting that blood, and has to eat solid food at least every few days to keep up with his own rapid metabolism. He may also be actively addicted to hunting and feeding on new prey items for the explicit purpose of gaining new forms, whether or not he plans to use them.
  • His slew of mental health problems (including but not limited to: clinical psychosis, clinical depression, Complex PTSD, generalized anxiety, codependency, and a history of self-harm) means that not only is he easily stressed and overwhelmed, has a crippling inferiority complex fueled by self-hatred, and has so little self-esteem that he blames himself for everything, but Jason is also highly receptive to certain documented manipulation tactics. These mostly include known cult tactics, such as love-bombing, alternating praise and criticism, gaslighting, and NLP techniques such as anchoring.
  • A Shapeshifter's main color scheme does not change across forms, so any form that cannot naturally come in his striking black-and-silver palette is nearly useless for blending in to populations of that form.

FIGHTING STYLE

  • Jason is a versatile combatant who can fill most roles that the situation or his team requires of him. He has experience as a frontline combatant, a backline combatant, or as a noncombatant tactical support. This last one is the role he excels at and prefers, but he can fill any of the three competently and may switch between them mid-fight.
  • As a frontline combatant, Jason mostly makes use of his shapeshifting abilities and his general dexterity and strength. His "weapon" of choice is either his wolf form, with its speed and fangs, or a partial-shift into his Darkwing Firedrake form for its claws. Though he will utilize other forms as the circumstances warrant, these are the two he is most comfortable fighting with.
  • As a backline combatant, Jason used to use his bow, but with his hand injury this is no longer viable as an option in a combat scenario. Rather, now he uses the mobility of his Darkwing Firedrake form to fly around and unleash fire upon the battlefield, or his Photon Dragon state to quickly reposition around the battlefield for a better angle on his electroimpery.
  • As a noncombatant tactical support, Jason either hangs on the fringes of the battle in human or Lycan form or soars above the battlefield in just about any flight-capable form, preferring Darkwing Firedrake or raven. In either case, he watches the battle from a safe distance, feeding information to Jude and relying on the Lycan to relay that information to his teammates. This is Jason's strongest point in a combat situation, and the one which he prefers to take, though on occasion he must switch to assisting in combat more directly.

Wolves (Acoustic ver.) - Aviators

Breathing, I embrace the feeling of despair that keeps me standing on my own.

Skyfall - Adele

Where you go, I go. What you see, I see. I know I'd never be me without the security of your loving arms keeping me from harm.

Better Than One - The Score

I'll be the light that guides you home when skies are grey, there's nothing I won't do to keep you safe.

Setting Sun - Miracle of Sound

And there’s a price to pay for all that we have done; turn my eyes away and watch the setting sun.

Kaibutsu - AmaLee

So tell me, is it right to live just as I am truthfully? Or tell me, is it better to live when I have to deceive?

Exile Vilify - The National

You got sucker's luck. Have you given up? Does it feel like a trial? Does it trouble your mind the way you trouble mine?

The Breach - Starset

Am I alive? Am I pretending? You said I could fly, so go on, then. Fill my eyes with fire. I'm a sleeper awakened.

Dial Connected - SOUND HOLIC

Taking the edge of the orbit, the silver time is divided. As I continue falling like this, equally freeze me as well!

I'm Not Okay - Citizen Soldier

Tonight the monsters in my head are screaming so damn loud, but I built walls so high so they never even make a sound.

Therapy - Citizen Soldier

I don't know why you try to fix me like I can be fixed overnight. Don't try, I'm fine. Don't tell me that you understand.

Empty - Letdown

You don’t know the hell I've been through, you don’t know the price I've paid. You can’t see the walls I’m bracing, time I’m facing, all my days.

Running With The Wolves - AURORA

There's blood on your lies, the scars open wide. There is nowhere for you to hide, the hunter's moon is shining.

Lost Time Memory - Will Stetson

“Can you hear my voice?” disappearing in the twilight. The reasons then were so clear in hindsight. I reach my hand to the heat and the blur of the haze.

Angel Eyes and Basketball - Foot Ox

And you have to believe me when I say I understand that no one 'round here seems to understand.

Lonely - Nathan Wagner

If I looked you in the eye and showed the broken things inside, would you run away? Would you run away?

Innocence - Nathan Wagner

If you saw my darkest parts, the wicked things inside my heart. (I won't run away, I won't run away)

Bad Luck - Aviators

You taught me how to hate the world itself, well lucky me. But am I free? Now am I free?

Hell Has An Elevator - Aviators

My mind is scouring secrets not any soul will tell; Sometimes to face the demons, you have to walk through Hell.

Amnesia - Miracle of Sound

Amnesia, you forgot your name, don't let your spirit fade away. Amnesia, you've been through such pain, but your little heart is growing stronger every day.

DESIGN NOTES

  • Markings are form-specific, but follow a general theme. Arrow under eye is not optional, front and hind limbs always have "fingerless sock" markings, there's usually some form of underbelly and tail rings.
  • Human form sort of has these markings, in the form of sparse body hair turning silver instead of black. Invisible unless closely inspected.
  • Feral State markings are consistent across all forms, barring body parts that may not exist.
  • These colors can change according to form:
    • Skin
    • Pupil
    • Teeth
    • Mouth
    • Sclerae
    • Blood
    • Bone
  • These colors do not change according to form:
    • Hair, fur, feathers, scales
    • Eyes (normal and feral)
    • Marking and accent colors (normal and feral)
    • All parts of the pendant
  • Eyes and sapphire in pendant always glow. Markings glow only in Feral State.
  • Not required, but I do the eye/pendant glow by using the airbrush to overlay the area's base color at 54% opacity with the layer effect Shine in SAI (Linear Dodge in Photoshop, Luminosity in some programs).
  • Scar shape is flexible, placement and type are not. Scars present, in chronological order:
    • Laceration scars on the left shoulder from getting ripped open by Slash [CoU S1]
    • Laceration scar on the left side from getting impaled by Slash [CoU S1]
    • Massive puncture scar on both sides of the right hand or equivalent from being stabbed by Zio [CoU S2]
    • Laceration scar on left wing "forearm" from Razhius's ambush (only in six-limbed animals) [CoU S2]
    • Laceration scars on back of right thigh from Espira [CoU S3]
    • Double laceration scar on left upper arm or equivalent from Salieek [N&A Arc 1]
    • Small laceration scar on left wrist from Mirah "accidentally" cutting him [N&A Arc 1]
    • Jagged laceration-puncture scar on left side of neck from Mirah biting and gnawing on him [N&A Arc 1]
    • Small puncture scar on back of neck from embedded collar [N&A Arc 1]
    • Double puncture scar below/behind left shoulder blade from Dark biting him [N&A Arc 1]
  • Scars are the color of the area around them, but lighter. Default to main skin color if scar crosses more than one color.
  • Jason should not be drawn with both his bow and any scar starting from the puncture wound on his right hand, because it crippled his ability to shoot. If you want to draw him with his bow, either remove the scars entirely or only give him the first two.
  • Pendant is made of silver, brass, and a single sapphire on a black leather cord that closes via a brass spring clasp.
  • Pendant is not optional, but can be omitted in refs if design is cluttered. Pendant will automatically change its physical form if Jason's form is too small or cannot accommodate the necklace; see Protogen and Primagen forms for examples.
  • Small, black areas such as pupils, as well as arrow shafts and pendant cord, can just be drawn as black lines if it's easier.

  • Oddly enough, the concepts of Burst Mode, dragon-centric mind control, and one man leading a dragon army through said mind control came about before How To Train Your Dragon 2 was released.
  • The idea of dragons eating metal, the creation myth of Euthora, and a bunch of smaller things were taken directly from the book series Age of Fire by E. E. Knight.
  • Jason's name was inspired by Jason Schuyler from the Anita Blake: Vampire Hunter book series by Laurell K. Hamilton, as was the idea of making him a Shapeshifter.
  • Jason's bow is not just inspired by, but taken from, the Flaming Burst enchantment that can be applied to longbows in version 3.5 of Dungeons and Dragons. Its appearance is based on Auriel's Bow from The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

GENERAL

“And yeah, I figured, he's doing the good ol' "one of my 500 mental illnesses is making me push away the people that want to help me" [...] Jason is very clearly venting out his frustrations while pushing people away, more subconsciously than consciously, I'm sure, which leads to this self-defeating cycle where his friends can't in good conscience let him smash his head into the wall, but Jason sees it as something oppressive, that they're only exerting more control”
-- Shadow, OoC

Naturally aloof and distrusting of most people, especially after the end of Cult of Ustream, Jason's relationship with people in general is practically nonexistent. Jason is typically high-strung and flighty around strangers, or even people he knows but hasn't been around in a while. Afflicted with a rather severe case of social anxiety due to trauma, Jason prefers to make himself scarce and hide somewhere in the background when visitors come to one of the two places he considers home.

Unfortunately, his stubborn, distant, often combative nature has a tendency to manifest even with people he considers friends, and when upset or stressed he often subconsciously tries to push those people away. Those closest to him have necessarily learned to be patient and let Jason approach them at his own pace, though many of them could be forgiven for that patience wearing thin over the years.

SELF

Self

“No matter what, I always seem to go back to... to hating myself. I don't know how to stop.”

Jason's most strained relationship is that with himself. Riddled with guilt from past crimes, trauma from specific events, and mental illnesses that have accumulated over the years, Jason's self-loathing goes back to his teenage years, even before Koth Grimseeker took over his mind and brainwashed him. Jason's own impulsive nature and his inclination to be surprisingly naive with people he trusts has worked against him too many times to count, and because these behaviors are near-instinctive to him, attempting to break the habit has not succeeded. Having a distinct difficulty with self-control in high-stress situations, he has on multiple occasions gone "too far" and injured or even killed someone who wasn't an enemy. Because of this, and many similar instances and tendencies, Jason struggles with feelings of self-hatred and worthlessness, to the point of self-harm and even an unconscious indifference to the idea of his own death-- despite vehemently denying it when confronted.

Spiritual Twin • Linked Dragon

“Even now I feel him pulling at me like a magnet, a beacon blinding me to all else, a call that must be answered.”

Given Shiveztel's prominent role in who and where Jason is today, mental health problems and all, one could be forgiven for thinking the twin souls hate each other. However, this is far from the case-- not only is Shiveztel ultimately "programmed" to protect Jason, even if that programming has been broken, but Jason finds himself agreeing with the choices the dragon has made. In fact, upon Shiveztel's initial discovery and subsequent "trial" at the hands of Shadow and Eschia, Jason was his twin's fiercest defender throughout the discussion, even going so far as to become confrontational and even hostile. The reason for Jason's passion in defending Shiveztel, if it extends beyond the pair being in agreement about the offending decisions and events, is currently unknown.

FAMILY

Complicated • Legal (Adoptive) Father • Social Brother • Best Friend • Loyalty-Bound • Master • Handler

“Jason, please stay with me. I'll protect you.” he said, whimpering reaching a fever pitch, “Now, and always. I promise.”
His voice was quiet but very clear as he muttered his reply. “I know.”

Although Jason's relationship with Jude is incredibly complicated, it is also powerful and built on mutual trust, respect, camaraderie, and decades of history. What they are to each other cannot be summed up in a simple phrase or sentence. They are best friends, brothers, father and son, master and Familiar, protector and charge, and more. Both are, at this point, both physically and psychologically incapable of distrusting or falling out of favor with the other, as both have independently activated different instinctive and irrevocable bonds of loyalty and protection with the other. Once their Familiar link is truly cemented, one is never seen without the other, and-- at least for a while-- the two of them plus Mimring form a sort of triumvirate and are a force to be reckoned with in their own right. The history between Jason and Jude is mired in mental illness, strife, war, and more, but every bit of suffering these two go through makes their eventual happy ending all the sweeter.

Wife • Complicated

“I could spend months recounting every atrocity I performed operating as a reaper. But there's no point, because I have no regrets. To me now, that was an entirely different person. And that is thanks to you. You made me a new person. So whatever you did, whatever you're going through? We'll deal with it together. Take it from me; it will get better.”

If any of Jason's relationships are complicated, the one he has with his wife is it. Having met because Jason made and then reneged on a deal he made with a reaper in order to save Mimring's life when he was a child, Jason has long considered Destiny one of the very few he could trust without question-- or, rather, he did. Though Jason was more than willing to overlook the somewhat rocky start he had with Destiny when he was younger, her keeping very important information from him for fear of his reaction frayed their relationship, and this only got worse when she essentially forced not just one, but two children on him, despite knowing full well he wasn't ready for either one and that he had misgivings about the possibility of passing his vampirism strain to the second child-- which, of course, he did. That said, though the two aren't quite "close" by Gen 2, they are able to present a more or less united front to their children, and still do care for each other.

Biological Son

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”

Jason's relationship with his son is unfortunately a strained one. Fearing the instinctual urge to attack uninfected Shapeshifters, Jason has intentionally distanced himself from Tobias for the latter's own safety; however, Tobias's feelings of being left out are only strengthened by the fact that not only is this happening, but-- at Jason's request-- nobody is explaining the reason to him. Though Jason has reason to keep this information from his son-- he doesn't want the kids to think he's a danger to them-- it results in Tobias, who has inherited much of Jason's personality and Destiny's temperament, feeling as if he is being intentionally excluded from what he thinks is a family gift, even though it is anything but.

Biological Daughter

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”

Legal Sister • Social Niece

“Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit.”

Sire • Sire-Bound • Legal (Adoptive) Mother • Complicated

“You're a predator, dear. All I did was give you better tools.”

Jason's vampiric sire and legally adoptive mother, Mirah is one of only two vampires that Jason will willingly let feed on him-- the other being Jude. Whether this is because of trust, affection, or simply submission is uncertain, as Jason seems to regard his sire with all three, even letting her physically pet him if he's in an animal form. However, the relationship is still a strange and complicated one, as not only did Mirah nearly kill Jason in the incident that turned him into a vampire, but she is also a master manipulator who has been using her skills and unique position to subtly program Jason-- both for better and worse. As of now, however, her goals are more toward the former, trying to help improve both his control and health through subtle manipulation techniques. All in all, she does care for him, and tries to help him in the only way she truly knows how.

Biological Father • Deceased (Interlude)

“... There are measures being taken. Both by Jason himself and by my mate. She may well get involved-- Euthora cannot afford Jason's death at this stage any more than it can afford Shyr's. It is difficult to explain. But she has a way of predicting things that I cannot imagine. And if she believes that her son is vital to this world, I believe her.”

Jason's father is, unfortunately, someone that he never quite knew. Absent from his son's life for almost its entirety, Mordicai kept watch over Jason from a distance, mostly through Rae's ability as a deity to gain information without being physically present. Though a few dragons did make the connection between Jason and Mordicai-- as Jason's Darkwing form is the spitting image of his father, though with a slightly different color tint-- Jason himself never did until the two finally, however briefly, came face-to-face in Season Two of Cult of Ustream. Mordicai clearly cares very deeply for Jason, but the distance he was forced to keep means Jason does not feel the same. Though he doesn't dislike Mordicai, he doesn't like him either, and thinks more of Jude as his father figure than he ever considered Mordicai.

Biological Mother • Creator • Asshole

“I let the world raise you. I let you see the problems that riddle this world, let you learn how to navigate them and fix them. I provided you a twin to keep you from dying prematurely, and allowed you to learn and grow into your powers yourself. It worked, didn't it?”

Having never directly interacted with his mother, Jason's opinion of her is mostly neutral-negative. Though he isn't fully aware of the extent to which Rae meddled in his life and caused much of the stress he went though growing up, he knows enough to be aware that she is responsible for Shiveztel's existence, and by extension his actions. Unfortunately, all Jason knows of Rae as a person is that she left him on a seemingly random Shapeshifter's doorstep as a newborn and more or less let him fend for himself afterwards. This doesn't exactly give him a shining opinion of her, and both Jason and Jude would likely have some harsh words for Rae should she ever show herself to them.

Legal Cousin-Once-Removed • Mostly Undeveloped

"You're a mess, but I won't push you to explain why. You read like you've seen more than most do in their entire lives, and you look like you're barely an adult. I'll try to be here for you. Between me and my cousin, you're in good hands now."

Not entirely sure how to act around Dennis, Jason opts for neutral, if aloof. Though he doesn't exactly dislike Jude's cousin, he also doesn't know him very well, and so Jason's hesitation to trust shows through clearly in the social distance he keeps from Dennis. Jason does readily recognize that Dennis appears to be trying to help him, and so doesn't expressly avoid the Lycan, but is reluctant to approach on his own and isn't particularly open with Dennis. He does, however, admit that Dennis will "get there eventually".

Fledgeling

Once again he fell upon the prey the Sarkiri had provided. He knew they'd drive him away from it again, so he didn't bother dragging it away, but he did jerk his head to the side when he caught the shoulder again, trying to draw more blood than his previous attempts.

At present, these two characters barely know that the other exists, and only know that much because Jason infected Cyran with pure Type E viral vampirism. They do not know each others' names or identities, or even appearances, as Jason has forgotten much of his experience in captivity. It is unknown if Cyran has sire-bonded to Jason.
