Atticus is not an easy person to get on with. He's incredibly stubborn and violent at times, as betta fish generally are, and likes to pick fights for fun. He prefers going solitary, sticking to the edge of the rice frields away from the general population of idiot males and aggressive females. The only person he hangs around is another male, Samuel. Sammy was born with a swim bladder disorder, so a lot of the other fish, especially the females around breeding season, pick on him and leave him in the dust. Atticus started watching him simply as a form of entertainment, but slowly he became curious as to why he didn't fight back when the others bothered him.
After a while, the two actually became close, and Atticus had no idea why he found the other betta so intriguing. Eventually he realises it's because he has accidentally developed feelings for him. This, obviously, is against the betta culture, and once the two of them realise the immediate repercussions they flee to Atticus' territory on the outskirts once more. They are regularly followed around by two other bettas, Tethys and Phoenicis, who are kinda hostile, but ultimately curious towards their lifestyle. Atticus despises them, but at Sammy's request leaves them alone unless they get too close for comfort.
