A Fragment of Undreamt Dreams

About

May your nights be filled with dreams that have yet to be dreamt.

Their abrupt departure from Teyvat had left Tori shaken and terrified. Despite that, seeing her equally shaking niece, Tori stood her ground and bravely made a deal with the curious Aeon, Akivili. He finds their plight amusing, perhaps wanting them to join his journey and granted her a body (and a seat in his Express) but it was but a mere passing moment. She didn't know how long she and Aerin had floated into the vast void until Himeko came upon them. Tori then accepted her offer and join the express, just as she had made a deal with a passing Aeon ages ago. When Welt joins the crew, perhaps it is her instinct reacting to the former Herrscher Core holder, perhaps it is his otherworldlyness, but Tori had made a rather bold and out of character move for her--cling onto the confused and flustered man like he was her lifeline.

It became a rather interesting sight, Tori making flirty remarks and calling him 'dear/darling' despite only having met. In normal circumstances, she would be bewildered and horrified at such remarks, but the trauma of witnessing the Cataclysm and abandonment from the one person she thought could save her had shifted something in her brain: Perhaps she was not too upfront about her feelings, about herself, that he could not bare to turn around for her. So, she sought to rectify it this time with Welt Yang (much to his resignment and to Himeko's amusement) Aerin, still battling her inner demons, had yet to connect the dots of her aunt's sudden shift in personality (though later on she does comment how strangely out of character it is for her to do such things) Welt, being the victim of all this, kept his thoughts to himself (though later on he got used to it, even liking and actively pursuing her once things had settled down)

Her story quest concludes (and will only unlock) after Aerin's own in Jarilo-VI. The full context of her past has been revealed to Welt, who resolved to do what he can to help her out. This also marks the start of Tori finally embracing her old self of being more mature and less likely to cling onto Welt (much to his now growing frustration), appearing less likely to seek him out immediately. Due to this, Welt actively tries to gain her attention through various means, but unfortunately it all filters out of Tori's rather simple-minded head. The Express (mainly March 7th) had all been witness to this long charade between the two, with Himeko stepping in and not really letting anyone tell the two off. Tori, finally feeling free from the shackles of her traumatizing past, had begun to heal and look forward for whatever future may come.

Description

  • A rather mature, yet bold lady upholding some sort of noble stature. Tori, despite being direct and upfront with most of her thoughts and feelings, can be rather modest and sometimes even outright shy. Aerin notes that her rather bold propositions and flirty remarks to Welt had been born out of desperation, perhaps even a self-defense mechanism in her mind to cope from the huge trauma of a certain blonde swordsman abandoning her. Much to the chagrin of the entire Astral Express Crew, she had been in big denial or genuinely out of loop towards the more proactive approaches of Welt later on. She is, according to March, a very respectable noble woman that is perhaps more akin to a scholar than the typical nobles she had read about in passing. If you get her and Welt talking about mechanics and robotics, they'll go on and on unless someone interrupts them from their continuous chatter (//cough, flirting)

Likes

  • Cooking. A proper lady and part of the upper echelon of the Alberich was always nurtured with great emphasis on culture and etiquette. Cooking happens to be her specialty, perfecting the culinary art with treacherous trial and error. No matter how little or how odd the ingredients given to her, you can be assured that once passed onto her dainty hands, they will be a masterpiece. After all her troubles crafting this skill from ground up, surely even she would be fond of something she knows will delight others.
  • The Astral Express. There is a sense of safety and home within the giant machinery. Perhaps she attributes it to the first place they had taken to after nearly floating in the void for so long after meeting the passing Aeon (who coincidentally is the same Aeon the faction follows). While it isn't exactly her homeland, it most certainly is her Home, as all the people she held dear are present within the moving machinery.
  • Saving Worlds. Learning from Himeko that Trailblazers also tend to help save dying worlds, it had been a rather fascinating and amazing feeling to partake in them for the first few times. Knowing that another planet had been prevented from turning into the next Khaenri'ah, something in Tori soars with pride and hope, perhaps also healing the little broken lady left behind that day.
  • Machinery. Just like her niece, Tori is somewhat fond of the machinery, robotics in particular. She's had first hand experience of being able to go through and operate one of the ginormous ruin golems found within Sumeru and it had fascinated her ever since. Like Aerin, Tori has had a Field Tiller for a body guard at one point, though it had been inoperable for some time due to the growing unrest within Khaenri'ah and looking into Forbidden Knowledge.

Dislikes

  • Inteyvat. The irony of preserving a part of their homeland in her catalyst, the national flower had been her once favorite. Now, all she is reminded of is "How much she, too, loved these flowers." The soil from Khaenri'ah, letting the white petals grow and bloom over two weeks before crytalizing and wilting, the process of rebirth constantly repeating... She hopes one day to break the cycle and permanently let them crystalize.
  • Erosion. It had been food for thought, a sort of puzzle within the Khaenri'ahn researchers, that Erosion for the long-lived and near immortal are the inevitable fates of the poor creatures. She had once been horrified of the knowledge that memories and her own identity would be taken away by the constant ticking of time. However, just like everyone else, it had been not a problem for her to think through, her lifespan being a normal human... Until the curse bestowed on them. Now, she once again thinks back, with her own affliction, terrified of the dreaded disease. Will she, too, one day forget her past, her identity, maybe even the love she felt for Welt?
  • "The Blond Traveler". While she had not been active in her pursuit of the Twilight Sword, there had been little to no other ladies near her status and stature in terms of pedigree and bloodline. It gave her confidence, that she had been at least a decent match for the other man. So hearing of his lovelorn expression and longing for an outsider, one who hails from beyond their world even, had left a bitter, acid-stinging taste in her mouth and heart. She meant her no harm, but a love lost to her had given Tori no sense of friendliness or companionship towards the traveler.
  • Heavenly Beings. The world wrapped in fire, six almighty beings rising from the wreckage, a giant nail descending from the heavens, Tori remembers it all with clarity and a trembling heart. The mere mention of any heavenly being, be it Aeons or Archons or what have you not, she'll most likely have any opposing opinion of its followers. Worst, finding out a shared part of your clan is behind a cult, sacrificing your body to a mad minor god... it dampens the entire experience of being at awe of one.

Trivia

  • Like Aerin, Tori is only playable and unlockable after finishing her own quest. Unlike with Aerin, however, you only proceed through her quest with Welt in your party. During the finale, she also switches (and alternates) Elements from Imaginary to Quantum (which is reminiscent and opposite of her niece, being able to switch from Physical to Imaginary) and being able to deal damage from both elements with her skill and basic attack (and even ultimate)
  • Both Tori and her niece are part of the Alberich Clan, with Tori being either part of the second or at least, somewhat close to Chlothar Alberich's line. Compared to Aerin (who was confirmed to have blood from Byakuyakoku), Tori is considered a pure blood, both parents hailing from Khaenri'ah.
  • Her catalyst was originally the eye of a ruin guard, possibly repurposed for it to be a working orb instead. Later on, it is confirmed to be contaminated with a dead god's residue and is most likely the reason for their escape outside Teyvat.
    • Though unclear, the eye may have been originally from the very same body guard Field Tiller Tori laments that she had once been together with.
  • Though she is seperated from her body in Teyvat, sometimes the god residing in it would leak out memories and sights of her homeland, resulting in her being able to piece in details.
  • According to some conversations she's had with Kaeya, her chosen Darshan in the Akademiya would have been Kshahrewar.
  • In more conversations with Kaeya, he jokingly makes a note that had Tori been granted a Vision, it'd sure be a Dendro one.
    • In alternate Bubble Universes, Tori does end up with a Dendro Delusion, joining Pierro in the Fatui.
  • Like Aerin, Tori's original name "Vanir" was one of the old factions warring against the Aesir.
    • The name [Historia] was born out of her unresolved feelings for her homeland and its destruction. Her history goes with her wherever she goes, even tho [Vanier] is cursed, she takes pride in it.

Story

I. Khaenri'ah and Teyvat

Born as a noble of the Alberich Clan and part of the upper echleon, Vanier lacked nothing but perhaps companionship and mutual trust of other same-age peers. Instilled with etiquette, culture, knowledge, and pride, she holds her head up high as to not disappoint her already disappointed parents. She knows where all nobles of her stature end up: either highly praised as a woman of society in the circles or a scholar of unparalleled proportions. She chose to be the latter, much to the further nose-diving opinion of her strict parents, further driving a wedge between them.

It is due to the growing stress and constant strive for knowledge that she stumbles upon the young Captain of the Black Serpents who was the first of her peers to show her acknowledgement and admiration for her determination and skills. She kept it to heart, fondness and a sprout of what she calls affection slowly growing. Though they don't interact much afterwards, the impression left on Vanier had been drastic, almost to he point of obsession at one point. Unfortunately for her, rumors of a blond traveler has caught the interest (romantically even) of the one she had love, dragging her down to a near depressed state. It is there where she met the young Aesear Alberich, forming an unlikely friendship and bond after hearing much of her distress. Upon her niece's urging, she formally went to his estate, proposing one last attempt to be betrothed only to receive a rather vague reply. She clung onto that hope, although Aesear had warned her for the worst. Things had seemingly been looking up.

The Cataclysm

A quiet day had turned into a disaster, fire spreading everywhere and destruction befalling upon the Nation of Humans. The Archons of Celestia cast their wrath upon the poor unsuspecting people, a Wrathful Nail from Celestia descending far south, people all over writhing in pain from the curse bestowed on them... Vanier had awoken to a hellish nightmare. Upon confronting her parents, they had explained to her that there is a need to combat the pesky gods goading over them and told her that her sacrifice is needed. She is held down, her body paralyzed and to be used as a vessel for a god of their own making to fight the Archons.

Vanier, terrified, called upon anything to stop whatever they are doing only to end up in failure. Though her calls did end up activating what remains of the dead god's residue, ejecting herself from the powerful force entering her body and keeping her consiousness alive with a makeshift body it made. She stared, horrified at the mad god they had called upon, running away in despair as she hears their cries of massacre. Along the way, she stumbles upon Aesear, in the process of transforming into an Abyssal creature. She tried carrying her to safety but her lacking in strength and slowly slipping away from whatever body the residue had given her had proven it to be a futile effort. She hears Dainsleif stumble upon them, hurrying to the palace and looking into the distance at the Traveler's behest.

She calls out to him with hopes of being saved or taken to safety at the very least. He looks back, a split decision forming in his face before being snapped back by the shouting. He apologized, not wanting to look back at his heartless decision. Vanier stares in growing disbelief and confusion, finally realizing that no help will be coming on their way. In one last ditch effort, she held onto a piece of connection to her body, taunting the god residing in it and annoying it to the best of her abilities. The god felt her trying to slip back in, so in a last ditch effort, it brought her all the way outside of Teyvat, to the void of space (and apparently, the Sea of Quanta), where Tori can do nothing but curl over Aesear's still writhing body to protect themselves.

II. Akivili and the Nameless

It had only been a short while perhaps when she hears the echo of a god, a laughter and an amused sigh of something powerful. She can barely lift her eyes from the wrangled body she was still residing in, unable to even open her mouth to respond or sneer. It took pity on her, or perhaps the girl crying in pain from keeping her transformation at bay and gave her a much stable body to communicate with. Vanier questions its motive, not believing that gods could be so merciful and kindhearted without a goal. It simply made a deal with her: once their means of leaving had arrived, she should follow the Path of the Nameless and discover the universe through her own eyes. It leaves her confused but lucid enough to help seal of Aesear's memories to lessen the impact of the curse. With them being so far away from the source of the disaster and with the mysterious Aeon's appearance and help, it sealed off whatever curse the heavens brought upon her niece.

With nothing else left, Vanier closed her eyes, awaiting for that promised day the Aeon had foretold of. She doesn't quite remember for how long they drifted but the next thing she does recall is a huge machinery and a red-headed lady calling herself Himeko had offered for them to travel on the Astral Express. There she knew, that this was what that Aeon was talking about and proceeded to make herself part of the crew.

For me, the world isn't just Welt, it's also Joachim.

Aerin

Niece || "Aerin"

A family member of the same clan. She is the reason why Tori had gotten herself together and bravely talked to an Aeon. Treats her like a daughter.

I pray, that Gepard does not meet the fate of Halfdan, and you not like me before Welt.

Himeko

Friend/Savior || "Ma'am"/"Himeko"

A lady dressed warmly who saved and accepted the two escapees from Khaenri'ah. She acts as the big sister that Tori never had in her life.

She's like fire, burns brightly and protects warmly. I wish she was present back then...

Caelus

Friend || "Caelus"/"Young Man"

A young man whose quirky nature she often finds herself fond of. Most often than not, ends up falling for phone scams along with him.

All we need is to send payment and... Scam? Huh? But Caelus sent his payment--Oh no...

The young heir of their bloodline. He updates her with all the ongoings of Teyvat after reconnecting with her.

He says he wants to play TCG with me one day. Should I invite Welt, too?

Her curiosity always stirs the scholar and teacher in me.

Chlothar

Half-Brother || "Elder Brother"

Her elder half-brother from the Alberich Clan. Not as close, but she had babysat his son many times.

Caribert is a wonderful boy, I hope he at least let his son know what the love of a parent is.

Dainsleif

Former Beloved || "Dain"

The captain of the illustrious Black Serpent Knights. She had longed to be with him, once upon a time, until he had turned his back on her.
