Story
I. Khaenri'ah and Teyvat
Born as a noble of the Alberich Clan and part of the upper echleon, Vanier lacked nothing but perhaps companionship and mutual trust of other same-age peers. Instilled with etiquette, culture, knowledge, and pride, she holds her head up high as to not disappoint her already disappointed parents. She knows where all nobles of her stature end up: either highly praised as a woman of society in the circles or a scholar of unparalleled proportions. She chose to be the latter, much to the further nose-diving opinion of her strict parents, further driving a wedge between them.
It is due to the growing stress and constant strive for knowledge that she stumbles upon the young Captain of the Black Serpents who was the first of her peers to show her acknowledgement and admiration for her determination and skills. She kept it to heart, fondness and a sprout of what she calls affection slowly growing. Though they don't interact much afterwards, the impression left on Vanier had been drastic, almost to he point of obsession at one point. Unfortunately for her, rumors of a blond traveler has caught the interest (romantically even) of the one she had love, dragging her down to a near depressed state. It is there where she met the young Aesear Alberich, forming an unlikely friendship and bond after hearing much of her distress. Upon her niece's urging, she formally went to his estate, proposing one last attempt to be betrothed only to receive a rather vague reply. She clung onto that hope, although Aesear had warned her for the worst. Things had seemingly been looking up.
The Cataclysm
A quiet day had turned into a disaster, fire spreading everywhere and destruction befalling upon the Nation of Humans. The Archons of Celestia cast their wrath upon the poor unsuspecting people, a Wrathful Nail from Celestia descending far south, people all over writhing in pain from the curse bestowed on them... Vanier had awoken to a hellish nightmare. Upon confronting her parents, they had explained to her that there is a need to combat the pesky gods goading over them and told her that her sacrifice is needed. She is held down, her body paralyzed and to be used as a vessel for a god of their own making to fight the Archons.
Vanier, terrified, called upon anything to stop whatever they are doing only to end up in failure. Though her calls did end up activating what remains of the dead god's residue, ejecting herself from the powerful force entering her body and keeping her consiousness alive with a makeshift body it made. She stared, horrified at the mad god they had called upon, running away in despair as she hears their cries of massacre. Along the way, she stumbles upon Aesear, in the process of transforming into an Abyssal creature. She tried carrying her to safety but her lacking in strength and slowly slipping away from whatever body the residue had given her had proven it to be a futile effort. She hears Dainsleif stumble upon them, hurrying to the palace and looking into the distance at the Traveler's behest.
She calls out to him with hopes of being saved or taken to safety at the very least. He looks back, a split decision forming in his face before being snapped back by the shouting. He apologized, not wanting to look back at his heartless decision. Vanier stares in growing disbelief and confusion, finally realizing that no help will be coming on their way. In one last ditch effort, she held onto a piece of connection to her body, taunting the god residing in it and annoying it to the best of her abilities. The god felt her trying to slip back in, so in a last ditch effort, it brought her all the way outside of Teyvat, to the void of space (and apparently, the Sea of Quanta), where Tori can do nothing but curl over Aesear's still writhing body to protect themselves.
II. Akivili and the Nameless
It had only been a short while perhaps when she hears the echo of a god, a laughter and an amused sigh of something powerful. She can barely lift her eyes from the wrangled body she was still residing in, unable to even open her mouth to respond or sneer. It took pity on her, or perhaps the girl crying in pain from keeping her transformation at bay and gave her a much stable body to communicate with. Vanier questions its motive, not believing that gods could be so merciful and kindhearted without a goal. It simply made a deal with her: once their means of leaving had arrived, she should follow the Path of the Nameless and discover the universe through her own eyes. It leaves her confused but lucid enough to help seal of Aesear's memories to lessen the impact of the curse. With them being so far away from the source of the disaster and with the mysterious Aeon's appearance and help, it sealed off whatever curse the heavens brought upon her niece.
With nothing else left, Vanier closed her eyes, awaiting for that promised day the Aeon had foretold of. She doesn't quite remember for how long they drifted but the next thing she does recall is a huge machinery and a red-headed lady calling herself Himeko had offered for them to travel on the Astral Express. There she knew, that this was what that Aeon was talking about and proceeded to make herself part of the crew.
