Polaris

[ About ]

Polaris, the North Star, is the universal authority of constellation(nation) borders.

For a very long time, constellations had rather poorly defined borders. After the turbulent era of post-colonial independence movements and the Hydra-Argo Navis war, most felt that a more organized system was the only way to prevent such catastrophes from happening again. Polaris formed the borders after an alleged vision they were given from The Creator(religious figure that many constellations believe in), and stepped down as leader of Ursa Minor for their new position.

Polaris is very controversial, because of their recognition(or lack thereof) of certain countries. Most people either love or hate them, there's little in between.

Polaris is cordial and patient, though their actions aren’t always as pleasant as their demeanor. They’ll never just trip a random passerby on the street, of course; but they have used their administrative powers to do some deeds that are questionable at best, none of which they regret.

They are confident, but not arrogant, in their own moral compass. They don’t expect everyone to agree with their values, but they won’t change their mindset for other people either. They’d rather just agree to disagree.

They’re good at small talk, but slightly too serious to be considered “friendly.”

Not much, other than very obvious things like a near-death experience, can make them visibly upset or angry. When they’re losing their patience with someone, they’re much more likely to firmly tell them off than to get in a shouting match.

They can be very manipulative. Despite their reputation among enemies as an overt control freak, they’re actually a rather silent puppet master, who only meddles when they’re reasonably sure that it’s necessary. In other words, they don’t do it on a whim or for fun. But that’s not to say that they don’t find it fun.

[ Story & Trivia ]

Polaris was formerly the leader of Ursa Minor. During the era of exploration and colonialism, they openly supported the separatist nation of Crux within Centaurus, which did not sit well with the latter.

They transformed Crux into the navigational headquarters of the southern celestial hemisphere, just as Ursa Minor was to the north, and this alliance helped give Ursa Minor a surprising advantage over the rapidly forming colonies in the south.

When the Hydra-Argo Navis war broke out about 150 years later, Polaris opted to stay neutral. Their reasoning was that Ursa Minor was too important for navigation to allow politics to sway them. They didn’t worry that Crux had joined Hydra’s side, though, because it was evidently a losing battle for Argo Navis from the very start.

After this catastrophe of a war and the ensuing independence movements(more like revolutions) within the new colonies, most felt that there was an urgent need to fix the border problem. For a long time, constellations were more like tribes than countries, with borders that were vague at best.

Polaris was blessed with the answer in a prophetic dream that could only have been sent by the Creator. It occasionally granted some stars mythical abilities, such as Antares with his heart-reading powers, and it seemed that now it was Polaris’s turn. They had visions of physical borders forming between the constellations.

They wrote the Universal Declaration of Constellation Borders (UDCB) in preparation, including a map of what they had seen in their vision. Then, all they had to do was will the borders into existence, and thus they went up. This was when they stepped down as leader of Ursa Minor, to give the impression of political neutrality. Kochab took their place.

The UDCB understandably caused controversy, particularly for two reasons: nations whose existence was disputed, and stars living in remote locations that didn’t identify themselves with any country now having their land absorbed into the nearest one. Polaris made several trips around the celestial sphere to clear up some grievances, but they often just exacerbated them.
