Synopsis

Aiko's character is mostly built around the same idea as Ryo's, where the love they have becomes excessive to some extent. However, in Aiko's case, she shows a much different kind of love towards Ryo. She shows a love that becomes obsessive, unhealthy, and enables insanity. A love in which, she is desperate to keep something that never existed to begin with, yet still wants to pursue it in hopes that perhaps it would come to pass. Much like Ryo, she is written to never get the happy ending she wanted, and because of the time loop Ryo is forced into, Aiko is stuck in reliving this chase for her unrequited love, and will constantly be perished in the same fashion.

Story

dd3ypfw-846c35ed-4e57-45c1-976c-a52d7bd3chapter 1

In chapter one, Aiko didn't make much of an appearance, but she still makes herself known by sharing dialogue with Akira and Miki before leaving school grounds. When she spotted the bullies a few feet away from her, she decides to take a detour just to keep herself away from any confrontation with the bullies, only to end up watching the scene of those very bullies antagonizing Akira and Miki. She watched them, unsure of whether or not she should step in due to being nervous of the bad results that could take place if she were to intervene. But before she could make a decision, she stays put after landing eyes on Ryo, who threatens the bullies with his custom gun, and taking Akira away to show him the disturbing inheritance Ryo's father had left behind in his death.

Aiko was left amazed by the gutsy move to not only threaten the bullies with a gun, but to also be breaking the law by illegally owning a gun. Out of her own curiosity, she followed the two boys and made sure to keep herself hidden when they drove off, becoming much more amazed at how Ryo wasn't scared of the fact that he was breaking the law and was confused of this "enemy" that was after Ryo.

Near the end of the chapter, it is revealed that Aiko somehow managed to find her way into the Sabbath party, which led to her symbiotic relationship with Orochia. After escaping the Sabbath, Aiko blacks out, and wakes up to find herself in her room early the next morning. Her mind almost immediately went to Ryo and remembers his injuries from the Sabbath. With a need to see him, Aiko worried over her appearance until she decided to just wear the sundress outfit her mother got for her 18th birthday, and with no shoes to match, decided to walk barefoot.

chapter 2

Aiko only makes a brief appearance in chapter two. During Akira's visit with Ryo in the hospital, she is brought up in conversational flashbacks. Ryo was clearly uncomfortable with talking about the brief introduction he had with Aiko when she made her existence known. Apparently, in Ryo's case, Aiko had lied about being his girlfriend to the front desk, giving them a reason to let her have visiting hours despite them beginning in an hour or so. During her visit, Aiko did nothing but talk about her "love" for him, telling him words of praise, love, and admiration along with admitting that she never believed in love at first sight, until she laid eyes on Ryo. This led to Ryo being even more uncomfortable when he mentions the fact that apparently, Aiko has been stalking him since his admittance to the hospital, and has been watching him recover from a distance, to which, Ryo had absolutely no clue how Aiko even managed to figure out what hospital he was admitted in to begin with.

Ryo goes on to say that Aiko admits in the consideration of killing a nurse because she patched him up, but held back for the sake of letting him recover of his injuries from the Sabbath Party.

When Akira asks if she really was his girlfriend, Ryo declines, even says they never met until a couple hours ago, making this recollection their first time speaking and seeing one another. Akira later asks what happened to Aiko, and Ryo explains that she escaped from the hospital due to threatening a nurse by pointing a makeshift knife at her. Out of fear for her life, the nurse ran, and told the front desk to call an officer. With Aiko knowing the cops were going to be called on her, she forced a kiss on Ryo as her way of saying "goodbye" and climbed out through his window after letting him know that they will see each other again soon.

Even hearing this story from Ryo made Akira uncomfortable, revealing to Ryo that she is a friend of his and Miki's from their school, and even voices that he never expected Aiko to have this kind of side to her. While this did leave Akira somewhat concerned for her, the topic soon changed to the Sabbath party and demons, with Aiko not making another appearance after that.

chapter 3

In the third chapter, Aiko makes her appearance again by clearly stalking Ryo at the coffee shop he and Akira were relaxing in, listening in on their conversation about Akira's fight against the demons and finding Ryo's philosophies to be endearing. She ponders over whether or not she should make herself known to Ryo and Akira to let them know she was listening to their conversation, but decides not to, feeling it to be more romantic for her to watch a lover from afar rather than to continue chase. Though she voices her distaste of Akira being in the way and even finds herself becoming jealous that Ryo was spending his time with Akira and not her; completely ignoring the fact that they only met once.

Later on afterwards, Aiko continues to stalk him, curious of Ryo's research in looking for people who have irrational violence in the past couple of weeks. However, she decides to end her stalking for the next day, wanting to surprise Ryo of her appearance and spend time with him.

Aiko makes her appearance again during the sudden merging of demons and humans, watching both parties die in the process of trying to merge. She monologues her amusement of the situation at hand, and gets excited the moment her eyes lay on Ryo from a distance. She quickly makes herself known to him and clings to him, not even caring of his clear discomfort. She goes on to talk about spending the day together despite the ghastly situation happening before them and even thinks that the situation at hand for the two of them was romantic. It only left Ryo even more uncomfortable and even annoyed. When Akira and Ryo met up again, both he and Aiko were surprised to see each other again, especially under the circumstances of society falling apart, with Ryo going on with his speech of fear and madness. While it did leave Aiko wondering where Ryo's head lie, she brushed it off and continued to cling to him, quickly voicing her argument in blind defense of Ryo after Akira goes on to say about courage.

She makes a speech about how fear derives all humans from gaining courage, due to the inability to think clearly because of the fear that consumes them. This led to both men being rather shocked of her side of things, yet she continues, later berating Akira for his argument of courage. This led to Akira being rather pissed with her, continuing to argue over the matter until Ryo concludes it. Aiko later follows after Ryo, wanting to spend as much time with him as possible for the impending disasters ahead. It wasn't until later did Aiko appear yet again, still clinging to Ryo with the two of them to have been watching the news of all that was happening.

chapter 4

In chapter four, Aiko was clearly upset and disgusted at Ryo trying to convince Akira to not go out there and fight alongside the other Devilmen he was going to be rounding up from around the world. It left her with the sudden need to get rid of Akira in hopes that perhaps, Ryo would shift his focus to her, especially after witnessing Akira strike Ryo for trying to convince him to stay.

When Akira left to fight, Aiko told Ryo to stay, telling him "he'll get what's coming for not listening to you".

With an insane hunger for destroying the competition (aka Akira), Aiko goes on to say that she'll gladly listen to whatever Ryo tells her, that she'll stay if he were to ask him to, and fight when he asks her to, making this speech that states how she's willing to give her life to him if it meant he'd love her back. Ryo, seeming amused of this advantage, tells Aiko to leave, and he'll call her when he needs her. Without much thinking and out of pure excitement, Aiko willingly leaves. However, she still felt the unquestionable thirst for killing Akira, and goes on her trek to find him, deciding that she needed to rid him of his existence in order for Ryo to put his entire focus on her. She states in her monologue that she's fully aware how badly it will hurt Ryo, considering how they had a close friendship, yet voices her lack of compassion for that fact.

Before Akira's moment to round up the other Devilmen, Aiko manages to stop Akira. She goes on this speech of the lack of love and compassion she felt from both of her parents, saying how she had grown to hate them and how she had grown to hate him. Not just for the fact that he was in the way of a blooming love between her and Ryo, but also because of the fact that even without his biological family members around, he was still surrounded by people who showed him love, compassion and support no matter what, even going so far as to accuse Miki to be his girlfriend. Her resentment continued to pile throughout her speech, and even begun to transform into her demonic snake form during the midst of it as a way to challenge Akira to a one on one battle as the city crumbled.

Akira warned her to not try to fight him.

In fact, gave her a warning that if she tried to fight him, she will end up dying in the process.

Yet she held little to no concern for her own life. She responds with a lack of a care for her life and well-being, even stating how Ryo had given her a purpose without him even knowing.

It left Akira feeling pity for Aiko rather than empathetic. His monologue states that Aiko is a lost cause, that no matter what he said, nothing was going to change her mind, and even admitting that he could see the genuine feelings she was feeling for Ryo, but unfortunately understood too little of what love actually is and how it worked. With this realization in mind, Akira accepts the challenge in fighting against Aiko and won the battle in the end due to Aiko's irrational attacks. Aiko was soon left injured, and questions Akira if he was going to kill her.

He rejects such notion, telling her he still sees her a dear friend that he talks to at school, and continues on his mission to gather the Devilmen and stop the demon army from approaching; frustrated that he wasted too much time.

Meanwhile, Aiko was left in the crumbling asphalt of the street bleeding and injured, her dress now torn, her sash and ribbons disheveled. With what little strength she had left, Aiko managed to stand back on her feet and make her way back to Ryo, where she had confidence of being safe with him without the realization of Ryo's plans to use her loyalty to his benefit.

chapter 5

Aiko was seen one last time with her finally reaching back to Ryo, finding herself shocked to discover that Ryo was in fact Satan under the guise of another human being who once lived in the past under the pretense that he lived a normal life. While this did leave Aiko rather frightened, she found herself excited more than scared, and willingly pledged her loyalty to Satan. Though Aiko wanted to transform into Orochia, she kept her Devilman form under wraps as to show her defenseless form during her pledge of loyalty and love for him.

After Aiko gave confirmation that she was willing to do anything Satan asked of her, Satan had decapitated her head from her shoulders, making that very pledge the very final time she had ever spoken and the final time she makes an appearance---unable to hear Satan's first order, to which, was to simply die.

Alternate Ending

Around chapter 4 of the Devilman Manga, there is an alternative ending that determines the fate between both Ryo and Aiko, and it's not much of a happier ending than the original. Aiko still rather upset with Ryo's choice in trying to stop Akira from gathering the Devilmen, she begins to feel as though she was going to snap at any given moment should Ryo persist in his persuasion with Akira. She only continues to witness the argument, and feels her mind completely snap after Akira strikes Ryo and leaves the complex to do his own bidding.

With Aiko's mind now completely in shambles and jealousy seathing through her body, Aiko reveals to be carrying a knife on her person, and was about to rush after Akira, but was stopped by Ryo. As a result, it only made things much worse, with her emotions now out of control.

Her anger was now reacing to it's peak, and this time, the target soon turned to Ryo, due to the fact that Ryo was trying to protect Akira from Aiko's rampage.

This led to a chase throughout the apartment, Aiko making swings of her blade in hopes to cause a fatal wound, or any sort of damage that could harm Ryo greatly. With Orochia's strength, and her newfound speed, Aiko managed to catch up to Ryo, pinning him against the wall with a knife to his neck. It was now made pretty clear that Aiko was no longer thinking rationally; emotions spiraling out of control mixed with jealousy, and Aiko only continued to voice her hatred for Ryo putting all of his attention on Akira, and not her.

At this point, Aiko began to form sickening ideas, until finally, she found the best solution to end all of this, was to have Ryo meet his fate rather early in his life. Because of that fear, Ryo manages to escape her grasp, but it only managed to anger Aiko much further. Another chase began, this time, outside of the apartment, and throughout the complex. With the demons reviving one by one, it was hard to notice a woman chasing after a man due to her blood lust.

The blood lust being later fulfilled.

After many failed attempts of trying to maim Ryo, Aiko finally managed to land a strike upon Ryo's back, causing him to collapse from the pain. Aiko took this as an opportunity to continuously stab him multiple times until his body became limp and he exhaled his last breath.

With the body now completely useless, Aiko found that the only valuable thing to keep of Ryo, was his head. And so, with the idea in mind, she used the very same knife to slice Ryo's head off his shoulders, keeping it close to her as though it was a precious item to behold and immediately walks back to Ryo's apartment to forever torture herself of the death of her unrequited lover.

Due to Ryo's death, this led to the demon army no longer having a leader to control their actions, or make detailed plans of attack. Because of this, it led to the Devilmen winning against the demon army, with them being forced back into the depths of hell, and humanity was given a chance to revive into what it once was before. As for Aiko..she remained as a shut in. Only keeping herself entertained by coddling the very head of Ryo she kept to herself; her health clearly deteriorating by the days.
