Vyra ***

A mute half-elf girl who came to the New World through a portal when she was nine

Vyra is very shy around people that she doesn't know (some people would even say "fearful"... and they're probably right) but may try to "talk" to them if only to keep from seeming rude. When she is nervous, which tends to be more often than not, she may become overly polite and a bit clumsy. She is a kind, quiet person who loves animals, nature, and books. Vyra has very little confidence, but this slowly starts to improve once she's freed.

I’m still trying to decide if she can use magic but I’m kind of leaning towards giving her some type of psychic/psionic abilities

Vyra is the younger daughter of an elven shadehunter named Kassani. For the first four years of her life, they lived in the woods, traveling constantly. Her older half-sister, Eliyen, would often end up taking care of her while their mother was busy, despite still being young herself. When Vyra was four, Kassani was killed. She and Eliyen soon joined Ariava's tribe. About two years later, Eliyen found a baby griffin while out hunting. He was too young to survive on his own, so she gave him to Vyra to take care of. She named Red. When Vyra was nine, another tribe member, a friend of Eliyen's who was a half-elf like Vyra, was turned into a shade.

Believing that Vyra would only be safe in the New World, away from the plague, the two sisters tried to go through a unstable portal. Red ran through it and Vyra followed him, but it collapsed before Eliyen could go through it. The instability of the portal caused Vyra to lose her memories. She woke up near a small town on an island, but since she was mute and almost no one on the island knew sign language, Vyra found it difficult to communicate with the people there. Eventually she learned that there was an organization on the island that had been searching for and capturing magic users and magical creatures, which meant that her being half elf only made people less willing to accept her, even though she couldn't use magic.

Luuckily it wasn't too long before Vyra's life seemed to take a turn for the better. While walking in the woods with Red, they ran into a girl around the same age as Vyra who seemed to be lost. She was frightened and ran from them at first, but it didn't take too long for her to figure out that they weren't a threat. Vyra learned that the other girl's name was Arlo. Talking with her was a bit slow at first since Arlo only knew a little bit of sign language, but she was a fast learner, and Vyra was happy to teach her. For awhile Arlo refused to go into the village, preferring to stay at the edge of the forest, but Vyra eventually convinced her to come with her. Wandering the village streets and forest, the two grew to think of each other as sisters. The differences that had made so many other avoid her never seemed to bother Arlo- if anything, Arlo seemed to like that she was different.

Several months later, the two were caught stealing food by an innkeeper called Kerah. Though she seemed angry at first, Kerah quickly grew concerned when she realized that the girls had no homes or families and offered to take them in.

Unfortunately she was captured at around thirteen by the same organization that had killed Arlo's parents and was basically became their slave. Vyra was not allowed to go outside and rarely allowed near windows. Red, who was there when she was taken and had attempted to protect her, was also captured and kept in a small enclosure to be studied.

A slave to *Maverick’s (placeholder name still lol) organization, Vyra is treated poorly by most of its members and is often the victim of verbal, and on some unfortunate occasions physical, abuse. She decides quickly that it’s best for her to do what she’s told and avoid doing anything that could anger them.

After around six years there, she accidentally runs into Lucian, the adoptive son of the organization's leader, while carrying a stack of files to someone. Though not exactly friendly, he’s nicer to her than the others have been and (noticing her bruises and fear) actually seems concerned about her condition. Later he comes back to ask what happened and they continue to meet afterwards until Lucian fully switches sides and desides to leave, also freeing Vyra and Red and helping them esacpe.

They’re on the run for awhile with no idea where to go that would be safe, then one night, Red runs off into the forest and leads them to a portal. Before Lucian and Vyra really have a chance to discuss it, Red goes through the portal and they quickly follow him back into the First World. Vyra doesn’t get her memories back then, but something about the place seems oddly familiar and it isn’t long before Red leads them to something else, or rather, someone else. Arlo, traveling with two people Vyra doesn’t recognize called Jasper and Eliyen.

Though Vyra doesn’t know Eliyen, she can’t help but feel that the older elf hasn’t been acting normal since Vyra joined the group. Arlo had introduced Jasper and Eliyen to her as her friends, but Eliyen seems like she’s mad at Arlo all the time, and she barely looks at Vyra. Finally Vyra gets tired of wondering what’s going on and works up the courage to ask her. Though Eliyen tries to avoid the question at first she eventually breaks down and tells Vyra the truth- that she’s her sister and was the one who sent her to the new world in an attempt to keep her safe, that the portal collapsed when she went through it and that’s why she can’t remember anything from before, that she’d searched for her years but had eventually given up, that, until Red had come charging out of the woods in front of her, she’d been afraid she was dead. At first Vyra is overwhelmed by the information, but the more she thinks about it, the more it makes sense. It takes awhile, but eventually they start to reconnect.
