Sycamore is a very flawed woman. She's very no nonsense, while also trying to be motherly. In her original colony, she was pressured to abandon the only survivor of her litter because he was seen as a bad omen. While lamenting what she had done, she found The King and fell in love with him. She raised Lain right beside him for most of Lain's life. The King and her eventually had a child of their own, and named him Aster. Once the King started his conquest, he gave Sycamore the title of general. Their relationship began to fall apart as the King became more and more power hungry.

The King still allowed Sycamore to be in the army as a general, but in charge of a unit as far away from him as possible. She took Aster with her to her new post, and left Lain and the King behind. The moment she heard of the King's death and the lost war, she put the needs of her trope first, and started heading towards the mountains.
