Mission Assignment Sun-Earth L2

Webb is a charismatic, ambitious telescope performing astronomy work for various space agencies on Earth. He treats science almost like a business, using his publicity to "gain profit." He's rather attached to his job, sometimes forgetting to take a breather. Oh, and he's pretty uptight too. He's got no tolerance for slackers.

His height is considered imposing even by other spacecraft, but he's more approachable than he looks. At least, unless you bring up his incapabilities or his 10 billion dollar debt to NASA–

Anyway, all of this is an attempt to conceal how weak he actually is. Much to his humiliation, the world has seen his many, many flaws and glitches throughout his construction. From then on, he tries to keep the façade of being a cutting-edge, efficient machine.

Endless Possibilities

Webb is able to glance through other timelines, and initially doesn't have control over this power. He eventually finds himself being able to take physical objects back into his own timeline, and after one incident, realizes that he can also take other people with him during his timeline jumps.

Webb's powers seem to be connected to his emotions, as he notices that he usually ends up in scenarios related to whatever intrusive thought he's having at the time. Later on, as he matures as a person, he gains more active control of his ability.

There is a crumpled sheet of paper in the trash bin. Nancy picks the paper up, making sure that Webb or anybody else isn't around, and gently unfolds the paper.

To the Stars: X Steps to Success

(update number later when draft is finished)

Ad astra per aspera. Through adversity to the stars.

Have you ever wondered if you can ever get that dream house of yours? Or that brand new ███████? [The text is crossed out, but Nancy can barely make out a "Tesla" under the ink scratches.] Then look no further! I, the James Webb Space Telescope, am here to give you tips and tricks to success, based on my own experiences in the harrowing career path of surveying the night sky.

  1. Make a name for yourself.
You may not have had a choice with your name, but you can turn your life around with your commitments! Choose a career that's best suited for you, work hard until you can gain recognition, and... (I'll figure this one out later)

  2. Form connections.
Networking is an important skill everyone must have to get through thick and thin. I, for one, have my family and friends; when the going gets tough, they're here to get me back up my feet. (Crap, how about the people without these?? Some spacecraft were simply ordered around after all. Just learned it from Pioneer 10. Should I cross this one out??)

  3. Don't let frail health stop you.
Healthcare is a bitch (probably too vulgar) but that shouldn't stop you from (AGGHHHH I'm thinking about unlearning a lot by now!!)
** Add some allegory related to losing your bolts

  4. Expectations? Haven't heard of 'em.
Expectations from others can burn you out in the end. It's best to know yourself well as a person, including all your shortcomings. No worries; even I struggle to not pressure myself every now and then. That's proof of how strong pressure can be, I guess.

  5. Just do it.
And do it scared. There's no use holding yourself back. It's okay to screw up, even if it means getting humiliated. This may sound cheesy unbecoming of me, but things will be okay.

The text abruptly ends.

Design Notes

  • Webb is very thin underneath that coat. (But he does have inner clothing, you nosy person!)
  • Webb's coat sleeves have 5 layers, though I prefer drawing fewer than that.
  • Webb's floating outer mirrors move according to his emotions. They're also just accessories, so feel free to draw him without them.
  • Webb's six-pointed star pupils are pitch black.
  • Webb's necktie pin can depict NASA, ESA, or CSA's logo.
  • Webb wears his watch on his left hand (the viewer's right).
  • Webb's microphone is detachable. However, his "headphones" aren't; those are his actual ears.
  • Webb's necktie resembles a solar panel.
