SUMMARY

Chanto had always been excited to be a biologist. Her fascination with plants, her love of the world around her, the inspiration that she took from her mother -- well, it all seemed to fall together with her new job. A young forensic biologist working for the Forensics team, Chanto brings a measure of joy to the otherwise-gruesome division. Despite her enthusiastic personality, she genuinely cares about the people that she's working with, the people that she's trying to save; it's evident in the respect that she shows towards her colleagues, the sympathy that she shows towards the families and friends of the viscerosis victims brought to their clinic. With her two best friends with her on the job, too, what disease can't she help find a cure for?

Caught in the middle of everything, Chanto can't help but yearn for a simpler time -- one where people aren't missing, where her friends haven't changed past the point of no return, where she can just be who she is without feeling so alone about it all. She wishes that she could've done more. She knows that even if she'd tried, it wouldn't have made a difference.

Personality

Excitable and friendly, Chanto's often described by the people around her as a 'ray of sunshine.' Usually seen with a smile on her face and her head in the clouds, it feels like she lights up every room she walks into. She's genuinely caring towards the people around her, wanting nothing more than to see other people feel just as happy as she usually does. She deeply cherishes all of her friends and acquaintances, having a natural sense of empathy that allows her to pick up on other's moods and emotions very quickly. As a result, she's usually the first on the scene to offer comfort, a kind word, a shoulder to cry on -- even if she can get emotional easily as well, shedding tears whenever she feels too much for the other person at one time. She's quick to express herself, usually wearing her heart on her sleeve, but she does her best to hold herself back whenever she knows that other people need her to support them.

Her scatterbrained nature makes it difficult for her to succeed at any long, tedious tasks -- even if her problems with organizing her own work have improved as she's matured over the years, of course. Chanto was never the top student in her classes during college, but her hard work and determination to succeed more than made up for it; when she sets her mind to something, she'll put her whole heart into making it happen. She's a brilliant event planner, being able to organize and corral all of her friends into clearing time in their schedules just to hang out with each other. No matter what obstacles get in her way, Chanto trusts that she'll have people to back her up the whole time -- genuinely believing that most people are just as good-hearted as she is.

Trivia

  • Because of her tendency to be late to school, she knew that she desperately needed an alarm clock to stop herself from being late to work. She didn't trust herself with just a phone alarm, so she ended up buying a cute alarm clock and placing it as far away from her bed as possible so that she has to physically walk over to it and turn it off every morning.
  • Aaron was Chanto's tutor in early college, eventually teaching her how to be more organized in her day-to-day life -- encouraging her to buy a planner, showing her ways to remember events and obligations that she'd otherwise blank out on entirely, giving her methods to keep her desk and personal space as neat as she possibly can. She still keeps a planner and schedule because of him.
  • Even though Chanto normally doesn't use curse words, Duncan's the only person that can get her to actually swear -- mostly because she loves to sibling-bully and annoy him. She'll call him a "bitch" and a "bastard" (and, really, whatever else you can think of) as terms of both annoyance and endearment.
  • You can't leave Kay and Chanto alone in a room together, especially not to do any "real" work together. Both of them are naturally messy and disorganized; Aaron will leave them together for twenty minutes, come back with a cup of coffee, and the office will look like a tornado just passed through it.
  • Chanto often seeks Clarence out for book recommendations, given that the other members of the Investigation Division are more invested in realistic novels while Clarence enjoys horror, fantasy, sci-fi... anything and everything that isn't about real life. Clarence is probably the only person in the entire Investigation Division that gives Chanto semi-plausible advice on how to approach her crush on Laverne (based on WikiHow articles and relationship blogs, given that they've never had a relationship of their own).
  • Even though Tolys isn't actually Chanto's boss or superior in any way, she thinks that he is because of his degree, his age, and how knowledgeable he is. She looks up to him a lot. Tolys has never bothered correcting this misconception.
  • Chanto doesn't drink, but she'll still go out with the other members of the Investigation Division to watch them and have a good time. Even though she hates driving (it's bad for the environment!), she'll always begrudgingly end up either driving them home or calling a taxi/Uber so they can get home.
Relationships

Best friend

"Ohmygosh, I LOVE Aaron! He's the funniest person I know, and I mean... well, look at him! Mister 'big name detective' over here, hehe. I mean, he's my best friend ever, I'm so lucky to have gotten to know him!"

Chanto's known Aaron since the two of them were in college together. When they first met, Chanto looked up to basically everything about Aaron -- harboring the smallest crush on him that slowly faded away as the two of them got closer. She still admires Aaron for his intelligence and charisma, of course. She's just... also been Aaron's relationship counselor for years on end. The two of them get along like a house on fire, visiting each other during their breaks as much as they can -- while working together to embarrass Duncan.

"Best" friend / Rival

"We're literally working together, and Duncan's still the bitchiest fucker I know. Haha! Well, he's grown up a lot since he got together with Aaron, but that doesn't stop him from being annoying... towards me, at least!"

Even though Chanto used to actively despise Duncan, that hatred slowly developed over time into a begrudging tolerance, then an unwilling friendship, then a close siblinghood (even though they still actively try to beat each other up on the regular). Chanto loves bullying Duncan, given how easy it is to get under his skin. At the same time, though, Chanto deeply appreciates the reliability of their friendship. They might act like rivals, but she knows that Duncan will always be a shoulder for her to lean on if she needs one.

Friend / Coworker

"Don't let Duncan hear me say this, but, um... I think Kay is totally hilarious! Hehe, sure, they can be, um... prickly? At times? So um, I get it, but... They're so funny, oh my gosh. Have you seen their Tweets?"

Chanto was, like most people, thrown off by Kay's general aura of unfriendliness at first. It only took a bit of time, however, for them to warm up to each other. She might find Kay to be a bit too mean, at times, but it's easy for her to get over it -- given how Kay's deadpan jokes make her literally howl with laughter. She and Kay gossip whenever they get a spare moment (and Aaron and Duncan aren't there to hear), telling each other every juicy little interpersonal detail they've managed to gather from within their Divisions.

Friend / Coworker

"Well, um... I dunno! I don't think Clarence is a bad person, I just think they don't like to talk whenever they're not around Kay. And don't think that I'm not trying! He seems super smart, but just a bit, um... distant?"

While Chanto might not be too close with Clarence, it's certainly not for lack of trying. She's gotten hints of his "true" self whenever she's talking to Kay and Clarence at the same time -- but it's hard for her to pry non-small-talk conversation out of Clarence when he's on his own. She appreciates the fact that Clarence is always willing to approach her "crush on Laverne" situation with her, though. Sure, Clarence might just be there to watch the drama -- but he definitely gives the most reasonable advice out of the team.

"Boss"

"Tolys! Um, I promised him I'd get that analysis done earlier but, um, I haven't gotten to it yet, please don't say anything! I know he'll just laugh and say it's fine, but it's so, so embarrassing to be caught like that!"

If she's being honest, Chanto's a bit intimidated by how... everything Tolys is. To her, he seems to have it all: a published academic, obviously smart, charismatic, friendly, and he likes plants the way that she does, at that? She can get a bit flustered whenever the two of them talk, crushing on him in a superficial way just because of his status as a supposed authority figure that still makes time for the two of them to get a coffee, from time to time. Nobody's sure when she'll realize that Tolys is literally just her coworker -- and not her actual boss.
