Chanto
01 — Profile

Chanto is incredibly bubbly and friendly, constantly reaching out to others to make and maintain the friendships that she holds so dearly. Deep down, however, she's determined to improve herself -- and determined not to let herself ever be helpless again. She learned her lesson the first time, having lost almost all her friends to the incident that almost broke the Virion Project apart.

02 — Personality

Bubbly, friendly, and genuinely kind towards the people around her, Chanto practically lights up every room she walks into. She has a natural sense of empathy that makes it easy for her to get along with people. Cherishing every relationship she makes, she's always the first person to try to befriend strangers, talk to people who look and feel left out of groups, reach out whenever she thinks that somebody is struggling. It's hard not to smile whenever she's around, given how she's always making jokes and engaging people in conversation. Chanto never wants the mood in the room to be too heavy. If you can get all your work done when the atmosphere is light and happy, why indulge in your own worry and stress?

If you spend enough time with her, however, you get a strange sense of just how much weight she carries on her own shoulders. She does a fantastic job of hiding it -- never leaving her house without a smile and doing her best to maintain the same amount of energy that she had when she was younger -- but the Outbreak Incident affected her badly, no matter how much she tries to move on. Deep down, Chanto feels a strong sense of guilt because she had to watch her former friends suffer, while being simultaneously unable to do anything about any of it. Even though, logically, she knows that she wouldn't have been able to help even if she'd been there, she can't help but feel the urge to have been there to try.

Determined not to let anything happen to her, her friends, or the Virion Project ever again, Chanto spends a lot of time around other people, both in and out of her Division. She loves talking with others, making connections and drawing people closer and closer together, ensuring that the ties between them can't and won't snap when it comes down to the wire. She's determined to constantly improve herself, constantly training with her essence in ways that she'd never dream of when she was younger. Even though she has to hide it from Aaron and Duncan to stop them from worrying, she can't stand the idea of being idle or useless in the case of another Outbreak. She never wants to feel as lonely and helpless as she did in the days right after the Incident again, wishing beyond hope for time to be turned back.

03 — Background

Past

The only child to her father, a meteorologist, and her mother, a biologist, Chanto lived a very happy life when she was a child. She was incredibly close with both her parents, taking a natural interest in biology, horticulture, and gardening that her family helped her cultivate ever since she was young. Every summer, they would always travel out to their family farm, where Chanto would help tend to their fruits and vegetables while playing in the dirt and roaming the countryside. She'd always preferred outdoor life to her life in the city, and dreaded coming back home to her classes -- none of which interested her when she was a kid, given that she'd always learned better when given the chance to explore and play in a hands-on setting.

While her parents never quite pressured Chanto academically, Chanto knew that they expected her to grow up into a good person, above all else. She loved making friends, never being afraid to talk and joke with older kids and always making rounds in her neighborhood to play with anybody who was willing to goof off with her. At the same time, however, it took her a long time to realize that being friendly didn't mean that she always had to be a pushover. It was easy for people to drag her around and play mean jokes on her, particularly when she was younger. Wanting to keep her friends, no matter what the cost, Chanto blindly trusted almost everybody that she met. She would even cry whenever people told her that they didn't want to be friends with her anymore -- often leading to embarrassing phone calls being made to her parents.

By the time she entered college, Chanto had grown up a bit -- certainly being less gullible and innocent than she was as a kid. On her first day, she was incredibly optimistic about everything she would do and everybody she would finally meet as an undergraduate student. Her perspective immediately changed, of course, when she literally ran into her two future best friends: Aaron Vesre and Duncan Ferelle. After ruining Duncan's expensive textbooks by splashing food and water all over them, Chanto was worried that she was going to go to prison on her first day of orientation -- only for college junior Aaron, her future tutor, to come in and offer to pay for the damages.

The three of them have been inseparable since... even though Aaron was constantly breaking up fights between Chanto and Duncan the first few months that they knew each other. Chanto would constantly wingman Duncan, embarrassing him and encouraging him (and pushing him) into acting on his obvious feelings for Aaron; nobody cheered louder than Chanto did when she heard that they'd finally gotten together in Aaron's senior year. Convinced by Aaron's stories about the success that he'd found at the Virion Project, Chanto would apply for the Forensics Division as an intern the year after, wanting to make her family proud by pursuing a career in forensic biology after she'd so diligently studied the subject during university.

Virion Project

Even though Chanto was intimidated by the other, far-more-adult (and far-more-serious) members of her Division, she quickly grew accustomed to her work -- working as hard as she could to pick up as much information and knowledge as she could during her first few months as an intern. She would spend most of her time hanging out outside of her own Division, however, finding Aaron and Duncan's work as Investigators to be just as fascinating as her own. To Duncan's despair, Chanto would become quick friends with Kay Mironov and Clarence Rheuma, the other two members of the Investigation Division. She and Kay quickly became Duncan's worst nightmare -- often to Aaron and Clarence's amusement.

The first few years Chanto spent as a member of the Forensics Division taught her that she had a far stronger stomach than she ever thought she did when she was in school... and that she was far more capable than she ever thought herself to be, given the lowered expectations that she'd always had for herself. Her slow growth into maturity would be kickstarted by the Outbreak Incident, however. She had intended on going out on the doomed mission with them earlier that day, but the Investigators had insisted that she stay safe at the company building. By the time they came back, it was too late for Chanto to do anything. Her friends had been severely hurt, and she hadn't been there to help.

The all-encompassing sense of guilt and regret that Chanto felt would only be compounded by the aftermath of the Incident: with Aaron and Duncan breaking up while Clarence and Kay disappeared into thin air, for the first time in her life, Chanto felt truly and completely alone. It took her a long time to slowly build herself out of the pit that she'd been trapped in. Determined to never let something like the Incident happen again, Chanto became more sociable than ever, surrounding herself with people and constantly trying to expand her support systems. At the same time, even knowing that Aaron and Duncan would've wanted her to stay safe, Chanto couldn't help but start secretly training with her essence. She started joining Set after-hours just to practice how to fight, while constantly thinking of ways to improve her workflow and efficiency in day-to-day life.

At times, Chanto genuinely feels exhausted having to act as a mediator between Aaron and Duncan. The two of them refuse to talk to each other -- while insisting on talking and maintaining their friendships with her. She hopes that, with enough time and with enough patience, she'll be able to mend the rifts in her friend group that she misses so much. As long as she keeps her head high, tries not to worry about things, and looks towards the future, things have no choice but to get better.

04 — Trivia

  • Despite not showing it to others, her essence use and training enables her to use her plant growth for combat. She can make thorny vines grow from the ground and control them offensively, or throw a bunch of seeds and grow them quickly to serve as a barrier against attacks. She dislikes using her essence aggressively, but will do anything in order to protect others.

  • Unconsciously, Chanto's emotions tend to influence the growth and health of the plants around her. Whenever she's happy, every plant in the room blooms a little brighter; if she's upset enough, the plants around her can straight up wilt and die.

  • Chanto used to be a lot messier when she was younger, but, over time, she's drastically improved her organization habits. It took her a long time to develop a workable system with her planner, Post-it notes, and colorful reminders on her phone, but she rarely forgets anything the way she used to.

  • At home, she has a set of plants that she's named after her old friends in the former Investigation Division. She refuses to use essence on them and cares for them diligently every day, always talking with them and telling them about her feelings.

  • Whenever she needs to stay up late either to finish work or when she's asked to, she usually takes sugar rather than caffeine. She usually has a bar of chocolate or two in her bag because of this, but sometimes it ends up as a huge chunk instead of individual squares because they... melt in her bag.

  • Aside from sweets, her favorite foods include vegetable soups, salads, and fresh fruit platters. She rarely eats meat -- only if it's the only kind of dish available or if other people offer it to her. When she cooks at home, most of her ingredients are home-grown (especially her herbs and spices).

05 — Relationships

matvei.gif
division head

”Aw, isn't he such a pain? Hehe... well, that's how I thought about him when I was younger, at least. He's great at his job, honest, and I don't even mind having him as a boss! But, um... well, I can definitely see where other people are coming from, ha.”

Chanto used to be a lot more scared of Matvei -- when she first joined the Virion Project as an intern, his strict adherence to all the rules (and the fact that he'd demand that she work for the whole time she was at work, unbelievable) always made him feel like an ornery old professor.

Given how long they've spent together, though, Chanto's learned to find a lot of his habits far more tolerable than she found them to be in the past. She can tell that he genuinely cares about his work and genuinely cares about the people in his Division, no matter how hard he tries to school them all into line -- and really, that's all she can ask for in a boss.

musika.gif
coworker

”Musika's... er. Well, she doesn't like to be around people much, but I'd still love to learn more about her! Like, I think she'd be really interesting to get to know, but... um. Well, you know how it is!”

No matter how much she tries to quell her own feelings of anxiety, Chanto can't help but admit that Musika makes her feel a little... scared? It's not like she genuinely feels like Musika's a danger to her -- all she does is float around the lab, mixing weird, experimental chemicals and running tests on viscerosis samples -- but being around a living ghost definitely wasn't one of the things that Chanto signed up for when she first joined the Project.

Chanto genuinely wishes that she could get to know Musika better, making friends with her the way that she makes friends with everyone else. If only she could find that one little small-talk thing the two of them have in common!

elizaveta.gif
coworker

”Eliza's the BEST. I can't believe she still puts up with me, after having known me since I was an intern here -- kidding, kidding! Hehe, do you think she'll let me take another look at her personal sketchbook if I ask nicely enough?”

Chanto's always been impressed by Elizaveta's artwork, particularly given the speed that she needs in order to put her sketches out quickly enough at crime scenes. For somebody that's always arguing with Matvei all the time, Chanto finds it somewhat surprising, honestly, that Elizaveta could be so nice to her! She always offers to help Elizaveta around the office, picking out and arranging samples for her to make them easier to draw when the time comes to it.

For better or for worse, Chanto often indulges Elizaveta in a lot of her fortune-telling and superstition, as well -- which sometimes makes Chanto just a bit anxious, wondering what those cryptic clues at the bottom of her coffee mugs could be telling her...

dioe.gif
intern

”I'm so glad that I'm not the youngest person on the team anymore, ohmygosh. Dioe's adorable! They come off as so cool and collected all the time, and they know so much about their work already... I wish I was like that when I was in college!”

Dioe's hardworking, smart, and shows a genuine interest in biology -- even if Chanto's convinced that they seem just a little bit too invested in the surgeries and dissections that Chanto always demos for them. She's always excited to talk to Dioe about their newest discoveries, though; the two of them share the same fundamental excitement about finding new things that drew Chanto towards the subject in the first place.

Deep in her heart, Chanto wishes that she could've been as mature and well-adjusted at Dioe's age as Dioe seems to be. Maybe if she'd studied that hard or trained that hard, the Outbreak Incident wouldn't have happened the way that it did.
