Odd Phenomenon

Odd Phenomenon is loosely based on the Freudian idea of the human psyche, in which each parts of the psyche are splintered into metaphysical manifestations, in which they both exist and do not. It is an articulated concept made to understand creations produced from automatism, as well as an original Universe that functions as a character world. 

The psyches assume a loose Freudian definition, and although they assume a materialist form, their functions are left largely intact according to the theory. The psyches are contained within an entity named Loey, in which the psyches respectively are named Joey (the Id), Loey (the Ego) and the Superego. Odd Phenomenon escapes the Freudian confines by adding two external presence: Sally and Tar. Odd Phenomenon largely explores the imbalance of mind, caused by dysfunction and miscoordination of the psyches, resulting in extreme or otherwise behaviours that fall out of normalcy. As many things created for Odd Phenomenon stems from automatism, each of the illustration's concept does not hold a translatable idea until it is completed. Odd Phenomenon serves as a personal read into the unconscious mind.

Psyches

Loey as the body hosts all three psyches, including one that assumes his own name and appearance. It is easier to think of the body as a puppet, shared by three controllers, two of which who cannot agree on how to control the puppet, while the remaining one assumes the job of appeasing and compromising the other two but chooses not to all the same. The balance of all three is salient in order to properly function.

The Id

The Id is formed at birth; it is the core, instinctual drive of the body—a pure expression of genetics and evolution. It does not operate by logic, nor does it heed by what is realistic. Its decisions are made to ensure survival and its choices are made out of impulse; after all, he who thinks of running the fastest is likelier to outrun the bear chasing him.

The Ego

The Ego is the process thinking; it is rational, realistic, and logical. Essentially the opposite of the Id and formed through growth, it solves problems through logic, though it will do anything to obtain the pleasure of solving a problem regardless of its consequences. If the Id works by instinct, the Ego works by reason. It does not regard moral.

The Superego

The Superego functions to control the Id and the Ego out of its extreme functions. It controls the Id's impulses, and controls the ego to be more moralistic rather than strive for complete perfection. Think of it as a buffer to ensure that decisions made are moralistic and conform to social expectations. The Superego is made of two parts:

The Conscience
This part of the Superego concerns itself with controlling the Id and the Ego, restricting extremist choices made by either. It exerts control by punishment, causing feelings of guilt.

The Ideal
The Ideal ensures that the decisions made are moralistic or otherwise conform to the self's ideals and aspirations, as well as ensure that it falls into acceptable standards. As circumstances constantly change, it is the Ideal's job to assess the outward situation and ensure that the decision made is one that does not conflict with the body's morals or goals.

Background

The concept of Odd Phenomenon and its Freudian bastardization was, much like other concepts, made from automatism, reflected on articulated theories in order for it to become digestible. Its conception is dated somewhere around Summer 2018, with no definitions besides its characters, before a story was poured into it. While it has mainly served as a guidebook to interpreting Odd Phenomenon's illustrations, it now functions as its own world, serving as a bidirectional guide on what form to draw, and how to interpret the completed concept.

Automatism

Surrealist automatism refers to the method of little or no prior planning towards the creation of art. True "automatism" does not exist—the artist, after all, is compelled to create rationalised decisions in order to confine the art into a digestible picture; but besides the characters drawn and the medium chosen, many—if not a majority—of Odd Phenomenon's work is made by small, yet many instantaneous decisions. Its overarching concept is decided by the last second's thought, without bridging it together; the art of following one's own nose to a location that is not yet clear until one arrives to it. Rational thought is only employed when it comes to, say, anatomical considerations, or colour-harmonizing. The meaning of it is not given beforehand; it is conceived afterwards.

Circumstances

Odd Phenomenon's illustrations, prior to and after it during its calibration, was created out of the circumstances it was surrounded around with. An accumulation of pre-enrolling stress, post-examinations, immigration, as well as stress-induced psychosis amounted to the conception of agony that was not realised until years later. Denial of pre-existing conditions and circumstances that amplified those symptoms has aggravated the process of automatism—in addition to the tendency to hyperfixate on creating, and a special interest in semiotic and clinical psychology, this took form in the peak of productivity during 2018 and 2019, where the problems were most rampant. These circumstances has fine-tuned and hardened what Odd Phenomenon is today. Despite obstructions finally dying at the early 2020s, where focus shifted towards other stories and concepts, Odd Phenomenon remains a prided creation and narrative. A little gem, at least, found through the process of survival that was not in vain.

Loey and the Odd Phenomenon

Loey and the Odd Phenomenon is a prospective narrative, where the characters are taken out of its purely-definitions state and into a chronological story. Its concepts scatter throughout the beginnings of 2020, where the characters are sporadically given consistent concepts. It did not diverge from Odd Phenomenon until late July 2020, where drafts of the story began to be created. It is a work in progress, and will likely continue to be until 2021.
