About
Originally from Inkopolis Square, Sydney is an Octoling who moved to the Splatlands to help the Splatsville MakoMart with the influx of customers. His day-to-day routine as a MakoMart employee is one of constant stimulation and stress, and despite that, he always meets customers with a smile (even if it doesn't meet the eyes). He's committed to putting on a professional front, but sometimes a few remarks slide through the cracks.
Outside of work, Sydney enjoys nurturing his passions. His biggest interests are music and shoes- ask him about either of those interests and he will be more than happy to infodump them to you! He has a small collection of albums and merchandise from his musical favorite artists, and enjoys doing what he can to support them. His music taste is pretty broad, and enjoys taking recommendations!
All things considered, Sydney's a pretty ordinary guy, but he seems to have quite the unlucky streak...

Personality
Sydney's move to Splatsville left him without many friends- and most people there knew him solely as "the guy who works at MakoMart." While he excels at superficial conversations and pleasantries, Sydney struggles to form genuine friendships and yearns to be close to others. He enjoys putting effort into how he's dressed and his appearance, but this has inadverdently led to him receiving unwanted attention (or worse, short-winded friendships). However, he isn't afraid to put his foot down and weave passive-aggressive remarks into his speech if he feels it's necessary.
When Sydney feels comfortable enough to be genuine with someone, he's a lot more likely to be transparent about anything he's currently stressed about. His smiles are a lot more lively too- and he brings a sprinkle of enthusiasm to any conversation he's a part of. To those who get a chance to know him- he is a great listener and gives great gifts catered to their tastes. He's quick to make his appreciation for these kinds of people known, as they're very special to him!

Sydney loves all types of music! His favorite idol is Gels, and his favorite band is H2Whoa.

Sydney started working at MakoMart specifically to fund his music collection.

History
Sydney originally lived in Inkopolis Square. Growing up, Sydney was exposed to a lot of different music; his parents had a few albums of the artists they liked. Whenever Sydney got his monthly allowance, he usually spends it on albums and other music-related items.
Splatoon 2 (2017 - 2022)
In 2017, an idol named Gels made her debut- and Sydney fell in love with her music. Since then, he's followed her interviews, shows, and other appearances closely. The tips of his tentacles are pink to reflect his support of Gels and her music- and he also has a few keychains + merch attached to his phone.
Eventually, Sydney decided to apply to the newly opened MakoMart at Inkopolis Square so that he could readily support the music artists he like, and help his parents with rent. The Inkopolis Square location was pretty laid-back, and he befriended some of his co-workers.
Splatoon 3 (2022 - Present)
With the rising popularity of ink battles in the Splatlands, Sydney was asked to transfer to the new MakoMart located there. He agreed to do so, and found an apartment in Splatsville to stay at. However, Sydney did not realize how much more chaotic the customers would be. Work at the Splatsville MakoMart was much more stressful, leaving Sydney exhausted.
The process of moving uprooted a lot of his friendships, and a busy work schedule made it difficult for Sydney to keep up with his friends from Inkopolis Square. During this time, he made an online friend on Twitter who also likes Gels' music, who he confides to about his daily life. Sydney never had a chance to meet Lee in-person until April 2023, where he was asked to fill in a few shifts back at the Inkopolis Square MakoMart.
By September 2023, Sydney is completely fed up with his job, and started to search for work elsewhere. He finally quits MakoMart at the end of November, and now works at a shoe store located in Barnacle and Dime. A few days after he started working there- the mall was attacked by the Salmonid, but fortunately, Sydney (and the store) was left intact.
When he's not working, he can be found frequenting cafes with Lee and Oreo, or at concerts for Gels and H2Whoa.
Trivia
- Sydney's favorite drinks are fruit smoothies from MakoMart- they remind him of his co-workers from Inkopolis Square.
- On his Twitter account dedicated to his favorite musicians, Sydney goes by a shortened version of his name (Syd).
- He avoids playing gacha games because he knows he has an unlucky streak.
- His unlucky streak also extends to Among Us; he usually dies within the first two rounds.
- While he was working at the Splatsville MakoMart, Sydney would often fall asleep mid text-conversation.
- Sydney's texting style is mostly in lowercase- he uses some emojis, but not a lot.
- He loves doing karaoke! He's completely memorized the lyrics of Gels' discography, but can also adapt to new songs pretty easily.
- Playing Squid Beatz brings out Sydney's competitive side; Sydney is typically very easy-going, but he gets super in the zone when he's trying to full combo a song he likes.
- Whenever he eats at restaraunts, Sydney sometimes leaves very generous tips for the waiters (he likes doing it) (he understands their struggles)
- Sydney only plays Turf War during Splatfests.
Relationships
Lee
They originally started off as mutuals, and only became friends when Sydney sent Lee a DM after seeing her tweets about work. The two of them bonded over their shared work struggles (unkowingly complaining about the same person). Sydney admires how hardworking Lee is, but she doesn't seem to realize that Sydney has a crush on her...
Oreo
Sydney befriended Oreo shortly after meeting Lee in-person for the first time. While they don't talk as frequently, Sydney is impressed by Oreo's knowledge of machines and technical skill.
Minatoast
Minatoast is Sydney's least favorite customer- he caused a lot of trouble for Sydney and left a mess for him to clean up. After a chance meeting at the Barnacle and Dime Big Run, Minatoast apologized to Sydney for the trouble he caused. Sydney still doesn't hold Minatoast in high regard, but is at least glad that Minatoast doesn't bother him anymore.
