"Straight Arrows Lead to Strong Leadership!"

- Chloe, in her first campaign for Mayor, emphasising her hunting background.

Chloe Sycamore (née Jäger; 9 AGE - ) is an elf who now serves as Mayor of Grünheim.

Appearance

Like most elves (including her best friend Cheryl), Chloe has blonde hair. Unlike Cheryl, however, her hair is completely straight, and only goes down to her neck. She's also distinguishable from Cheryl by her brown eyes, taller stature, and the fox tattooed onto her left cheek.

In her youth, Chloe dressed in accordance with her role as a hunter: she had brown leather armour, with a quiver on her back for her arrows. However, after she retired from this role, she began to wear simple dresses in a single colour (her favourite being dark green).

Personality

Chloe is calm and focused - and her presence can often impart a pacifying influence on those around her. This has particularly benefitted Cheryl, who has always been a hot-head - and often had to be talked out of her impulses by Chloe. In addition, she's quite resourceful: her careers as hunter and mayor, and her adventures away from home, have taught her how to do the best with what she has in front of her.

Chloe can easily get along with most people - but one group she's always been suspicious of is wizards. Unlike most elves, she never showed any aptitude for magic: she can do some elementary healing spells, and a basic illusion spell that her husband taught her, but nothing more than that.

Relationships

Cheryl - Chloe's best friend since childhood. They frequently had different, yet adjacent interests: for example, while Cheryl plays the flute, Chloe's instrument of choice is the fiddle. As a result, they frequently had lots to discuss with one another - but they avoided competing directly against each other. Their inseparable friendship endured into adulthood - and, now that they both serve in leadership roles (Cheryl as Queen, and Chloe as Mayor), they work closely together when the situation demands it.

Marlow - Chloe's husband, whom she met as a childhood through her music group, where he played the organ. Even before they became a couple, they spent a great deal of time together: for instance, he would always accompany her and Cheryl on their adventures. Now, Marlow stays loyally by Chloe's side, assisting her with her mayoral duties, and with raising their five children.

Duane - Chloe's brother, whom she has always found very immature and annoying. Things particularly came to a head in their teenage years - when Duane flirted incessantly with her best friend Cheryl. In the end, both girls decided they couldn't tolerate Duane any more - and neither of them has spoken to him for years.

Story

Early years

Chloe Jäger was born in the year 9 AGE, in the forest town of Grünheim, in westen Waldia. Her father Arnfried was a retired guard, while her mother Hannah worked as a hunter. Sadly, Arnfried had sustained a debilitating leg wound at the age of 25, leaving him unable to serve any further. Most of his pension went towards his medical costs - leaving little for his wife, for Chloe, or her younger brother Duane.

From a young age, Duane and Chloe struggled to get along - as they fought incessantly over the few toys their parents could afford. In the end, Arnfried decided he had to keep them separate: he would keep a watchful eye over Duane, while Chloe accompanied Hannah into the forest on her hunting trips. At first, Chloe only picked mushrooms and berries; however, on her 8th birthday, she received a small toy bow. Despite her young age, she quickly proved adept with it - and, when she turned 10, she received a larger, higher-quality bow.

Unfortunately, Chloe's parents were unable to fund an education for her - and thus, she left school at the age of 13, once it ceased to be free. However, by this point, she had become quite an accomplished hunter - so, she simply took this up as a full-time career. She was able to acquire more food than her family needed - and thus, she could sell the excess to make some precious money. It wasn't enough to go back to school - but it did allow her to purchase some academic literature, and continue her studies within the comfort of her own home.

Adventures and Tragedy

When Chloe was 18 years old, her best friend Cheryl proposed exploring the world, in search of a surviving copy of 'Hymn of the Whistling Wind'. Accompanied by Chloe's brother Duane, and another curious elf named Marlow, the two of them set off on an epic voyage of discovery. Cheryl was eventually able to find her song; however, Chloe was more entranced by the fabled 'Dragonbirds' that she encountered along the way. Although flightless, these magnificent creatures could run at great speeds with up to two people on their backs, and even possessed the capacity to speak a few words. She was sorry to leave them behind - but she knew this would not be her last encounter with them.

On the way home, Chloe received that tragic news that a plague of woodpox had spred across Waldia while she and her friends were away. Their home town of Grünheim was hit particularly hard-hit, losing 40% of its population, including both of Chloe's parents. The entire group was heartbroken - and, while Cheryl left to begin a new life in Waldstein Castle, Chloe instead stayed behind in Grünheim to help the remaining residents, and resume her hunting career.

Sadly for Cheryl, her move to Waldstein didn't work out. Three years later, she reunited with Chloe and Marlow, in order to propose going on another adventure - this time, to learn more about the Dragonbirds. This time, Duane stayed behind; however, Chloe and Marlow enthusiastically joined Cheryl, and before long, they were joined by a shape-shifter by the name of James. With his help, Chloe was able to gain the trust of a dark green Dragonbird, by the name of Sternschnuppe. She rode around on his back for the remainder of his adventure - and once she returned home, he agreed to take up residence with her in Grünheim.

Return home and Motherhood

After her final adventure, Chloe travelled to Waldstein Castle, to introduce Sternschnuppe to Archdule Otto. He was most impressed - and he invited her to work at the castle, to keep her very own flock of Dragonbirds. Of course, she couldn't hunt any more, since Archduke Otto was a vegetarian - but, her conversations with him, combined with her experiences with the Dragonbirds, eventually persuaded her to adopt this diet herself. Thus, Chloe established a close friendship with Otto - who attempted to set her up with his son, Prince Rommel. The relationship started well - but sadly, it fizzled out within less than a month, and Chloe decided it was time to return home.

Upon returning home to Grünheim, Chloe was reunited her with her former travel companion, Marlow - who had recently endured a difficult break-up of his own. Their shared comfort was exactly what they both needed - and, from the ashes of their previous failed relationships, rose a new-found love for one another. They found they went together as harmoniously as the flowers and the bees - and, within a year, they were married. Two years later, the young couple welcomed a daughter named Lily - thus earning a reward of 500 Bärmarks, which Mayor Ludwig gave for every child born, in an effort to boost Grünheim's sluggish population growth. They would claim this reward twice more - as, only a day before Lily's second birthday, Chloe gave birth to twin girls, named Violet and Rose.

Chloe spent most of the next decade at home, raising her three daughters - but, as they grew up and required less of her time, she was ready to embark on a new career. Mayor Ludwig was advancing in age - and, he sought a more youthful successor. Several soldiers and tradesmen made promising pitches for the role - but it was Chloe's energetic yet relatable campaign that won him over. In the year 44BGE, at the age of 35, Chloe became both Grünheim's youngest-ever mayor, and the first woman in the role. Naturally, there was plenty of controversy surrounding her appointment - and a great deal of pressure to deliver.

Mayoral career

Despite her predecessor's rewards, Grünheim's population still hadn't recovered to its pre-plague peak of 3,000. Thus, Mayor Chloe's first actions were aimed at making life easier for new parents: she opened a new nursery and kindergarten, and allowed mothers to take a full year in maternity leave. However, she also felt it was important to set the example that she wanted her people to follow. Thus, a year and a half after becoming mayor, she gave birth to a fourth daughter, named Aurora - and a year after that, she finally had a son, named Robin. By the time winter rolled around, Grünheim at long last had a larger population than it did before the plague.

Serving as mayor whilst raising five children proved to be immensely demanding for Chloe - but, thanks to the loyalty and dedication of her husband Marlow, she was able to do it. With the population finally recovered, Chloe turned her attention to attracting more tourists to Grünheim. To this end, she opened three new flower gardens; a music hall with performances every weekend; and even a track where people could race Dragonbirds. Of course, she never forced any of them to take part - and, once they wished to stop racing, she allowed them to retire to a sanctuary behind her home.

Despite the fact that she has been mayor for over a decade, Chloe is only 47 years old, and she believes she still has much to do. Perhaps she will continue to serve as mayor, leading the town of Grünheim to ever greater heights - or maybe she will seek out a more prestigious role within King Conor's administration. Either way, the initial chorus of critical voices has fallen silent - and few would question her suitability for whatever role she pursues.

Trivia

Cheryl speaks three languages: New Boreal, Modern Archonian, Modern Lumic, and Waldian. She also has some knowledge of Engelic.
