"WE'LL ONLY BE FREE WHEN WE RELY ON OURSELVES TO PROTECT US."

Peregrine Montague, a nonmage utterly focused on the destruction of monsters. His great goal is to prove to all that Ivras needs no magic. He defies the idea that mages are necessary in the workings of the kingdom and despises the mystic arts, considering its many benefits to be mere temptations along a path of darkness. Brother to a mage, he knows the darker side of magic and Corruption, and harbors hatered in his heart for all who weild it, though he tolerates those who use it to destroy monsters and Corrupted mages.

Personality

Harsh, brutally to the point, blunt but well spoken. Carries himself with a noble air. Fanatical in his beliefs and dedication, quick to anger, responds poorly to attacks on his character or abilities as a monster hunter.

Desperately has something to prove, and it's quite obvious.

Brave, even a little brash, but not totally stupid. Usually. Can sometimes get into a certain berserker state of mind where he loses all self preservation in pursuit of his goals.

Stubborn and impossible.

History

Born to the powerful Montague family from his mother Captain Mockingbird's affair with a handsome bovine, brother to Lanius "Shrike" Montague. Mockingbird did not want sons, yet sons she had.   Delusionally convinced his cunning and manipulative mother loved him until Shrike developed a dreadful blood magic, he grew up dissusioned and betrayed as a teenager, vicious and bitter toward his brotherbut also afraid. Shrike was now the favorite child due to his powerful and dangerous magic, and Peregrine despised this to the depths of his soul.

Peregrine had one friend who brought out a gentler side of him, a vanilla scented girl, they were always together whenever his mother would allow it. Platonically bonded, two kindred spirits.

Had.

Almost as soon as he met her, he woke up find her...

Exsanguinated.

Peregrine took what money he had and left, purchasing armor and weapons, and vowed to destroy vile magic with his own effort, devoid of mystical abilities or assistance. Occasionally allied with the Witchfinders, but focused more on monsters than potential monsters. He keeps tight lips about his family's magical side, and focuses more on destroying monsters of all kinds, often fighting alongside combat mages.

He's been improving his swordcraft ever since, He fights monsters, but perhaps in his mind each beast is Shrike. Each beast is his insecurity. Each thrust is his rage. (2194)

UPDATES

Nightcursed Crone: battles it with a witchfinder. The damage he inflicts seems somehow not to matter and he is dragged screaming from the battle to receive medical attention.

in the meantime, seeks odd jobs and books and information on monsters and how a nonmage could defeat one. Buys an old book of faerie tales from Ivyfoyle in Leona.

Pyre of the North: makes offerings of heroics to his patron, Destiny, despite their aloofness. Earns their attention. Frustrated with the uselessness of a well put together plan against the monster, he manifests magic nullification powers without realizing and actually manages to inflict some damage. Does not know he is a mage now.

Peregrine's magic is simple. Fittingly for his unresolved trauma and hatred of all magic, his power (which he is unaware of) reduces the strength of nearby magic, snuffing out cantrips and minor spells and slightly muffling great sorcereies. Magical items and potions have reduced effects near him, and mages find the intensity of their magic reduced, though not their control.

For now, the radius of this ability is about 5 feet, and except for weak magical effects, it only shrinks supernatural phenomena rather than actually nullifying them. He subconcsiously directs his power at things he hates now rather than completely indiscriminately, so magic he wants to affect him still has a little effect, and mages he's cooperating with won't be as inconvenienced by his power.

How much or how little Peregrine's magic affect's another player's character's magic is fairly flexible according the needs and desires of the players, but for a general rule of thumb, mages could find their power reduced by as much as Peregrine's power score (often less reduction, rarely more). Willpower can resist this to some degree, as can the use of magically reonant materials and the fluctuations of chaotic magic occasionally bursting through, as some ideas.

With greater power, Peregrine's aura of nullification will increase, and the weakening of the magics will strenghthen. Monsters will find his aura less of a nuisance and more injurious the stronger it gets, since they are made of pure magic themselves.

With more discipline, Peregrine will be able to turn the aura on and off, then eventually decide which magical effects to nullify and which to leave alone. Eventually, he'll be able to affect the amount of control a mage has over their power, reducing the complexity of actions they can take with it.

Costs (0)

  • Magic is weakened under specific circumstances (1). Peregrine's aura of magic nullification is weakened by proximity to magically conductive materials and locations, such as star pine groves and shrines. (Flavor only)

PURCHASE HISTORY

  • Handmade Idol. Noveber 2023. Monster hunter may have no magic, but he's skilled with a blade.
  • Rite of Grace. 1/28/2024. In a fit of frustration Peregrine's soul breaks and he becomes a mage, essentially. Associated literature here.
  • Great Hunt: Volund: +2 Power:. February 2024: Peregrine's hate for magic and anthusiasm at actually harming the monster cause his nullification to empower, but he still has no control or awareness of it. It can no longer be easily dismissed as a fluke when magic works poorly on him.
  • January Prompt: +1 Discipline:. 2/7/24. Peregrine disaproves fiercely of unnescessary potion use, but understands they have uses. He can now direct his power at hates magics rather than totally indiscrimately, though it still affects magic he doesn't disaprove of to a degree..
  • February Story Prompt:. 3/6/24. +1 Discipline. Peregrine has slightly better control over how much things are affected by his magic, though it's still subconcsious and emotion driven.
  • Celestial Echoes: Witchfinder Waltz: 3/6/24. -1 Cost. Down to 0! Keeping his little cost because I like it for flavor.
