I'm not super concrete on the timeline rn but Hyun spends a couple years of her childhood raised/living with Night Yips, after being abandoned/rejected by creatures because of her CHOKK traits.
Rn, this timespan is like. around ages 3-6 or 4-7. and even during her Yip era she's still intermittently visiting creature settlements (to steal or get information or resources lol) so she like. understands/learns speech and still interacts with creatures, to a degree.
She lives with a pack of yips in the north (over the wall), I haven't drawn all the members yet. but Shadow is the leader/matriarch of the pack. and the two Yips in this img are also part of it, the older Yip possibly Shadow's mate OR one of her female pups that's grown up and still travels with her (males don't typically stay in packs long). The younger Yip prob Shadow's pup. I haven't come up with names for them, which would be names Hyun gives them bc they're like essentially very smart dogs.
and Hyun is around 6 or 7, the creature settlement she's living near or whatever decides they don't want Yips near them anymore and lure out/kill Hyun's Yip family (tho maybe one of them manages to escape? idk? either way Hyun thinks they're all dead). Terrified and anguished, Hyun leaves that area and eventually crosses the wall into the south, where she remains.
- Hyun saves Shadow from a trap on her leg (see shadow's scar on her left hindlimb), which puts Hyun in a favorable light for Shadow and subsequently Shadow's pack. Hyun is kinda just living in Shadow's area of the wilds at this point bc um the abandonment lol. Shadow tolerates her presence after she saves her, then after noticing Hyun get sick or is starving or injured or whatever, kind of just is like 'ah this pup does not have a mommy. I will do so'. also maybe bc Shadow's kid is also like 'omg other puppy I can play with :-)'.
- to be clear the Yips clearly understand/know that Hyun is a creature, they're both smart enough from learned experience to know this and because they can tell her keyaa signature is different (along with smell lol). Though,arguably, Hyun's keyaa signature would be fucked up bc she's CHOKK, so they may not fully see her as A Creature, but they know she is not A Beast. if that makes sense. This also perhaps makes them less cautious with her than they would a normal creature.
