Tales of a maiden in the woods are widespread in and around the Gloomy Forest. But just how much of those tales are based in reality?
Heather is a lonely lady who wanders the woods of the Gloomy Forest. Unassuming in appearance, Heather glides past others without them giving her a second glance. The loneliness kills her, but it's safe. In the loneliness no one can hurt her, and she can't hurt anyone else.
She's a skittish Kami, one who flees at the slightest noise like a doe. She fears her ghoulish appearance will frighten others, especially children, or worse cause them to attack her. But she does not do well on her own. She's a sorrowful Kami, often crying from the slightest misfortune. Timid as well as skittish, even those lucky enough to catch her before she runs won't be able to draw her into a conversation. But she is a kind lady, who loves being around other Kamishibas, in particular children as she has a very strong maternal drive. She is merely a kind soul, cursed with foul luck.

Present
Alone once more with her children gone, Heather wanders the woods of the Gloomy Forest. She tries to remain unknown and unseen as not to draw unnecessary attention to herself.
But she misses her children dearly and will often look after lost children until their parents find them, disappearing back into the woods like a shadow.
History
Heather's life has been filled with tragedy. She was born with haunted eyes - pupiless eyes that glowed, surrounded with a darkly coloured sclera. Her parents - while they loved her - were wary of her, whispering about her and the possibility of a curse when they thought she was asleep at night. The children of her village were cruel, calling her names, pulling her hair, and throwing rocks at her when she passed. The only ones who were neither afraid nor cruel to her were her cousins; Kanaya and Fenriel. They were younger than her and a pair of troublemakers but they were kind and tried to include her in their games, games that she was too afraid to join. Their visits were rare as they had a long way to travel, but they gave her a brief window of normalcy.
Then one day, when she was a young teenager, another teen in the village came up to her. They smiled and said the others were going to the woods and asked if she wished to join them. Shocked and overwhelmed at the sudden olive branch that was extended to her, Heather agreed without thinking it over fully. They took her into the woods.
And they left her there.
For days she wandered the woods. Calling out. Crying. Hoping someone would hear her. That someone would help her. But no one came.
She noticed there was something following her. It kept its distance but was always there. A shadow. Formless but large. At first she was afraid of it, for the woods held many monsters. But the shadow never hurt her, it didn't seem to have any ill intent towards her. It was just… Curious. As the days went on and she got lonelier and weaker, she began to talk to the shadow. It never said anything back but still she poured her heart out and told it all about her childhood, about the cruel children, about the one who left her in the woods to wander til she died.
Soon she was too weak to move. She made one final fire and lay down, waiting for death to come. That shadow slowly drew closer. She thought it was a scavenger, like a vulture, and now that she was dying it was moving in. The shadow didn't eat her. It didn't bite her. It simply stared down at her with pale, moonlike eyes.
Then it spoke.
It made her an offer; it could save her, it wanted to protect her, but she would have to let it in, to share her body with the shadow.
She agreed, the world went dark. And Oleander opened their eyes.

Heather has always loved flowers. Their soft shapes and colours. She enjoys arranging them into beautiful displays and is rather good at it.
Identifying Plants
With her new life in the woods, Heather has had to get very good at identifying plants very quickly. Luckily she's always had Oleander helping her.
Embroidery
Heather loved embroidery as a child. It was such a pretty craft and it was something she could do with her mother. She still embroiders today, just on her own now.
Calligraphy
In her childhood village, the elders would teach the children calligraphy. She wasn't the best at it but she enjoyed it. It's not really a skill she exercises any more.

When she heard their village had been destroyed, she feared the worst, but Kanaya assured her that he is alive, just out there somewhere.
